Lefty scatters three hits in 5.2 innings for Clippers, Carolina surges late to top Wilmington, Captains can't hold lead over West Michigan, Joliet rallies in eighth to beat Lake Erie.
AAA Columbus Clippers
Clippers 3, Bisons 0: Columbus left-hander T.J. McFarland threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball in his Class AAA debut, and the Clippers won the International League game Thursday in Buffalo, N.Y.
McFarland gave up three hits and four walks while fanning three. McFarland, who turns 23 next week, was 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA in 10 starts for Class AA Akron this season. In 60.1 innings with the Aeros, McFarland allowed 61 hits, walked 12, struck out 41 and gave up one home run.
Clippers right-hander Frank Herrmann (2-1, 3.76) pitched 2.1 innings and right-hander Chris Ray one inning to complete the shutout.
1B Beau Mills (.208) led off the seventh inning with his seventh homer of the season and LF Matt LaPorta (.307) had one hit and an RBI.
Advanced A Carolina Mudcats
Mudcats 7, Blue Rocks 2: Carolina scored five times in the bottom of the eighth, and beat Wilmington in a Carolina League game.
Mudcats C Jake Lowery (.248) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Lefty Mike Rayl (3.75) started for Carolina and hurled seven innings, striking out eight. He allowed one run on four hits and one walk.
A Lake County Captains
Whitecaps 7, Captains 6: West Michigan rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to win the Midwest League game in Eastlake.
Captains 1B Jerrud Sabourin (.299) had three hits and two RBI, and RF Jordan Smith (.275) had three hits and scored three runs.
Right-hander Cody Anderson (2.52) started for Lake County and threw five innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.
Righty Jeff Johnson (3-2, 5.91) blew the save and took the loss.
Independent Lake Erie Crushers
Slammers 4, Crushers 3, 11 innings: The Crushers blew a 3-0 eighth-inning lead and lost the Frontier League game in Avon to Joliet.
Lake Erie starting pitcher Sam Strickland (2.25) pitched seven scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, four walks and struck out four.
