Yossi Benayoun did not play a part in Arsenal's thrilling FA Cup victory over Aston Villa on Sunday. But the midfielder was still a winner to the 16 Israeli soldiers injured or disabled in acts of terror - and their carers - who were guests of Arsenal for the match.
The Israelis - in the UK under the auspices of the One Family charity - met Benayoun before the game. He told them he would see them again after the final whistle, when the Israelis had to make a quick exit by coach to Heathrow for their return flight.
To keep his promise, the player drove to the airport, where he spent 30 minutes with the group.
Group member Netanel Chakshuri said: "The week in London has been amazing. But seeing Arsenal and Yossi coming to meet us at the airport was incredible." Arsenal head of community Alan Sefton said: "When Yossi knew that there were Israeli victims of terror coming to Sunday's game, he took it upon himself to join them." Driving to Heathrow to say goodbye was "an unbelievable gesture of goodwill. The group will remember the day fondly."
