President hopes for short term

The 74-year-old president-elect of Manchester Jewish Representative Council hopes his term of office will be short as he wants younger people to assume leadership roles.

Currently vice-president, Israel activist Frank Baigel is the sole nominee to succeed Lucille Cohen, who is vacating the post because of family commitments. The retired dentist monitors anti-Israel material online and has lobbied MPs and MEPs extensively on shechitah.

"I expect to be gone as president within a year or two," he said. "We are very pleased younger members have taken an active role in the council, which is very promising."

Mr Baigel added that the council was "involving people who are more IT literate. We need to improve the technology we are using as the role of the council is changing. It is focused more on interfaith, which is something we have to do and be seen to be doing."
