Recipe: Chicken thighs with apricots and figs

I first cooked this during one of my courses. I was with a lovely group in a farmhouse in Tuscany and we improvised for a session. We used chicken pieces on the bone, which worked beautifully. Chicken thighs are tasty and juicy and a great alternative to chicken breast, which can be dry. For chicken on the bone, follow the same recipe as below, but add 15-20 minutes to the cooking time.

Time: 45 minutes.
Serves 4-6 as a main course.

Ingredients

? 4-5 tbsp of extra-virgin olive oil
? 1 finely sliced onion
? 2 garlic cloves, crushed
? tsp grated fresh or ground ginger
? tsp turmeric
? 6-8 boneless and skinless chicken thighs
? 8 dried figs
? 8 dried apricots
? 100 ml Marsala wine/sweet dessert wine
? 200 ml hot water
? 2 tbsp flaked almonds (optional)
? 1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

Method

? Remove any excess fat from the chicken thighs, rinse and pat dry.
? Warm the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Add the onion and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric, half the apricots and figs and season. Stir well, add the chicken thighs and leave to golden at medium-high heat for a couple of minutes on both sides.
? TIP: For best results, use a non-stick frying pan. The chicken won't stick and tear and you will need less oil for cooking.
? Once the chicken thighs have turned golden, add a little more salt and pepper and the hot water. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover with a lid and cook for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally.
? Remove the lid, add the Marsala wine and the remaining apricots and figs. Stir and cook uncovered for another 10-15 minutes on medium-low heat.
? Transfer to a warmed platter and sprinkle with almond flakes and parsley.
? Serve hot with rice or couscous.

Furious comeback falls short as Cleveland Cavaliers lose to Boston, 93-90

Kyrie Irving's 21 points led the Cavs, who also got 20 points from Anderson Varejao and six points and 10 assists from Ramon Sessions.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers played one really good quarter Tuesday night against Boston. But the three indifferent periods that preceded it were too much to overcome.

Trailing by 18 entering the fourth quarter, 76-58, the Cavaliers displayed the hustle and intensity that was lacking for the first 36 minutes, but fell just short in a 93-90 loss to the Celtics at The Q. The two teams each claimed road wins in the rare back-to-back two-game series that began with the Cavaliers win in Boston on Sunday night.

Kyrie Irving's driving lay-in with 1:18 remaining drew the Cavaliers within two points at 89-87, highlighting a frantic comeback bid after numerous turnovers had helped Boston build a double-digit lead through most of the game. But Kevin Garnett's jumper restored a four-point advantage and Paul Pierce's two free throws in the final seconds put the game away.

The Cavaliers outscored Boston, 32-17, in the final quarter.

Irving's 21 points led the Cavs, who also got 20 points from Anderson Varejao and six points and 10 assists from Ramon Sessions.

Pierce's 20 points led five Celtics in double figures, with Garnett and Brandon Bass each adding 13.

Netanyahu awaits victory in Likud primary

Likud members are voting in the primary elections for the party's leadership today.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to win the vote by a majority, although he faces a challenge from Moshe Feiglin, head of the ultra-right wing Likud faction, "Jewish Leadership".

Mr Feiglin has already challenged Mr Netanyahu unsuccessfully in other Likud primaries, but he won just 23.4 per cent of the vote in 2007.

Around 130,000 Israelis are eligible to vote.

Mr Netanyahu's supporters have been campaigning heavily for him, amid concerns that a low turnout could boost his rival's support.

Mr Feiglin, a hardliner, has described a future Palestinian state as "a terrorist country right in the heart of the land of the Bible".

Although he is not expected to win, a strong showing in the primary vote would be an embarrassment to mainstream Likud.

Yaron Ezrahi, a political analyst, said that if Mr Feiglin secured more than 30 per cent of the votes, it would seriously hurt Likud's image.

Where were you when........?

As almost a lifetime critic of Israel's lack of public relations skills, I have watched even more aghast than usual as Turkey's Erdogan has made the running against Israel with his portrayal of her attack on the Turkish ?humanitarian relief flotilla? to Gaza as something not short of an international crime. I will concede absolutely that, confronted with opposition. the Israeli commandos went into overdrive and did not stop to decide whether they should suffer casualties before responding to their attackers. But then this was no innocent `?humanitarian? sortie by well-intentioned Turks ? and I do not rely on Israeli propaganda sources for my information. What's wrong with the Washington Post and why has Israel not drawn on what it had to say in an editorial in June last year? You don't know what I am talking about? Well, here's the editorial and if you did not know about the information it contains, phone your local Israel Embassy and ask why (all the words that follow are from the Washington Post editorial):

Western governments have been right to be concerned about Israel?s poor judgment and botched execution in the raid against the Free Gaza flotilla. But they ought to be at least as worried about the Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which since Monday has shown a sympathy toward Islamic militants and a penchant for grotesque demagoguery toward Israel that ought to be unacceptable for a member of NATO.??

On the opposite page today, Turkey?s ambassador to the United States makes the argument that Israel had no cause to clash with the ?European lawmakers, journalists, business leaders and an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor? who were aboard the flotilla. But there was no fighting with those people, or with five of the six boats in the fleet. All of the violence occurred aboard the Turkish ferry Mavi Marmara, and all of those who were killed were members or volunteers for the Islamic ?charity? that owned the ship, the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH).??

The relationship between Mr. Erdogan?s government and the IHH ought to be one focus of any international investigation into the incident. The foundation is a member of the ?Union of Good,? a coalition that was formed to provide material support to Hamas and that was named as a terrorist entity by the United States in 2008. In discussions before the flotilla departed, Turkish officials turned down offers from both Israel and Egypt to deliver the ?humanitarian? supplies on the boats to Gaza and insisted Ankara could not control what it described as a nongovernmental organization.??

Yet the IHH has certainly done its best to promote Mr. Erdogan. ?All the peoples of the Islamic world would want a leader like Recep Tayyip Erdogan,? IHH chief Bulent Yildirim proclaimed at a Hamas rally in Gaza last year. And Mr. Erdogan seems to share that notion: In the days since an incident that the IHH admits it provoked, the Turkish prime minister has done his best to compete with Iran?s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hezbollah?s Hasan Nasrallah in attacking the Jewish state.?

??The heart of humanity has taken one of her heaviest wounds in history,? Mr. Erdogan claimed this week. He has had next to nothing to say about the slaughter of Iranians protesting last year?s fraudulent elections, but he called Israel?s actions ?state terrorism? and a ?bloody massacre? and described Israel itself as an ?adolescent, rootless state.? His foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said in Washington on Tuesday that ?this attack is like 9/11 for Turkey? -- an obscene comparison to events in which more than 2,900 genuinely innocent people were killed.??

Mr. Erdogan?s crude attempt to exploit the incident comes only a couple of weeks after he joined Brazil?s president in linking arms with Mr. Ahmadinejad, whom he is assisting in an effort to block new U.N. sanctions. What?s remarkable about his turn toward extremism is that it comes after more than a year of assiduous courting by the Obama administration, which, among other things, has overlooked his antidemocratic behavior at home, helped him combat the Kurdish PKK and catered to Turkish sensitivities about the Armenian genocide. Israel is suffering the consequences of its misjudgments and disregard of U.S. interests. Will Mr. Erdogan?s behavior be without cost?

End Washington Post comment.....and mine

Manchester United Hacking Twilight Weekend breaks Lloyds Banking Group New Castle United

A week of weakness

While our non-Jewish friends and colleagues wind down in advance of the festive period and we look forward to the joys of Chanucah, I find myself, as usual, rather disgruntled.

Never mind the season of goodwill, this has been a strange week and one in which I?ve spent a considerable amount of time shaking my head in disbelief.

When I first saw the story about Tory MP Aidan Burley?s presence at a Nazi-themed stag do late on Saturday night I was disgusted, as I expect were most of you. I felt sure that when the JC spoke to Jewish community representatives this week there would be outrage.

There was, from some people. The Board of Deputies, the Holocaust Educational Trust, and other right-thinking groups were "appalled", "alarmed" and "insulted" by Mr Burley?s mindless stupidity.

But what of the Conservative Friends of Israel? CFI is one of the largest parliamentary lobby groups and works with dozens of Mr Burley?s colleagues.

CFI director Stuart Polak issued a statement: "I have worked closely and travelled to Israel with Aidan Burley. I know him well and he does not have an antisemitic bone in his body. The actions of his friends were unacceptable and inexcusable. Aidan should not have been associated with this. However, Aidan is both a friend of Israel and a friend of the Jewish community."

Oh, well that?s alright then. He enjoyed a free holiday in sunny Israel. He?s a mate. I hadn?t realised.
I?ve heard the old excuse "some of my best friends are Jewish" plenty of times, but never "some of my best friends' friends like to dress as Nazis, it?s fine". That?s a new one.

Last week Labour Friends of Israel felt able to criticise Labour MP Paul Flynn following his vile comments about British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould. Why is it that Mr Polak saw the need to defend Mr Burley following similarly insane behaviour? Maybe I?m missing something.

But this episode was merely the CFI dessert to the United Synagogue?s sour main course.

While I was away last weekend a friend emailed me asking if I?d seen the US weekly newsletter. I hadn?t, but expected there to be a full and frank apology following the publication of the organisation?s report into the missing graves of stillborn babies.

How wrong I was. I looked for the newsletter and found a despicable, all-guns-blazing attack on the JC, likening the publication to the very worst of tabloid press practices.

The US was "extremely saddened" that the JC had put itself "at odds with Jewish ethics". In revealing the web of lies which stretched from at least 1933 to 1985, and then rightly criticising the paucity of the US' own efforts to investigate the tragedy, we had "struggled to rise above the morality" of the now-defunct News of the World.

That?s strange, because I, along with the vast majority of British Jews, was rather more than "extremely saddened" by the United Synagogue?s long-running practice that left dozens (perhaps hundreds?) of bereaved parents distraught and misled about the final resting places of their poor children.

Yet US president Stephen Pack pops up in this week?s edition of the paper to praise "the positive contribution that the JC has made". Our revelations were, he says, "a fine example of journalism providing a real service to our community".

Make your mind up.

I don?t always agree with my colleague Geoffrey Alderman. I thought his attack on the Chief Rabbi last Friday a little unnecessary. But this week he hits the nail on the head. There is clearly now a question hanging over the US leaders' fitness for office.

Both cases leave me disconsolate. Where has the fortitude gone? Why are so many of our supposed "leaders" so spineless when it comes to criticising those who so blatantly deserve it? Whatever happened to actions having consequences? There must be many guilty consciences knocking around the apparent top tables of British Jewry.

We know that the days of politicians' honourable resignations are long gone. It seems that the "no blame" culture which seeps into every pore of British society has now sadly also found favour within our own communal organisations.

Thankfully there was one huge, shiny, bright spot. On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure to meet 83-year-old Eugene Black. He was a jolly Yorkshireman with a gentle handshake and a twinkle in his eye. But as I soon discovered, the Holocaust survivor also had an incredibly moving story to tell.

After being liberated from Bergen-Belsen at the end of the war, Mr Black spent more than 60 years desperately searching for the truth about his two sisters' fate. Thanks to the remarkable archives of the International Tracing Service he was able to discover the full tragedy of what really happened to them.

Mr Black could, undoubtedly, teach many people a thing or two about unfailing dedication, bravery and strength. Hearing him speak in the Locarno Room at the Foreign Office brought a tear to my eye. But the comments of others this week have brought sadness to my heart.

JC MSFL rumour mill: January 28

Catch all the latest gossip from the JC MSFL in our rumour mill.

Brothers Ben and Matt Radstone have been strongly linked with a return to boyhood club SPEC FC next season.

It has been reported that Ben Moss is going to start a team called Lord Mossington after being frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities at Faithfold. (Various)

Keeper Dan Cohen claims to have been approached by up to seven Premier Division clubs.

Southgate Harmen A have been linked with a raid for Brady Maccabi B hotshot Daniel Hildebrand.

Shirley Park are lining up a double raid of Jewventus duo Mike Gill and Ami Wynbourne after fans called for new faces to replace star man Nicky Plotnek who is in Israel for another month.

Faithfold B are keen to sign Boca Jewniors hotshot Jamie Weinrich.

Another Boca player who could be on the move is keeper Ryan Monk who has attracted interest from first division Montana Boca United.

Adam Fegan, the former Raiders and Lions B, have turned down an offer to return to Montana.

Scouts from two Premier Division clubs will travel to Rowley Lane on Sunday to watch Temple Fortune's Michael Goldberg.

Norstar A are said to be lining up a six-figure offer for Woodford Wanderers hotshot Jerome Marks.

Faithfold stalwarts Daryl Phillips and Ben Lewis are reported to have turned down a big offer to play for the LA Galaxy.

Inspired by Thierry Henry returning to Arsenal and Paul Scholes to Manchester United, North London Raiders A are considering re-signing marksman Ashley Davidson.

Glenthorne United B have issued a "hands-off" warning after three Premier Division teams raised an interest in striker Fabio Revieccio. A Glenthorne spokesman told JC Sport: "He went to Redbridge and it didn't work out. He's happy back at his spiritual home."

North London Raiders B top-scorer David Dinkin has ruled out a return to Rowley Lane, saying he's never been happier. The marksman is set to trigger a goal bonus if he scores 15 in the league this season.

A JC source claims that Neasden midfielder Matt Sofier trained with Brady Maccabi A this week.

Victor Martinez of Detroit Tigers, a former Cleveland Indians star, has microfracture knee surgery; ACL surgery likely a few weeks away

Tigers revealed two weeks ago that Martinez tore his left ACL during offseason conditioning, saying he would "most likely be lost" for the 2012 season.

victor-martinez.jpgDetroit Tigers hitting star Victor Martinez will likely miss the entire 2012 season.

DETROIT, Michigan -- Victor Martinez had knee surgery and will need a second operation, another indication he is likely to miss the entire 2012 season.

The Detroit Tigers star had microfracture surgery Friday to repair the medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee. He is projected to have anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery on the same knee in six to eight weeks.

The team announced Monday that Martinez, 33, was expected to be out for the year.

When the Tigers revealed two weeks ago that Martinez tore his left ACL during offseason conditioning, they said the designated hitter would "most likely be lost" for the 2012 season.

Detroit signed Prince Fielder last week to make up for the loss of Martinez, investing $214 million over nine years in the free agent slugger.

Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBIs in 2011, helping the Tigers win the division in his first season with them. He signed a $50 million, four-year contract before last season.

Fielder matched his career-high .299 batting average last year -- his seventh with the Milwaukee Brewers -- with 38 home runs and 120 RBIs. He finished among the top five in AL MVP voting for the third time.

Detroit won the AL Central by 15 games last year, advanced past the New York Yankees in the playoffs and was eliminated by Texas in Game 6 of the AL Championship Series.

Martinez, a switch-hitter, has a .303 career batting average with 143 home runs and 741 RBI in 1,149 games.

Martinez came up to the major leagues with the Cleveland Indians late in the 2002 season and played part of the 2003 campaign with the Tribe.

In the four-year span from 2004-07, Martinez hit .302 for the Indians, and averaged 21 homers and 99 RBI.

After an injury-plagued 2008 season, the Indians traded Martinez to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, 2009 for right-handed pitchers Justin Masterson and Bryan Price and left-handed hurler Nick Hagadone.

Martinez has made the American League all-star team four times, including three times with the Indians. He played 821 games for Cleveland, mostly at catcher, batting .297 with 103 homers and 518 RBI.

Month ahead: Valid from 31/01 to 27/02 2014 - Winter on the way?, Jan 21 - 15:01

Winter, which, being full of care, makes summer's welcome thrice more wish'd, more rare. William Shakespeare, Sonnet LVI It is one of those occasions when I somehow I'd wished I'd remained under the duvet this morning as I'd have missed the deadline for compiling this forecast and although still being in trouble with 'the boss' for being late in filing it, I'd let myself 'off the hook' by not having to make a commitment on which way I believe this pattern is about to 'jump'? Winter 2011-12 was never going to be a replay of last year, although many expected and anticipated that it would be, for me I have to say that it has been somewhat of a 'disappointment' in terms of interesting 'activity' or characteristic seasonal conditions so far, that however may be about to alter. Perhaps this winter could be a 'mirror image' of last year, the coldest conditions 'bunched up' in the final 'statistical meteorological month' rather than the first in 2011-12? The dilemma at the moment is that all the guns are primed for a 'salvo' of intensely cold polar air to come southwards into continental Europe, whether this gets into the UK is the critical factor and is dependent upon a build of pressure which is expected to take place through the next week to ten days, an easterly flow would see this flooding across the British Isles and when compared to recent temperatures a dramatic alteration is fortunes, the determination of the actual wind direction through this period will be crucial to this forecasts viability. *--- 26/01/12* The short term sees conditions dominated by a west to northwesterly flow, some rain, some showers and some drier weather for all the UK. Temperatures although 'reasonable' at first looks set to be declining away, some more general outbreaks of rain and strong winds taking the edge of the benefit of this, as the period closes it looks as if a potentially major change in fortunes could occur. A wet and windy period is indicated for all areas crossing from the west, followed by a blustery and increasingly cool regime and becoming colder later. *27/01/12 - 05/02/12* It'll be around this date that high pressure should begin to take control of the overall pattern, the location of its development crucial for the importation of colder air becoming entrenched over central Europe. Low pressure should be shunted away, taking with any remaining remnants of showery activity plaguing the UK, the whole of the country becoming largely dry, settling into a lengthy spell of quiet, mid-winter anticyclonic conditions. Winds will for the most part be light to variable in nature through the life of this high pressure, a recipe for the associated problems and benefits of mid-winter anticyclonic weather. Mist, fog and frosty conditions widespread overnight, clearing slowly in most areas to bright and or sunny but cold conditions, although in prone spots this will no doubt persist making it cold and dull, hence feeling bitterly cold. With the aforementioned dilemma in mind, as the high pressure centre drifts and inevitably shifts its position, 'a watch' will have to be maintained for a strengthening or development of any easterly component to the flow, this potentially will threaten much colder air being drawn into the UK from off the continent and perhaps some wintry weather for the south. *06/02/12 - 09/02/12* Conditions look set to alter here, a change to rather more unsettled weather being 'flagged up' as the influence of high pressure declines away and low pressure edges into the UK, however it remains on the cold side, therefore this transition may potentially be quite 'messy'? A potentially wintry component to any precipitation at first will diminish later as generally less cold air moves through all areas from off the Atlantic courtesy of low pressure transiting the UK, outbreaks of rain for all areas followed by brighter showery conditions and a flow from the northwest. *10/02/15 - 15/02/12* Rather showery across most areas at first, low pressure edging away to be followed by rise in pressure from the west. Showers affecting all areas at first, some wintry over northern higher ground will die away, mainly broken cloud with brighter conditions establishing nationwide as a developing anticyclone to the west builds across the UK. The overnight problems of frost and fog return. The hint that once again, high pressure could become a large and persistent feature. Simon & Capn Bob Email me at simon.keeling@weatheronline.co.uk

Miller mistake sends Oakwood through

PETER MORRISON TROPHY LAST 16
Oakwood 1 Leeds Maccabi 1st 0

Mark Miller secured his place on a DVD of goalkeeping bloopers after his shocking mistake cost Leeds Maccabi 1st a place in the quarter-finals of the Peter Morrison Trophy.

Keeper Miller inexplicably carried Brad Wine's harmless effort over the goal line to leave both sets of players in disbelief.

There appeared little danger when Wine's through ball was heading straight for Miller, but the Maccabi keeper somehow managed to fumble the ball over the line.

And despite having 70 minutes to find an equaliser, Leeds were unable to spare Miller's blushes as they bowed out in the last 16.

"I don't think either set of players really believed what had happened," said Leeds boss Ian Selwyn.

"When Brad put the ball through, both sets of players turned around to jog back to halfway because they expected the keeper to pick the ball up.

"And then suddenly, I'm thinking, 'that's gone in. How the hell has that gone in?'

"It was a dreadful mistake and unfortunately that error was the difference."

Miller was in fine form during Leeds? impressive 2-1 win over New Ireland Wood last Sunday but was soon cast as the villain following Oakwood?s first-half opener.

The visitors huffed and puffed for long periods but Richard Black and Dave Woolman both missed opportunities to drag the visitors level.

"It was a close and competitive game between two equally matched sides and perhaps we cancelled each other out," added Selwyn.

"Oakwood had the better of the first half but we had the better of the second and I think our fitness showed in the closing stages.

"But you have to give great credit to Oakwood because they put their bodies on the line even when they were out on the feet.

"I've no complaints about the result. I'd like to wish Oakwood every success in the competition and hopefully they can go on and do well.

"We were treated fantastically well by everyone and we?re very grateful for the hospitality."

Oakwood joint-manager Ric Blank told JC Sport: "As expected, it was a full-blooded, epic cup tie played at a million miles per hour at Parmiters.

"It was a gripping game we thoroughly deserved to win. We controlled the first half and were disappointed not to put the matter to bed in the second half with the number of chances we created.

"In the second half Leeds tried to turn up the pressure but never really got going. Adam Levine was imperious at the back against Woolman and did not give him a sniff.

"Kintish was causing all sorts of problems for the Leeds back four with his running and determination - he never let them settle for a second and they couldn't handle him.

"The team spirit was outstanding on Sunday and the one time Leeds did get round the back, Josh Rubin pulled off two miraculous blocks to stop Leeds from equalising.

"We wanted it all over the park yesterday and refused to be bullied, showing great courage to keep the ball moving all over the park - especially in the first half.

"We know there are some great teams left in the competition and Redbridge, Manchester Maccabi and my old club South Manchester are overwhelming favourites, but we are just looking forward to being in the next round and hopefully another chance to test ourselves against a good side.

"In the meantime we turn our attention back to the league and a huge game at home to Southgate Harmen B. Southgate beat us last season and we are desperate for revenge this time around."

A Kopul of sporting heroes

Very soon it will be the 50th yahrzeit of Rabbi Kopul Rosen. He was an awe-inspiring man, dead at 48. Unforgettable to pupils of Carmel College (the Jewish boarding school he founded), I'm sure he's remembered by almost everyone who met him. There will be many tributes but here is a story you will get only from me.

It starts with my greatest sporting moment but, like many people's, it had nothing at all to do with any sporting prowess of my own. I was playing for the school's football XI against the teachers. I was right-half, as it was called in those days. It wasn't easy playing for Carmel, especially when Kopul was watching. He liked football but he didn't always like what he saw and would boom out withering criticism from the touchline. I remember him coming on once at half-time and saying: "Ackerman, you're playing a very fair game. Half the time you're playing for our side, half the time you're playing for their side."

The teachers' centre-forward was Mr Bloch, more scholar than striker but, to his left, there was a gap. Where was the man I was supposed to be marking? Then I saw him, spotted him a hundred yards away. He was unmistakable. My God! It was Jackie Milburn, late of Newcastle United -wearing his England shirt. Jackie Milburn, the greatest-ever Geordie number 9,239 goals for the club, a hat-trick for England - with a hero status not even Shearer or Keegan could match.

Mr Bloch tapped the ball to him. Milburn pulled it back behind the half-way line with his right foot and struck it with his left. It hit the crossbar! It would be nice to say that I tackled him once or twice. I didn't, but I had played against him and once a week through that winter he came down to coach us.

Kopul and he were both great men. The scholar and the scorer. Lehavdil, you may say, but I do not. Jackie had a special aura about him. The statue near Newcastle's ground is tribute to his goodness as well as his goals. By the time Milburn arrived at Carmel, Kopul was already very ill. Clearly he admired the footballer. In an obscure biography that I have seen, Milburn recounts a visit to Kopul's study.

The rabbi invited the footballer to come and live at the school with his family, teach PE and become a housemaster. His son would be educated free. But, says Milburn, Kopul stressed that "I had to make a quick decision because he didn't have much time left." He describes the scene; the wood-panelled room, the massive desk and Kopul sitting in near-darkness behind it, a large, bearded, extraordinarily handsome man with a remarkable, sonorous voice.

"I am not religious," writes Milburn, "I don't believe in God but, if there was a god, that is what he would sound like." If you knew Kopul, especially if you were a small boy, you'd probably have agreed. And I don't think Kopul would have minded. Jackie Milburn didn't stay at Carmel. He became manager of Ipswich Town before returning to Newcastle. Kopul died and was buried in the school grounds. His grave could be seen from his study window.

Week ahead: Britain to shiver - Temperatures to plummet, Jan 29 - 07:07

Snow showers with severe frosts developing This week sees it becoming very wintry with temperatures expected to plummet as mild air to the west loses the battled. As high pressure to the east builds in across the country, much of the United Kingdom turns settled but plenty of snow showers are likely around the coasts, particularly North Sea coasts. Inland Britain overall will be dry and sunny with widespread and locally severe frosts developing as it turns even colder as we go through the week. For the weather for the next few days click here Wednesday 31/01/12 Any residual light snow across the south west and Wales clears. Most of Britain looks dry with sunny spells though snow showers may affect eastern coasts of Scotland. A widespread frost to come tonight. Highs of 1 to 3C.

Thursday 01/02/12 A very cold day and there is a risk of heavy snow showers around North Sea coasts. The bulk of the country looks dry with good sunny spells. Frosts soon develops this evening becoming widespread and penetrating hard frost by night. Highs of 0 to 1C.

Friday 02/02/12 A bitterly cold day across the country. Snow showers around eastern coasts may penetrate a bit further inland today with wintry showers also around western coasts. Central areas generally keeping dry, sunny conditions. A hard to locally severe frost is expected through the evening and night. Expect highs of -1 to 0C.

Saturday 03/02/12 Little change expected across the country today with the country locked into freezing weather. More snow showers to come across eastern areas with a few in the west. Dry and sunny elsewhere. A hard to locally severe frost is expected again tonight and we could see heavy snow into Scotland. Expect highs of -2 to 0C.

Sunday 04/02/12 Confidence becomes low today with model suggesting an area of snow across Scotland spreads south across much of the country through the course of the day, perhaps dry across Wales and the south west. Another severe frost develops tonight. Highs of -2 to 1C. Monday 05/02/12 Again confidence is low in the forecast at this point as an area of rain may move into the south falling as snow across central and southern England. Dry and sunnier to the north. Highs of -2 to 3C.

Jubilation at last for JLGB

JC MSFL DIVISION THREE
Team JLGB 2 North West Neasden C 1

Strikers from Dan Curtis and James Lester saw Team JLGB claim their first win of the season, at the 15th time of asking, to put a massive dent in Neasden's promotion hopes.

A fantastic performance saw JLGB pick up there first points of the season. And it was fully deserved too.

JLGB welcomed back Lester, who had been on paternity leave and had to play people out of position with some players playing with knocks and others dropping out last minute. So with a matchday squad of 11 men, JLGB set to their task.

JLGB took the lead through a sumptuous free kick taking by Curtis. The captain putting ball in the bottom corner out of the keeper's reach.

JLGB were dealing with everything that Neasden were throwing at them in what was clearly a very even match.

Chances were at a premium with defences on top. Rob Silverman and Byron Watkins playing in unfamiliar centre back slots in imperious form. and ensuring Ryan Kissin in the JLGB goal did not have much to do.

JLGB extended their lead when Mike Marks played a delightful through ball to Dave Mitchell. Mitchell looked up and put in a cross which Lester gratefully knocked home.

JLGB went into half time 2-0 up and it was fully deserved.

Neasden edged the second half and JLGB were not helped when James Lester pulled his calf. Despite playing on, Lester was in effect out of the game and JLGB's attack suffered with no one up front to keep hold of the ball.

So, after reshaping the formation, JLGB had to keep Neasden out who were clearly getting frustrated and there were a few tasty challenges going in. Neasden had a goal ruled out for offside and to be fair were threatening to score. A couple of good saves from Kissin and some stout defending from the JLGB defence kept Neasden out. Rob Freedman in particular was having a stormer at left back and was preventing any crosses coming in from that side.

Neasden did break through with about 20 minutes to go courtesy of player-manager Louis Taylor, but JLGB held firm and did not concede further.

JLGB boss Rob Silverman told JC Sport: "I am a proud man today. We were not lucky. We deserved it. It was our best performance of the season and I am sure we would have scored more in the second half if we didnt have to reorganise due to James Lester's injury".

"I would nominate the entire team for team of the week as every player, to a man, played exceptionally well.

However, the top three performances for me were Rob Freedman, Matt West and Mike Marks. (I didnt play too bad either!)

'The Orthodox World is Being Overtaken by Extremism'

A very powerful statement on the recent religious clashes in Israel from Rabbi Shaul Robinson of Lincoln Square Synagogue, New York (considered one of the favourites for UK Chief Rabbi, should, of course, he be interested in the job).

For his article, entitled ?The Curse of Violent Extremism ? from the 10th of Tevet to Bet Shemesh?, can be read in full on the synagogue website.
