George Mason Patriots

Record, conference: 26-6, Colonial Athletic Association.

Location: Fairfax, Va.

Undergrad enrollment: 19,702.

Founded: 1972.

Notable alumni: Hala Gorani (CNN news anchor); Deborah Hersman (National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman); Karl Rove (deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush); Robert A. Levy (Cato Institute chairman); Stephen Moore (journalist, economic policy analyst); Steve Ricchetti (deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton). Notable basketball moment: Reached the 2006 Final Four, upsetting Michigan State, defending national champion North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut before losing to eventual champion Florida.

Indiana State Sycamores

Notable basketball moment: Had never been to the NCAA Tournament before 1979, when Larry Bird led the Sycamores to the national championship game, losing to Michigan State. The game remains the highest-rated college basketball telecast ever.

Marquette Golden Eagles

Notable basketball moment: After losing six regular-season games in the 1976-77 season, won the national championship in legendary coach Al McGuire's final game, defeating North Carolina, 67-59, in the title game while using a then-legal stall offense to preserve a late lead.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Location: Columbus, Ohio.

Notable basketball moment: Defeated Georgia Southern, 76-69, in overtime to win the Trans-America Athletic Conference Tournament and earn its first NCAA Tournament bid, after being picked to finish 10th in the TAAC.

Villanova Wildcats
