Week ahead: Colder week ahead - Rain & showers too, Oct 14 - 14:17

The weather is set to turn significantly colder through next week as low pressure passes north of the British Isles. This is likely to be bringing some rain with it through Tuesday, before turning to showers on Wednesday with the risk of some overnight frosts. For the weather for the next few days click here Monday 17/10/11 A breezy day on Monday with low pressure north of Scotland. A front is going to be moving eastwards bringing cloud and rain through Scotland and Ireland with colder air following behind this feature. Breezier through England and Wales with broken cloud and some bright spells, the best of these over southeastern parts of England. Sunnier spells and showers for Scotland and northern parts of Ireland. Highs at 7 to 9C in Scotland and Ireland, 17C in southeast England. Tuesday 18/10/11 A cold and breezy day across the country on Tuesday with low pressure north of Scotland. There will be frequent showers over northern and western coasts and hills, but more eastern and central areas should be staying drier with good spells of sunshine, although even here a few showers are likely. Windy too with highs at 9C in northern Scotland, 12C in southeast England.

Wednesday 19/10/11 Another cold one on Wednesday with sunny spells and showers. The showers will again be most frequent on windward facing coasts and hills, so northern and western Scotland, western England, west Wales and western Ireland are most prone with drier weather to the east. The showers could turn wintry over the tops of the Scottish mountains. Highs at 7C in northern Scotland, 11C in southern England. Thursday 20/10/11 A ridge of high pressure builds from the west through Thursday. This brings a cold morning with a slight frost inland. There will be good spells of sunshine for most western and southern parts of the country, but showers are likely to the east. Highs will be to 7 to 12C. Friday 21/10/11 Confidence in the forecast is lower from Friday as a front edges eastwards. This is going to be producing some outbreaks of rain at times, probably most through central and eastern England with the west being drier and brighter. Highs will be to around 15C in the southeast, nearer 9C in western Scotland. Saturday 22/10/11 Probably a day of sunny spells and showers over many northern and western areas through Saturday. To the east and south it is likely to be rather cloudy, perhaps with a few spots of rain. Highs will be to around 8 to 14C.
