Chance to climb on board for train role

A SEASONAL vacancy has come up to drive the train at Margam Park.

The park has a number of staff who can guide it up and down the park's narrow gauge railway but only on a relief basis.

Now managers are looking to recruit a regular driver in time for the new visitor season, which starts on Monday, April 11.

Park manager Mike Wynne said: "It would really appeal to someone who likes working out of doors and someone who likes people.

"It's quite a nice little job, and quite relaxing too.

"As well as actually driving the train it involves going around the carriages, checking people are safely inside, and checking tickets."

Even though Margam Park only has a narrow gauge railway, it is still covered by some of the same regulations as mainline railways.

"There are some fairly rigorous health and safety procedures that we have to have in place to operate the train," said Mr Wynne.

"But the training for the driver is not particularly onerous and we do have people who are qualified to provide the training."

The train has become one of the park's most popular attractions since it was introduced in 2002, with a line extension opening in 2005.

The train has been out of action during the winter lay-off. "We have done some refurbishment work to get it gleaming," said Mr Wynne.
