Review: 1936 - inside the Nazi Olympics

Tom McNab’s play about Hitler’s 1936 Berlin Olympics is full of detail, which is perhaps unsurprising for a writer who is a former Olympic official, athletics coach and sports novelist.

Yet while the author efficiently sets out arguments and fascinating facts about the Nazi Games, he does not squeeze much drama out of it. Among the historical figures that populate his play, there is no one whose fate we become emotionally attached to, not even Gretel Bergmann, the great long jumper who trains in Britain because she has been thrown out of her German athletic club for being Jewish.

McNab’s dialogue exists mainly to drive plot. This is the kind of historical drama in which historical figures speak in history-advancing sentences — some of them perhaps more amusingly than the author intended. Goebbel’s promises a brooding Hitler a games which will be “even better than the Nuremberg rallies” — a benchmark of excellence that I am guessing was rejected early on by Lord Coe for London 2012.

But if McNab is more interested in educating than creating drama, on that level he, and this solid if uninspired production directed by Jenny Lee, succeed. The prejudice experienced by the US’s black Olympians from their compatriots is a thought-provoking parallel to the racism suffered by Germany’s Jews. No wonder Jessie Owens could not be persuaded to protest against German antisemitism by boycotting the games. Barred from US scholarships and athletics clubs, Berlin was his chance to run against white athletes. Gretel, meanwhile, having equalled the German record, was dropped for the German team for not being good enough.

Predicting the top four

Ger McCarthy

Arsenal: Another summer and another long-running transfer saga involving one of Arsenal’s most prized possessions. Although Robin van Persie’s  refusal to extend his contract may not have come as a surprise, his willingness to listen to offers from both Man City and Man United is not likely to endear him to the Arsenal faithful. The Dutchman enjoyed a phenomenal 2012 thanks in large part to remaining completely injury-free for the first time in his Arsenal career. Juventus’ maintain a firm interest in the player’s services despite a £20 million asking price for the 29-year old.
That valuation has not deterred  Alex Ferguson from making a firm bid earlier in the week (although well below Arsenal’s valuation). Of his potential destinations, Manchester City appears the only club likely to meet van Persie’s reported £195,000-a-week wage demands. The way is clear then for Roberto Mancini to step up his interest in the coming weeks with Emmanuel Adebayor set to complete a permanent move to Spurs. Most Arsenal fans will be disappointed to lose their talismanic Dutch striker especially on foot the arrival of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud during the close season.
Theo Walcott stalling on long-term contract negotiations plus continual boardroom unrest has made for a forgettable summer and a quick end to the RVP saga would be welcome if only to move on and concentrate on the upcoming campaign.

Verdict:
Naturally, Arsene Wenger does not wish to strengthen United or City’s title credentials by selling them his best striker so getting RVP to see out at least another year of his contract would suit the French manager best. The reality of the situation is that van Persie’s desire to win trophies and earn top wages will most likely see the Dutch striker end up in the blue of Manchester City before the new campaign begins. Therefore, Giroud and Podolski must hit the ground running and score the bulk of Arsenal’s goals should van Persie eventually move on. A top four finish is certainly within reach but a lot will depend on the Gunners new signings.

Predicted Finish:
4th

Man United:  Manchester United’s signing of Shinji Kagawa could well turn out to be the transfer of the summer if the Japanese international replicates his previous Borussia Dortmund performances for the Old Trafford club. Kagawa netted 13 times en-route to helping his side win a Bundesliga League and Cup double last season with his energy, passing ability and consistent scoring threat exactly what United’s sometimes stagnant midfield was missing last term.
Apart from the high profile signing of Kagawa, Ferguson’s hopes of wrestling the title back from Manchester City’s grasp will once again depend on the emerging youth within the United first team squad. Tom Cleverley (returning from a long-term injury), Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck, David DeGea, Chris Smalling are all under 23 and those young legs along with the experienced Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney will spearhead United’s challenge this term. Fans of the Old Trafford club would no doubt have wished for a few more signings but a settled squad that challenged City right up to the final minutes of last season are certain to be amongst the front-runners once again.

Verdict:
Alex Ferguson’s reliance on developing youth rather than paying lavish fees for big money signings has much to do with a tightening of the purse strings at Old Trafford. The ageless Scot remains the best manager at cultivating young talent however and  United are certain to challenge for the title thanks to Ferguson’s ceaseless will to win. Chelsea and Manchester City’s bottomless pockets give those two clubs a distinct advantage when it comes to attracting the high earners and it is because of this United will have to make do with a finish outside the top two.

Predicted Finish
: 3rd

Chelsea: The close season signings of Marko Marin and Edin Hazard underline Roman Abramovich’s desire to build on Chelsea’s Champions League success and return the London club to the summit of the Premier League. Having reluctantly handed the managerial reins to Roberto DiMatteo on a permanent basis, Chelsea’s billionaire owner has not been afraid to splash the cash during the summer months in an effort to close the gap on Manchester City ahead of the new campaign. Abramovich will expect nothing less than the Premier League title in return for his summer investment along with the usual demand for beautiful attacking football similar to the tiki-taka approach of Barcelona.
The (reported) imminent arrivals of Brazilian pair Oscar and Hulk further underlines the European Champions’ desire to invest heavily in youth and this tactic coupled with the selling of Didier Drogba and Saloman Kalou will certainly make Chelsea a more fluid attacking threat for 2012-13. The prospect of a front-six including Lampard, Hazard, Mata, Torres, Hulk and Marin should make for some compelling football but how best DiMatteo deploys his attacking unit and massages the egos of a dressing room prone to revolt will dictate Chelsea’s success (or lack of it) this season.

Verdict:
The arrival of 21-year old Belgian attacking midfielder Edin Hazard will quicken Chelsea’s counter-attacking ability and should provide plenty of ammunition for  Torres. On paper, Chelsea’s first team squad is every bit as potent as Manchester City’s and all signs point to the Londoners enjoying another profitable season. Defending their Champions League title may prove the deciding factor in losing out to City.

Predicted Finish:
2nd

Manchester City: It seems like only yesterday that Sergio Ageuro’s injury-time winner secured Manchester City’s first title since 1967 in the final match of the season. Since then it has been a relatively quiet pre-season for the newly crowned champions who are currently on tour in Austria preparing for the new campaign. An improved long-term contract for manager Roberto Mancini has ensured stability off the field and with no major injury concerns to date Man City look primed to retain the title they won in such dramatic fashion back in May.
The spine of the Man City team; Hart, Kompany, Toure plus Ageuro/Tevez/ Balotelli remains intact while the potential arrival of Robin van Persie  would bolster an already world-class forward line.
City’s failure to emerge from a difficult Champions League opening phase group will see a determined effort to reach the latter stages of Europe’s premier football competition in 2013.

Verdict:
A settled squad, a manager signed up for the next five years and an ability to attract the top talent from around the world ensures Manchester City will begin as favourites to lift a second consecutive Premier League title. How best Mancini manages to rotate his first team squad with additional European games on top of an already demanding domestic schedule will dictate City’s chances of success. Right now, they remain the team to beat.

Predicted Finish: 1st

Drake's "re-barmitzvah"

Canadian rapper Drake is one of the hottest names in the music industry at the moment.

His collaborations with Rihanna have propelled him to the higher echelons of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. He has written tracks for, and performed with, global megastars including Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Alicia Keys. Drake has almost seven million Twitter followers.

Drake – whose real name is Aubrey Graham – was born in Toronto in October 1986, the son of an African-American father and Canadian-Jewish mother, who sent him to a Jewish school and ensured he had a barmitzvah.

After his parents divorced, he began acting at the same time as taking the first steps in his music career. By 2009 he had seen a song reach number two on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

The 25-year-old’s career has since rocketed, but, it seems, he is still a good Jewish boy at heart…

Drake toured Britain last month and during his sell-out O2 gig in London he apparently waved an Israeli flag while shouting: "Shout out to all my Jewish people in the house!" (Incidentally, when the tour moved to Manchester he made a new friend – Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, who he shared a curry dinner and various parties with.)

Now Drake has gone a step further to identify with his Jewish upbringing. Last October he had a “re-barmitzvah” to show his commitment to Judaism. The video for his latest song, HYFR, claims to display the events that took place at the simchah.

I’d suggest reality was a little different to the musical entertainment version, given that the latter features more expletives than a Malcolm Tucker pep-talk. After opening with footage of a young Aubrey mouthing "mazeltov" and dancing at a simchah it moves on to the modern day.

Set in a synagogue the video shows Drake apparently performing his maftir before going on to enjoy the simchah by lighting candles, smashing up a re-barmitzvah cake, being carried on a chair, and tucking into a typically gargantuan kosher buffet.

It is a truly bizarre, but somehow heart-warming, display.

The explicit language and adult themes in the video preclude me from showing you it here on a family newspaper’s website, but if you are not easily offended and want to take a look you can see it here on YouTube, where it has racked up an impressive 1.24 million YouTube hits since its MTV premiere last week. (WARNING/disclaimer: The video features repeated use of highly offensive language and is not suitable for viewing at work or by children under the age of 18).

I suspect this is not the last we’ll hear of Drake, or his Jewish roots.

The virgin, journeyman and 334th player in the world all meet at the British Open

Mark Garrod

The world’s best golfers – minus those who are on baby watch or injured – are at Royal Lytham this week for the Open Championship, one of the highlights of the British sporting summer. But the field also contains some names that will not be that familiar, even to those who follow the game fairly closely. Here are a few facts about a selection of players whose hope, of course, is that they will soon become household stars.

ANIRBAN LAHIRI
Indian Lahiri won the Asian qualifier in Bangkok in March, two months after attending a 10-day course at the Vipassana International Meditation Centre in Hyderabad.
“I had done it before and the course has always helped me to rediscover myself,” he said. “I didn’t go specifically for my golf – it has always helped me to get clarity in my personal life and in my head and that translates into my golf.
“I’ve become less angry on the golf course. It has also helped me stay in the present and not get ahead of myself.
“My expectations went up after the victory last year at the Panasonic Open and I started getting in my own way. That is what I must do differently this year.”
As for the coming Open the 25-year-old added: “It’s a great feeling and I think it will only sink in once I tee off.”

ANDREW GEORGIOU
The South African’s website proudly displays the words 2012 Open Championship participant on its home page. That is how much it means to him.
Georgiou, a 26-year-old who came through the international qualifier in Johannesburg, is equally proud of his faith.
“Before every round of golf I commit it to Jesus, then go out and compete as hard as I can,” he said. “I know my Lord wants me to be a winner.”
His mother is the Editor and Publisher of Africa’s leading evangelical Christian magazine.
“There were many times in my teens where I could have tried drugs and gone down the wrong path, but I can happily say that I have never tried any type of drug in my life,” he continued.
“There was and is still the pressure of sexual immorality, but fortunately I can also say that I am waiting for marriage and wear a purity ring to this day.”
On playing in The Open he said: “I am naturally very excited and working hard to give of my very best. I certainly want to make the cut, then my goal is to finish in the top 10.
“If I get that far, who knows?”

TED POTTER JR
In his first season in America’s second division – what used to be known as the Nationwide Tour and is now the Web.com Tour – in 2004 the 28-year-old played 24 events and missed 24 cuts.
That’s right. Total earnings of zero dollars, zero cents.
It took him 18 of those tournaments to have a round in the 60s and only one more was to follow. He finished the year 194 over par.
On the smaller Hooters Tour, left-hander Potter won no fewer than 14 times, was twice Player of the Year and earned $650,000, but back on the Nationwide Tour in 2007 he survived the cut only five times in 20 starts, earned just over 16,000 and ended up 152 over par.
Things really began to change last year when he won over $400,000, won twice and finally graduated to the main circuit – and two weeks ago at the Greenbrier Classic he won that as well, was given a cheque for over 1million and with it a place in his first major through a mini-money list in the States.
“When you’re missing cuts every week you get down on yourself,” he said. “But I was still young – I knew I had a long road ahead of me.”
Now it is has led to Lytham.

TROY KELLY
Being beaten by Potter in a play-off in West Virginia denied the 33-year-old his first PGA Tour win, but he was still handed a place in the Open Championship as the highest non-exempt player in the event.
Kelly had hip-replacement surgery in September 2010 after being diagnosed with arthritis. At first he did not know what was causing pain in his left hip, tried to play through it for two years, but reached the point where he could barely walk.
“For me to just play this game at a high level, I had to go get it done,” Kelly said.
It took almost a year for his muscle strength to return to normal, then he finished 11th on the former Nationwide Tour and moved up into the big league.

NICK CULLEN
The 27-year-old Australian beat the experienced Peter Senior in a play-off to come through the international qualifier at Kingston Heath in Melbourne back in January.
Now the Indonesia Open champion as well – a win that took him from 648th in the world to 334th – he said: “It is a dream come true – The Open was the one event I loved watching as a kid.
“But it’s also my job now and I’ve got to treat it in a professional manner.
“I want to be playing majors every year. I don’t want this to be a one-off.”
The victory in Jakarta came on only his second trip to Asia.
“I wasn’t sure at the start of the week how to go about it. Food for example — what to eat? Everything is very different. I ate a lot of bananas – probably five or six each round.”

Why rabbis should get on their bikes

The first Rabbis Relay Ride which ended recently appears to have been a great success, raising £30,000 for charity.

More than 20 rabbis took the saddle at various stages along the way from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

What was significant is that the participants embraced representatives from across the board, Orthodox, Reform, Liberal and Masorti.

Is this the beginning of a changing climate within British Jewry? Once upon a time such an event would have hard to mount because too many Orthodox rabbis would have objected to the use of “rabbi” to describe ministers of other movements.

Peer to play Sharapova

Israel's Shahar Peer has been handed a daunting first-round draw against former Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova at the Olympic Games.

Peer, Israel's only representative in the singles competition, will be determined to give an improved showing after losing in the opening round of the grand slam event earlier this month, but she will give away a big height advantage against the competition's third seed from Russia, a player she has never beaten.

Peer recently told the JC: "Grass isn't my favourite surface, but I'll give it my best shot at the Olympics."

Lebanon's judo team refuses to train alongside Israelis

Lebanon’s Olympic judo team has refused to train next to Israeli competitors during a session ahead of London 2012.

Olympic officials were forced to erect a special screen at the Excel venue following a complaint from a member of the Lebanese delegation.

It is understood the two squads had been warming up next to each other when the complaint was made on Friday afternoon.

An Israeli official at the venue confirmed a partition had been used to block the view and said the session had then continued with minimum disruption.

He said the Israeli squad had been happy with the original training arrangements but had not objected to the screen being used.

It is not known whether members of the Lebanon team will refuse to compete against Israel’s judo players if they are drawn together during the Olympics.

Singing about Elijah at the end of Shabbat

After reciting havdalah at the end of Shabbat, many people sing “Eliyahu Hanavi”, a song about the prophet Elijah and our hope that he may arrive soon to herald of the coming of the Messiah. (As Malachi prophesies, in the haftarah read before Pesach, Elijah will be sent before the “great and awesome day of the Lord”.)

The Talmud refers to Shabbat as “a taste of the world to come”. Shabbat’s holiness and respite from the distractions of everyday life are a preview of life in messianic times. As we return to our weekday lives and leave the holiness of Shabbat, we pray that Eliyahu may come and bring with the Messiah with him.

According to some traditions, after Shabbat, Eliyahu keeps note of those who have observed the seventh day well and deserve reward. “Eliyahu Hanavi zachur latov” (Elijah the Prophet, may he be remembered for good), as he is called in the Grace after meals, is punned to be read mazkir latov, “records for good”.

Drake — the rap star who performs at barmitzvahs

Aubrey Drake Graham, better known as Drake, is one of the world's most successful performers, and without doubt the most popular Jewish rapper/singer - his father, Dennis Graham, is an African-American musician from Memphis, but his mother, Sandi, is a Jewish Canadian.

He has achieved enormous success in the world of hip hop by being incredibly un-hip hop - instead of the usual tough-guy bravado he is unerringly sensitive and prone to self-doubt and, even as the 25-year-old enjoys the multi-millionaire, jet-set lifestyle, he takes great pains to make that lifestyle seem the cause for some soul-searching.

He has created a new paradigm for rap - the tormented solipsist, forever showing his emotions and scrutinising his actions. And in so doing he has divided opinion between those who believe the former teen TV star from an affluent suburb of Toronto is the antithesis of the authentic, street-wise hip hop hood, and those - not just screaming kids but serious music fans who love his melodies, which he raps and sings - who have been won over by him.

"There were people who incorporated melody before me," says Drake, talking backstage at the 02 in south-east London, where 18,000 people have converged to see him play the biggest concert of his career, "but I would deem myself the first person to successfully rap and sing."

He considers the question of his persona and agrees that: "Yes, there are aspects of it that are new in the rap world. But it's not a gimmick. I just sort of exist and people embrace it. I'm one of the few artists who gets to be himself every day. It doesn't take me six hours to get ready and I don't have to wake up in the morning and remember to act like this or talk like this. I just have to be me. That's one of the favourite parts of my life - I've done this purely by being myself."

But how much of his songs are we to believe? For example, on the opening track of his 2011 album Take Care, titled Over My Dead Body, he reveals that he performed at a barmitzvah to help pay for a friend's lawyer at a court case. Did this really happen?

"Well, I have a lot of brothers, people I consider family. That line in the song isn't false - I went and did what I had to do after one of my friends got into some legal trouble and it was very expensive and he was having trouble dealing with it."

Drake is famously proud of his Jewish roots. In April this year, amid tremendous publicity, he even had a "re-barmitzvah", footage of which was viewed by a million people on YouTube - "the most watched barmitzvah film clip in human history", as one website put it. But the idea that Drake - who has sold millions of records and was recently voted second-hottest rapper in the world by MTV, ahead of Jay-Z, and Kanye West - turned up at some random barmitzvah seems a little far-fetched.

"I did!" he says, laughing. "I actually went and did a barmitzvah for a family in New York. It was very nice, and they were an incredible family to deal with. I tried to edit out as much swearing as I could, and I loved it, man - the kids loved it, the parents loved it."

Presumably the guests were surprised to see him there? "They were pretty surprised. I came out from behind the DJ booth and started rocking… It was cool. It brought back memories - I've been to a lot of barmitzvahs in my life. I've never been to one like that, though. They shut down the whole street for this kid. They paid me a lot of money to come - they were very generous."

Does he make a habit of this kind of thing? My son turns 13 next March…

"I'd love to!" he says, and you could almost believe him. "If I'm in town, I'll do it - it'll be on the house."

Such a nice Jewish boy. And yet his music is complex. His songs show a young man suffering crises of conscience, often making bad choices, wracked with guilt and regret.

He highlights his song Marvin's Room, in which he describes his numerous sexual conquests, but not in the bragging way expected from hip hop artists. "That's me asking: 'Do I need to get a grip on my life?'," he says. "I have friends who are in committed relationships and spend all their time focused on one woman and I'm behaving like that! You start questioning your own morals. I'm 25 and single. I'm not supposed to care about deeper things right now, I'm supposed to be wild. But there are nights when you sit back and wonder, 'Damn, is this right?'"

He admits he worries about aspects of his personal life, including a very Jewish concern about how often he calls his mother.

"That's one of the things that plagues my mind. My relationship with my family. Am I talking to my mother enough? That kind of thing. Asking myself: 'Are you changing? Are you a different person?' Those are my issues now. If I wasn't famous I don't think those would be my issues at all. They would be: how am I going to support myself? I wouldn't be able to get any girl that I wanted. I wouldn't be travelling the world and I wouldn't be showered with all this affection."

Does he ever worry that he is in danger of suffering from Paradise Syndrome, where having everything you want induces misery and despair?

"No, no, no," he says. "It's not to the point where, like: 'Oh, now I have everything I want and I hate my life'. No, I'm happy."

The dilemma, of course, is that Drake has made his name, and his fortune, by expressing the sweet sadness of moral confusion. How to continue if he stays happy?

"I'm always looking for something else," he says, by way of reassurance, as he prepares to entertain 18,000 Londoners. "I'm always looking for what's beyond this point. Not to sound depressing or anything, but I don't just tell myself: 'Oh, everything's all good, man'. Life is good. But I'm not naive. Nothing is all good."

EU upgrades trade and diplomatic ties with Israel

Earlier this month, President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, visited Israel.

Just weeks after EU foreign ministers had castigated Israel for its policies in the West Bank, Mr Barroso said at the official dinner hosted by Israeli President Shimon Peres: “We are committed to continually strengthening the vital links between Europe and Israel — economic, social, cultural and scientific, and I reiterate the EU’s fundamental commitment to Israel’s security.”

Those sentiments were embodied in an EU move this week to upgrade its diplomatic and trade ties with Israel.
Part of its new European Neighbourhood Policy, the European Commission’s Action Plan looks to boost the “scope and intensity of political co-operation” between the EU and Israel, to reduce trade barriers, and to align economic legislation in specific areas.

It will also deepen “trade and economic relations, extending them to cover, inter alia, the service sector, particularly financial services, and provide the conditions for increasing investment and exports”.
Even if the Association Agreement — the first EU-Israel agreement, signed in 1995 — remains the framework for co-operation, the Action Plan is a declaration of mutual objectives and commitment to building foundations for enhanced EU-Israel relations.

This is very good news for Israel and the EU. Another surprising positive is that the Action Plan covers issues such as fighting terrorism and combating antisemitism.

A step towards better and stronger long-term relations between the EU and Israel, if this partnership becomes as strong as expected, Israel will be on track to become a member of the EU.

Difficulties will arrive when the European Parliament discusses the matter: the traditionally critical voices will try to impeach the plan or reduce it to a vague document.

The European Parliament will be the Action Plan’s crossroads, but this plan is a strong basis for Israel to move closer to the EU.

Why shun our Becks appeal?

This is the day to consider the 2012 Olympics and the Jewish question. And what is the Jewish question? That is: "how many Jews are there in the British Olympic team?" And the answer is "none". Not a single one. And don't imagine I haven't checked. I've been up and down the lists searching with a feather and a candle.

I saw the name Mo Farah - short for Moses or even Moishe? Then I looked at a photograph of him. He certainly doesn't look Jewish. There's a woman in the riding team called Phillips and I know a lot of Jews called Phillips. Disappointingly, she turns out to be the Queen's granddaughter. Then I wondered if Bradley Wiggins's real name wasn't perhaps Baruch Weinstein. But would any Jew spend days shlepping a bike up the Alps when he could have done it by car?

Do the selectors have something against Jews? You couldn't blame them. Scarcely any British Jews have won medals of any sort in the past 50 years and Harold Abrahams, winner of the 100 metres in Paris in 1924, is our only Olympic champion of the whole modern era.

Perhaps that is the reason for the mind-boggling exclusion from the GB football team of David Beckham, role model, superhero and campaigner for London 2012. They've tried to pretend it's because he's too old and too slow or something. But I think we know the real reason he was not chosen - because he's too Jewish. He's one of us: his favourite kicks are free kicks, his wife's in the shmatte business, he's got a verse from the Song of Songs tattooed on his arm in Hebrew and he named his eldest son Brooklyn after a Jewish part of New York.

His father Ted, though not Jewish, played some football for Wingate, a London Jewish team, and - more importantly - his maternal grandfather, Joseph West, was a Jew. David says he has had more contact with Judaism than with any other religion and has referred to himself as "half-Jewish." He has been photographed wearing a kippah and looks quite as comfortable in it as he does in Giorgio Armani underpants, though, I hasten to add, he's never been seen wearing a kippah held in place by a hair-grip on the field.

So there are no Jewish British Olympians this year, and don't even bother to look. There were never many. In 1960, I remember the JC got so desperate it claimed Dorothy Hyman, silver medallist in the 100 metres and bronze medallist in the 200 metres. But what's in a name? Hyman was the daughter of a coalminer in Cudworth, near Barnsley, a village not noted for its Jewish population. She also ran the sprint relay. She handled a baton but never a batmitzvah.

When the GB football team runs out for the first time, I shall not say a shecheheyanu. A genuine impoliteness has been committed against Beckham and the public, an act of stupidity.

A home has not been found for football's wandering sort-of-Jew. He has taken it with good grace, as he takes everything. But it's time methinks for another Hebrew tattoo: "eli eli lama azavtani" - my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Roberto Hernandez has an effective debut in first minor-league start in Lake County

Hernandez threw 66 pitches, 44 for strikes. For the most part his velocity ranged between 89 and 92 mph.

Gallery preview

EASTLAKE, Ohio -- There was no name on the back of Roberto Hernandez's uniform Wednesday night as he threw his warmup pitches at Classic Park. He was wearing a different number as well, 48 instead of 55.

It was the perfect disguise for a man who lived a lie for the last 11 years.

Hernandez worked methodically in the pen, throwing two and four-seam fastballs. St. Edward's Alex Lavisky caught him as fans hung over the railing high above the bullpen watching the big man sweat.

He threw several minutes out of the windup before taking a break to towel off on the hot night. Then Hernandez pitched out of the stretch. When he finished, he was going over the signs with Lavisky when a kid named Dannie Green yelled something in Spanish that started with "Roberto."

Hernandez turned and flipped him a ball as he walked toward the Class A Lake County Captains dugout. Green leaned over the rail and made a nice catch, out-stretching the guy standing next to him.

"I just used the Spanish from the Taco Bell commercial," said Green, with a laugh. "Instead of Taco Bell, I said baseball."

Hernandez, arrested in the Dominican Republic on Jan. 19 for identity fraud, pitched at Classic Park in 2003 when everyone knew him as Fausto Carmona. He won 17 games that year for the Captains. Three years later he won 19 for the Indians, who finished one victory shy of the World Series.

He has been up and down since, but never lower than he was after his arrest. He was forbidden to leave his country, his career in danger. On Saturday, six months after his arrest, he was finally allowed back into the United States.

Wednesday night, while serving a three-week MLB-imposed suspension, he took his first step toward returning to the mound for the Indians. Hernandez, whose age jumped from 28 to 31 when he was outed by Dominican authorities, pitched five innings against the West Michigan Whitecaps, Detroit's Class A team.

He allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out four, didn't walk a batter and induced eight ground-ball outs.

"You expected to see some rust, but there wasn't much," said Carter Hawkins, the Indians' assistant director of player development. "It shows you the amount of work he did in the Dominican. That's a good sign."

Hernandez threw 66 pitches, 44 for strikes. For the most part his velocity ranged between 89 and 92 mph. He topped out at 93 and dropped to 85 in the fourth and fifth innings.

"That's what he's thrown the last couple of years," said Hawkins. "He can get major-league outs with that. It's just a matter of command."

Hernandez earned the win in the 5-4 victory. It was his first victory since he beat Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader on Sept. 20. The soonest Hernandez can join the Indians is Aug. 11. He'll probably make three or four more starts before that happens.

"I felt good," said Hernandez. "It felt to great to be out on that mound. I've pitched here a lot of times here and I remember everything."

Hernandez said he was happy with his pitching line. "I focused on keeping the ball down, making ground balls and throwing strikes," he said.

Two of the three runs he allowed came on a first-inning homer by Aaron Westbrook. The runs were unearned because of an error.

"It was a sinker that didn't move," said Hernandez. "It stayed on the plate. The first inning the ball was a little bit up."

Hernandez will throw a bullpen for Lake County on Saturday. Then he'll make another start, either with the Captains or Class AA Akron.

"I don't know where I'll go after I throw the bullpen on Saturday," said Hernandez. "I'm happy. This is a second opportunity for me. I'm very, very happy."

Hernandez watched the Indians beat Detroit, 5-3, in the clubhouse after he left the game.

"I'll be back [there] soon," he said.

Iran blames Israel for Bulgaria terrorist attack

Iran's UN envoy has accused Israel of staging a suicide bomb attack on its own tourists in a bus explosion last Wednesday, in which five Israelis were killed and dozens more were injured.

The attack took place at the airport of Burgas, Bulgaria, a popular seaside resort for Israeli tourists.

Israel has accused Iran and the Lebanese terror group Hizbollah of the incident. Iran has denied these allegations.

In a UN Security Council debate on Wednesday, Iran's UN Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee said: "It's amazing that just a few minutes after the terrorist attack, Israeli officials announced that Iran was behind it. We have never and will not engage in such a despicable attempt on the lives of innocent people."

"Such terrorist operation could only be planned and carried out by the same regime whose short history is full of state terrorism operations and assassinations aimed at implicating others for narrow political gains," Mr Khazaee declared. He continued by saying that there had been "many examples" of Israel killing "its own citizens and innocent Jewish people during the last couple of decades."

Israel's deputy UN Ambassador Haim Waxman reaffirmed his government's view that Iran's fingerprints were all over last week's bomb attack, "and in dozens of other terrorist plots in recent months that span five continents and at least 24 countries."

"These comments are appalling, but not surprising from the same government that says the 9/11 attack was a conspiracy theory and denies the Holocaust," Mr Waxman said. "The time has come for the world to put an end to this campaign of terror, once and for all."
