Six things you didn't know about Estonian football

Colin O'Hanlon

  • Irish League sides have enjoyed their recent visits to Estonia. Bohemians, Drogheda and most recently Shamrock Rovers have all left the Baltic state without losing or indeed conceding to the home sides.
  • Ireland and Estonia first played against each other in Paris after both teams were knocked out of the 1924 Summer Olympics. The match ended in a 3-1 defeat to the Estonians.
  • Martin Reim who is the current manager of the Estonian League champions FC Flora, is the most capped footballer to have never played in a World Cup. With 157 appearences for Estonia, he is also the second most capped European player.
  • This is Estonia's first participation in a play-off, having failed to qualify for either a Wolrd Cup or a European Championship on 12 previous attempts.
  • This qualification campaign was the first time Estonia had a positive goal difference, whilst they also picked up their biggest ever haul of points (16).
  • Only one player in the current squad plays in the Estonian league. The rest of the squad come from mainly Russia and Denmark however leagues such as the MLS, English Championship, Chinese League One, Azerbaijan Premier League and Cypriot first division can also count on representation.
