New bereavement group for young adults

A recruitment consultant whose father died suddenly from cancer last year has put money into a counselling group helping young Jews to deal with the loss of a parent.

Assisting those aged 18-to-30, Aftershock recently held its first gathering and will meet monthly at Jewish Care’s Martin B Cohen Centre in Edgware.

Jason Rumney, 25, from Essex, had searched for a counselling service after the death of his father last September. He wanted to socialise with other young people who were in a similar situation.

He donated £2,000 to Aftershock, which is run with Jewish Care and the Jewish Bereavement Counselling Service.
JBCS volunteer counsellor Cindy Collick led the first session. She pointed out that those who were young when a parent died needed “very different” support.

“There was nothing like this in north-west London. We do group work and shared experience. We leave for the second part and the group has a social.

“We want them to build up a social network and meet on their own more than once a month.”

The sessions will cover different aspects of bereavement. “Obviously everyone’s journey is different. We hope to address dealing with guilt, anger, sorrow and loss. What will it be like to get married with no mum there? What about graduating from university? What will the changes be at home?”

Dublin's challengers will have them in their sights

Fintan O’Toole

They celebrated in style and after a barren 16 years few would begrudge them.

When the Dublin footballers finally got their hands on Sam Maguire last September it was inevitable that they would savour the success over the winter months.

But the whispers soon began asking whether Dublin would be able to rein in the joyous recollection of their 2011 achievement in time for the 2012 campaign. They had climbed to the summit yet did that mean their appetites were sated?

An indifferent league campaign means the true picture of Dublin has still to be revealed this year but it is only in the championship arena that they will be properly judged. Next Sunday’s Leinster opener against Louth will offer the first glimpses of what condition Pat Gilroy’s men are currently in.

The manager appears to be making every effort to ensure they are correctly calibrated for the defence of their title. The tone Gilroy adopted when speaking this week smacked of a man who has not lost sight of the principles that ensured Dublin became All-Ireland champions. Organising their team holiday before Christmas assisted their fitness work in the early months of the year and placing the famed canister in cold storage in February ensured it would not become a distraction.

Any concerns about the lack of game time undertaken by key men like Alan and Bernard Brogan were assuaged as well. The fate of defending champions Tyrone in 2006, Kerry in 2010 and Cork in 2011 has proven instructive. No team can afford to be drained of several stars in the summer. The fitness concerns over the Brogan brothers in the spring needed to be nipped in the bud there and then. Gilroy has sought to do that by allowing them time to recover in the hope that they will be well come the summer showdowns.

In addition Colm Cooper’s remark recently that he needed a mental break as much as a physical break after Dr Crokes All-Ireland semi-final defeat in February, could easily have applied to the Brogans.

The recent All-Ireland success of Jim Gavin’s U21 side was a further boost to Gilroy’s squad. Rory O’Carroll and James McCarthy were the picks of the crop from 2010 while there are high hopes Jack McCaffrey from the 2012 batch can add another dynamic dimension to their half-back play, Emmett Ó Conghaile will in time be a midfield powerhouse and Ciarán Kilkenny, once his Leaving Cert commitments have abated, can be another scoring weapon in attack.

But their development will take time and while Kilkenny in particular is a stellar talent, the progression from U21 in spring to senior in summer will need to be rapid.

There are other issues for Dublin to contend with. Hunger will be a key one. The pain they felt after the pummelling at the hands of Kerry in 2009 and being pipped by Cork in 2010 helped fuel their thirst for success last summer. What will motivate them now? As Cork discovered last summer against a fiercely determined Mayo outfit, attempting to regain that level of drive is extremely difficult.

There were signs of lethargy in Dublin’s play during the league, most strikingly against Down in Newry and Mayo in Castlebar. On both occasions Gilroy did not spare his players in his post-match criticism where he pinpointed a glaring lack of intensity in their performances. The assumption is he will have addressed that in the interim and it is better for those shortcomings to become apparent earlier rather than later in a year.

The standard of opposition Dublin will face is also salient. The side they vanquished last September will certainly be in contention, irrespective of Kerry’s flat display against Tipperary last Sunday and how they fare against Cork on Sunday week. Their opponents in that Páirc Uí Chaoimh tie should pose a stronger challenge this year with more of their players on the pitch than on the treatment table and a sense of annoyance within their squad at how meekly they bowed out in that quarter-final against Mayo last August.

Within their own provincial boundaries, Kildare will pose a significant threat to Dublin. Given this could be the final throw of the dice in Kieran McGeeney’s reign, the stakes have been raised considerably and the level of performance they produced in streaking clear of Tyrone in the Division 2 final indicated that their squad recognises that. Having scratched their silverware itch in the league, Kildare will be eager to do likewise in the Leinster championship.

Tyrone would have hoped to mount a fierce assault this season but luckless injuries look to have complicated matters for them once more. Mayo and Donegal may be still just off an All-Ireland winning side but both are the type of outfits that could easily reach the last four and bring a reigning champions campaign to an end. These are challenges Dublin will know they have to meet. The tricky part will be doing just that.

Are vitamin supplements good for your health?

If I asked you to think about which foods are healthy, the chances are that you would probably include, say, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, plain yogurt, legumes, poultry, olive oil and wholegrains. You might be less sure precisely why these foods are considered healthy, but in general terms, they cover all the food groups and are rich in nutrients.

Of course the nutrients in food are of particular interest, but despite their importance, focusing on nutrients in isolation isn’t always useful, simply because I feel that there is an increasing belief that individual nutrients come in capsules, not food. If you are in any doubt, take a look at your local health store — they are likely to stock more supplements, capsules, powders, pills and oils than they are food.

While there is nothing wrong with supplements per se, I worry that we take too many without the correct advice and without understanding what to expect. Nutrients are not inert substances nor are they always benign, but as they are found in food, we tend to think of them as being always good. But here’s the irony — the people that take supplements tend to be health-aware, fit and active with a good diet and don’t need them (that’s not to say there is no benefit), while the people who really could do with extra nutrients because of a poor diet and lack of exercise just don’t bother.

So when it comes to supplements, what should we be taking? First off, please don’t feel pressured into taking anything at all — the chances of you actually being deficient in a nutrient are very low. That said, you might still benefit from a little extra chosen from a small, targeted list.

My personal view is that the following are probably worthwhile: 500mg of omega 3 oils twice a day as it helps combat inflammation, enhances insulin sensitivity, offers a degree of protection against cardiovascular disease and helps hormonal balance; a probiotic in capsule form, as they have many roles, not least aiding digestion but also increasing mineral and vitamin B absorption from food and acting as a buffer against unwanted bacteria in food; and lastly, a green drink — often made from algae or the like (who knew that pond scum could be nutritious?) and particularly rich in antioxidants and minerals, but it is in food form and so more easily digested.

Sacks challenged over interfaith views

A number of rabbis here have been talking about an article in the latest edition of Tradition, the American journal of Orthodox thought published by the mainstream Rabbinical Council of America.

It is written by Alan Jotkowitz, who is director of the Jakobovits Centre for Medical Ethics at Ben Gurion University, and is a critique of the interfaith views of Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks.

The author is an admirer of the Chief Rabbi whom he describes as “probably the world’s most foremost expositor of Jewish values and ethics”.

Nevertheless, he questions whether the Chief Rabbi’s attitude towards other religions has strayed too far from conventional rabbinic positions.

The title of the article describes Sacks’s theology as “radical” – generally not a term of commendation in these circles.

Jotkowitz focuses mostly on the Chief’s 2002 book, The Dignity of Difference (which was subsequently revised after leading strictly Orthodox rabbis branded it heretical). Comments such as “In heaven there is truth; on earth there are truths” – rewritten in the second edition – lent credence to the truth claims of other faiths, according to the Chief Rabbi’s critics.

But Jotkowitz is not wholly convinced by the revisions and argues that the Chief’s ideas remains theologically problematic.

In contrast, Jotkowitz says that Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik “makes it clear that a Jew has to believe that his or her faith is supreme and there is an absolute truth to that faith, even at the expense of the beliefs of other religions”.

Claire Lomas finishes marathon thanks to Israeli invention

A paralysed woman has crossed the finish line of the London marathon after walking for 16 days with the help of an Israeli invention.

Claire Lomas, a former semi-professional British horse-rider, was told she would never walk again after an accident in May 2007.

But five years on she has proved her doubters wrong and raised more than £83,000 for spinal research.

She was able to enter the marathon and take on her 16 day march after discovering the ReWalk, a pair of motorised trousers created by Israeli entrepreneur Amit Goffer. Mr Goffer, whose creation costs £43,000, was paralysed in a car accident in 1997.

He came up with the ReWalk to enable paraplegics to walk and climb stairs with the aid of crutches.

The device, which involves sensor-triggered crutches that tilt the wearer's body so they can move forward, is the only one that would have given Ms Lomas mobility.

She told the JC that it reminded her of Wallace and Gromit's "wrong trousers".

Special Kaye inspires England FC

HAMILTON FX OLIM LEAGUE
Aviv City 1 England FC 2

Aviv City hosted England FC on Saturday night with both teams playing for what must be only pride with the league surely out of reach baring any collapse from Raanana and Jerusalem.

Aviv got off to a flying start with star striker Adam Jaffe firing home from 30 yards, leaving the keeper no chance and probably a hole in the net with a contender for goal of the season.

That was the wake-up call that England needed and they straight away took the game to Aviv and pressed high up the field, getting into a few dangerous positions with Lewis Kaye and Kfir Rusin a constant threat.

The second goal came after 10 minutes when another flowing move saw England's Motti Colman - 25 yards out and with the Aviv team giving him the freedom of the city - beautifully curling the ball into the corner.

The pace of the game increased, with even the ref complimenting both teams on the on the end-to-end action, with England probably edging it. However, Aviv Saphir and Kfir Rusin missing great chances, ensuring the teams went into the break all square.

There was a higher tempo to the match in the second half, with the midfield battle becoming feisty as Colman and Uri received yellow cards. England FC were shading it with Omri Hammama through on goal twice but he was unable to convert.

The decisive moment saw Lewis Kaye run down the left beating a few defenders on the way and put in a low cross that Hammama was on hand to bundle over the line to finally give England the lead.

A few minutes later a nice act of sportsmanship occurred when Roy and the Aviv keeper both went up for a ball. The Aviv keeper came worse off and whilst on the floor Gabi slotted home to an empty net but the England team decided not to take the goal and pleaded with the ref to overrule and give a drop ball which he did. The Aviv keeper required stitches while Roy was left with a headache.

Man-of-the-Match Lewis Kaye said: "It was great to get back on the pitch after a couple of months out injured. I'm happy to my teammates get through a difficult game.

"It is always nice to get man of the match, but for me the most important thing was to get the three points."

President hopes for short term

The 74-year-old president-elect of Manchester Jewish Representative Council hopes his term of office will be short as he wants younger people to assume leadership roles.

Currently vice-president, Israel activist Frank Baigel is the sole nominee to succeed Lucille Cohen, who is vacating the post because of family commitments. The retired dentist monitors anti-Israel material online and has lobbied MPs and MEPs extensively on shechitah.

"I expect to be gone as president within a year or two," he said. "We are very pleased younger members have taken an active role in the council, which is very promising."

Mr Baigel added that the council was "involving people who are more IT literate. We need to improve the technology we are using as the role of the council is changing. It is focused more on interfaith, which is something we have to do and be seen to be doing."

Heritage expert urges rethink on repairs VAT

Jewish heritage activist Dr Sharman Kadish has called on the government to rethink plans to withdraw VAT exemption on repairs to listed buildings, claiming it would hinder the preservation of old synagogues.

She said the measure would have "a detrimental effect on historic synagogues - and churches - which want to improve their facilities by installing toilets, kitchens and disability access, which are vital in keeping these buildings in use".

Added Dr Kadish, the founding director of Jewish Heritage: "It is bad enough that the guaranteed 100 per cent reimbursement of VAT on government-funded repair grants was withdrawn last year. In general, it is invidious that VAT is charged on repairs to old buildings but not on new-build projects. This merely encourages developers to demolish rather than to invest in regeneration, which is greener and makes economic sense."

At Plymouth Synagogue - which celebrates its 250th anniversary later this month - treasurer Dr Peter Lee said: "As an independent community, we have to raise money to do everything." The VAT change "would be a major burden. The biggest impact would be on small communities."

Fortunately, the synagogue, which has around 50 members, completed major structural repairs to its roof and a wall a few years ago.

Another 18th-century synagogue, Sandys Row in London's East End, has just carried out a £500,000 restoration. Board member Jack Gilbert said that if the new VAT rules had been implemented "we would have to find at least another £80,000, possibly more." He criticised the government for "chopping and changing" the regulations.

Howard Miller, chief executive of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation, said VAT exemption had saved the community "quite a lot of money" on the last repair of the roof of Britain's oldest synagogue, Bevis Marks in the City. The congregation also has another listed building, Lauderdale Road Synagogue in Maida Vale.

Around 30 synagogues are housed in listed buildings and there are numerous other listed sites of Jewish interest. Three present or former synagogue buildings are identified as "at risk" by Jewish Heritage.

Harry, it's over to you

Who in their right mind would take the England job? One has to ask.

In fact, it's the question a handful of respected managers in the game will have asked themselves this morning.

Indeed very few people took to Fabio Capello because he wasn't English and didn't speak the lingo.

His record in qualifying campaigns spoke for itself but he failed to get the best out of the players when it really mattered, and left the nation disillusioned once more.

So who next?

Like many, I believe Hary Redknapp is the man for the job. Pretty much the only man for the job. It appears I'm in a dying breed of supporters that cares about the national team.

There are not many strong candidates. In fact I can count the serious contenders on one hand. And how long do they get before the same people start sharpening their knives (and pencils)?

So, back to Harry. The clear favourite, the obvious choice and pretty much the only choice.

England must, MUST learn that short-term fixes don't work. They must plant a seed for the future to ensure continuity and long-term success.

At 64, Redknapp has five maybe six more good years in him at the top level. People might say look at Fergie - still going strong in his 70's, but he's a one-off and Harry has had hearts problems so even though he says he prefers the daily involvement, the pace of international football could suit him better.

Why Harry? The proof is in the pudding. It's not only Spurs fans that are waxing lyrical about the team's progress over the past couple of years, as well as their easy-on-the-eye style of play. He's taken them into the Champions League and currently has turned them into Premier League contenders in no time.

He's the top man who has helped shape the careers of the likes of Lampard, (Joe) Cole and Ferdinand and he will bring back the pride in playing for the badge and getting the best out of the players. No-one knows the players better.

The so-called 'golden generation' came and went empty-handed. Now isn't the time to make empty promises. It's time to knuckle down and start with a blank template. Again.

In fact, many are saying this could be the best thing that happened to English football for a long, long time.

Harry, it's over to you.

Steve Karsay, Scott Erickson hired as minor league pitching coaches by Cleveland Indians

The Indians have just about completed their minor league player development staff for the 2012 season..

Steve KarsaySteve Karsay pitched for the Indians from 1998-2001.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There is a big-league flavor to the Indians minor league coaching staff.

Former big leaguers Steve Karsay and Scott Erickson have been hired as pitching coaches. Karsay, who pitched 11 seasons in the big leagues, will coach the Indians' Arizona Rookie League pitchers. Erickson will coach at Class A Carolina.

Karsay pitched with the Indians from 1998 through 2001. Erickson went 142-136 in 15 big-league seasons. He won 20 games for the world champion Twins in 1991. It will be Karsay and Erickson's first professional coaching jobs.

Francisco Cabrera is the new hitting coach for the Tribe's Dominican Summer League team. It was Cabrera's two-run pinch-hit single that won Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS for Atlanta against Pittsburgh.

The new field coordinator will be Rob Leary, who spent the last nine years working with the Red Sox. He replaces Tom Wiedenbauer, promoted to first base coach on Manny Acta's big league staff.

Mickey Callaway is the new pitching coordinator. He replaces Dave Miller, who was promoted to Acta's staff as bullpen coach. Callaway was the pitching coach at Class A Kinston last year.

Here are the other coordinators: Alan Zinter, hitting; Travis Fryman, infield; James Quinlan, rehab; Jake Beiting, strength and conditioning. The Indians still need to hire a base running/outfield coordinator to replace Gary Thurman, who was hired by the Marlins to be on Ozzie Guillen's staff.

The Latin America staff stays the same with Nelson Perez, strength and conditioning, Julio Rangel, mental skills coordinator and Lino Diaz, cultural development coordinator. Johnny Goryl, Ken Rowe and Minnie Mendoza remain as advisors.

As for changes in minor league managers, Dave Wallace moves from short-season Class A Mahoning Valley to Class A Lake County. Ted Kubiak, who managed Lake County last season, will take over Mahoning Valley.

Edwin Rodriguez, as previously announced, will manage Class A Carolina. Rodriguez managed the Marlins last year before getting fired.

Here is a quick look at the coaching staffs:

Class AAA Columbus: Mike Sarbaugh, manager, Phil Clark, hitting; Ruben Niebla, pitching, Michael Salazar, athletic trainer.

Class AA Akron: Chris Tremie, manager, Rouglas Odor, hitting, Tony Arnold, pitching, Chad Wolfe, athletic trainer.

Class A Carolina: Edwin Rodriguez, manager, Scott Erickson, pitching, Jeremy Heller, athletic trainer. Hitting coach has yet to be hired.

Class A Lake County: Dave Wallace, manager, Jim Rickon, hitting, Jeff Harris, pitching, Bobby Ruiz, athletic trainer.

Class A Mahoning Valley: Ted Kubiak, manager, Tony Mansolino, hitting, Greg Hibbard, pitching, Matt Beauregard, athletic trainer.

Rookie League Arizona Indians: Anthony Medrano, manager, Steve Karsay, pitching, Junior Betances, hitting, Dennis Malave, coach, Ted Blackwell, athletic trainer.

Rookie Dominican Summer League Indians: Max Diaz, manager; Mario Brito, pitching, Francisco Cabrera, hitting, Carlos Fermin, coach, Miguel Ledesma, athletic trainer.

Misterman

There is one man but many voices in Enda Walsh's 90-minute rampage through a psychotic's mind, with Cillian Murphy giving a compelling performance as an oddball Irish evangelist descending into insanity.

Murphy's Thomas Magill is holed up in a disused warehouse where he re-enacts recorded encounters with his hometown's "sinners". He inhabits each character, segueing from one to the other and switching between genders, until it seems that the entire town's population is on stage.

If the intention of Walsh, who also directs, was to transport us into the mind of an insane person, perhaps inevitably, he does not quite succeed. But we certainly get a sense of Magill's internal chaos and, for that, Murphy deserves, and will probably get, a hatful of acting awards. (Tel: 020 7452 3000)

Extraordinary

The Guardian's letters page and its adjunct Corrections column is a constant source of fascination. This week it excelled itself with a letter from Ben (I am not an antisemite) White, letters attacking the Globe Theatre for not withdrawing its invitation to Habima to perform in London, a correction for having traduced the JC over a BNP blog, and this little gem:
"The caption on a photograph featuring passengers on a tram in Jerusalem observing a two-minute silence for Yom Hashoah, a day of remembrance for the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust, wrongly referred to the city as the Israeli capital. The Guardian style guide states: 'Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel; Tel Aviv is.'"
Well. Where to start? With one hand the Guardian giveth, with the other it taketh away. It carefully cloaks itself in we-love-the-Jews-hood by running the Yom Hashoah photograph in the first place. Even the Guardian couldn't find anything snarky to say in the caption.
But wait! Yes, it had made a mistake according to the paper's style guide. It is the paper's style guide, you see, which carelessly runs roughshod across international norms of sovereignty and a country's right of self-determination. No matter that Israelis believe Jerusalem to be their capital; the Guardian style guide trumps that belief, as simply wrong.
No ifs, buts, qualifications; the Guardian knows best. Here is The Times on the same issue: "Jerusalem must not be used as a metonym or variant for Israel. It is not internationally recognised as the Israeli capital, and its status is one of the central controversies in the Middle East." That's a reasonable and sane approach.
Sad conclusion: the Guardian has lost the plot.

Rabin's killer's brother released to mass outrage

The brother of the assassin who shot Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was greeted with furious demonstrations after his release from prison this week.

Hagai Amir, 43, whose brother Yigal shot Mr Rabin in 1995 during a peace rally in Tel Aviv, was released after more than 16 years in prison for helping his brother during his “research” prior to the murder. Amir told Israeli media he was “proud of what I did”.

Israeli media reported that Amir would be returning to his parents’ home in Herzilya, and the weekend in the West Bank settlement of Shavei Shomron.

Residents of the town were said to be furious that Amir would be spending Shabbat in the settlement, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Signs have been hung in the town, which say “Thou shalt not kill”. A local resident told Channel 10: “We dissociate ourselves entirely from this visit and of course we completely dissociate ourselves from anything linked to Rabin's murder. This is a completely private visit that people do not view favourably. We have no way to prevent it, but we are not pleased about it.”

Demonstrators were outside Ayalon Prison, watched closely by police, as Amir left, giving the victory salute. Yigal Amir is still serving a life sentence at Rimonim Prison.

Mr Rabin’s family have condemned the release of Amir, citing that the accomplice has shown “no remorse.” He is believed to have helped his brother conduct surveillance of the former prime minister’s home, as his brother plotted to kill the politician for advancing the two-state solution.

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger condemned Amir’s lack of remorse. "To be proud of participation in the murder [of Rabin] is an embarrassment, a disgrace and chutzpah. It seems that sixteen and a half years was not enough time for him to learn his lesson."

Labour leader Shelly Yacimovich said the victory celebrations greeting Amir on his release "suggest that the seeds of violent extremism that challenges Israeli democracy, still lie concealed among us, and still threaten Israeli society.

"We denounce the murderous brothers, and we will defeat them, and those like them. Today we salute Yitzhak Rabin and his legacy. His legacy that knew how to combine peace, security, a deep concern for Israeli society, and an endless contribution to it."
