Angels of Mersey

Among the most valuable work being done to help Jewish students around the country is that of the dozens of chaplaincy families employed by organisations representing all spectrums of Jewish life.

New BBC documentary Angels of Mersey follows chaplains of all religions working in Liverpool. Among them is Rabbi Shmuli Brown, Chabad’s representative at universities in the city.

Last night’s episode showed him at work and featured his efforts to engage with young Jews arriving for Freshers’ Week. Rabbi Brown explained how he is contacted by worried parents and carries out meticulous online research to find out who will be studying on Merseyside and what assistance they might need.

While many Jewish families know of chaplains’ efforts, such work regularly goes unpublicised – largely for sensitivity reasons.

For every story about a Chabad dinner or gala fundraiser, there are half a dozen more about the help offered to students with eating disorders, drug problems, or homesickness that go untold.

University Jewish Chaplaincy, which has a dozen couples living and working across the length and breadth of the country, often finds itself in a conundrum: much of their most valuable work is sufficiently sensitive that those who have been helped cannot even tell their family or friends of the assistance they have received.

Getting the word out to parents is vital, especially for organisations largely dependent on charitable donations during difficult economic times.

The more that can be done to raise awareness of student chaplains, the better.

Watch Angels of Mersey here.

Why Munster believe in their new system

Barry Coughlan

As Munster prepare for the first of four games against Michael Bradley’s Edinburgh this weekend, Johne Murphy believes the team will deliver the goods for new coach Rob Penney.

Frustrated at the number of unforced errors in pre-season friendly games, Murphy nonetheless is convinced the competitive environment of the RaboDirect Pro12 will bring the best out of a developing side this weekend.

In relation to the 34-10 reversal against Aviva Premiership outfit London Irish, he admitted: “We’re lucky that the defeat didn’t count for points, but it is still very difficult to take, we’re getting used to the system and we really do believe in it, it’s something we really enjoy at the moment but I suppose it came down to individual errors, there were too many of them.

“We can’t implement what we’re trying to do if the individual error count is so high; that’s what we spoke about after, it’s about keeping the heads down and working hard, it’s as simple as that.”

But Murphy thinks the game plan they have embarked upon will pay dividends. “I don’t necessarily think it’s a high risk game (we’re playing),” he said, “ we just threw some (passes) we shouldn’t have thrown, we dropped some we should have caught, just little things like that that didn’t stick, things we’re well capable of doing.”

He wasn’t about to make excuses, pointing out: “There is no point in making excuses, it was just the individual error count that was too high and it needs to be a lot better next week. Last week against Bristol we had a better second half, no disrespect to Bristol but London Irish are probably a better outfit and they punished our mistakes; there were opportunities there and we either took the wrong option or were a pass away from getting it (right).

“That’s what we’re trying to do, we really do believe in it, we’re enjoying it and we just need to keep our heads down, keep working and it will pay off.”

If he felt, like others, frustrated, there is no sense of panic that the group is incapable of adapting to Penney’s more expansive plans. “(We’re) very frustrated as a group, I can’t say any more, everyone is involved, everyone is working and I suppose these three games (pre season) are for trying things, they don’t count and we’re lucky in that respect. Next Saturday is when it comes in, the mentality changes, everything changes, this is the money round next week and it’s when it all starts.

“There is no sense of panic, I never felt that once, we just kept trying; probably when we went behind there might have been a case of trying too hard, forcing the offload, forcing that chance and that leads (sometimes) to another knock on so you figure you must go for the miracle pass and that is just a shift in the scoreboard.

“But there is trust and belief as a group, we really believe in what we’re trying to do and I believe it is going to pay off; we will put sides to the sword.”

How my privileged place at the Munich Games gave me horrors

It has been very easy to get lost in the euphoria of the Olympics this summer but of course this year marks the 40th anniversary - next Wednesday - of the terrible events at Munich, when 11 Israeli sportsmen were murdered by Palestinian terrorists from the group Black September.

I had an unusual view as the scenes unfolded on September 5 1972. I was a university law student and had managed to secure an exciting summer job as part of the ITV Olympics team in London. I believed I would be no more than a glorified messenger but from day one I found myself monitoring the tape machines as they churned out the results. There was no email, no mobile phones or computers - recorded packages were sent down the line from Germany via a link available for half an hour in the morning and then again in the afternoon.

It was with disbelief and shock that I read the reports as the terrible events unfolded. Over the course of the next day, we discovered how gunmen wielding AK-47s had scaled the fence and made their way into the athletes' village to brutally attack and slaughter members of the Israeli delegation, who, only a few hours earlier, had enjoyed a performance of Fiddler on the Roof.

Two men were murdered immediately, nine others died during an unsuccessful rescue attempt that also left a German policeman dead.

I recall being particularly struck by the utter confusion in the stream of reports coming from Munich. Now, the world is sadly accustomed to dealing with terrorist attacks; at the time, we were far less experienced. No one in the newsroom could believe what they were hearing.

Earlier that week, I had been sent scurrying for still photographs when two black athletes turned a medal ceremony into a scene of protest, in a moment of high drama. But suddenly the teleprinters on my watch stopped churning out "flashes" of records from the Olympic complex, and offered instead details of the horror in Block 31 Connollystrasse in the Olympic Village.

The terrorists deliberately struck at the very heart of the Olympic movement. The Games were suspended and there was wild speculation about the fate of the Israeli men. But relief from the initial reports that the athletes had been rescued soon turned to utter despair as it was realised they had all been murdered while they sat helpless in helicopters. Everyone in the team I was working for was equally shaken. The sports world had witnessed moments of greatness and wonder, but never anything like this.

My immediate thought, as I trawled through reports of what had happened, was that the Games should be abandoned. At the time, I could not conceive of how they could carry on.

A hastily arranged memorial service was arranged in the Olympic Stadium. At first the Games were going to be cancelled but the Olympic committee decided otherwise, a decision approved by the Israeli government and team.

The Philippine and Algerian delegations went home, along with a few athletes from other countries. Forty years on, I remain of the view that the Games should have been abandoned. The argument against this is that this would have been seen as a victory for the terrorists. However, as a Dutch competitor commented: "You give a party, and someone is killed at the party, you don't continue the party." The great hallmark of the Olympics - supposedly - is that it is a family where ethnic or national backgrounds are set aside; it is the taking part that is important.

Not long after, I visited Montreal, the venue for the next Olympics. I remember thinking that, had the terrible events at Munich happened in ancient times, the competition would have speedily disappeared. As it was, the black ribbon on the Israeli flag as the team joined the opening ceremony in 1976 was a poignant reminder of the tragedy that had unfolded four years earlier.

The Olympics have survived, though not without their controversies, including the debate on whether to commemorate the atrocities during the Opening Ceremony. As a lawyer I have learnt to be objective and unemotional when watching terrible events and reading chilling reports but I sometimes have flashbacks to Munich.

It was a generation ago and, as the Olympians celebrated their successes this summer, I wondered whether the world really remembers the sacrifice made to the ideals of the movement by those Israeli athletes 40 years ago.

Regrets, yes, but no complaints for Pádraig

Simon Lewis

Thomas Bjorn ranted when he was ignored as a wild card option six years and Paul Casey was almost reduced to tears. That's how much it means to be almost named to a European Ryder Cup team.

Pádraig Harrington will be just as disappointed to miss out this time around having been overlooked on Monday by Jose Maria Olazabal for next month's edition against the United States but it is a measure of the man and a vindication of his stature in the game that he took the news on the chin and wished his fellow Europeans well at Medinah Country Club near Chicago.

Bjorn had ranted when being ignored by Ian Woosnam for the K Club matches in 2006, becoming so enraged on the corresponding announcement weekend at Gleneagles that his expressions of “devastation” earned him a rebuke from the European Tour and forced him into sackcloth and ashes with a public apology the following day. Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood had earned Woosnam's selections and went on to justify them over that emotional weekend in Kildare.

Bjorn's behaviour did not prevent him from becoming a vice captain to Colin Montgomerie alongside Clarke and Paul McGinley two years ago at Celtic Manor, when Monty chose Harrington, Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari for his three wild cards at the expense, chiefly, of Casey and Justin Rose.

Montgomerie named his picks straight after the final round at Gleneagles while Casey was playing his final round at The Barclays on the PGA Tour in America with the Englishman happening to be paired with Harrington. It was inadvertently through the Irishman's wife Caroline, that Casey learned of the decision as he explained after his round as he fought back those tears of disappointment.

“I've not really officially heard and I haven't looked yet to see if I have a text or voice message, but I saw Caroline gave (Harrington's caddie) Ronan (Flood) the thumbs up on the seventh hole and then it went fairly quiet,” Casey said. “I figured that was it. Caroline's a great friend - she would have said something to me if I had been picked, so at that point I kind of knew that I hadn't.”

Like Harrington yesterday, Casey showed no ill will towards the captain for his omission and in truth there can be no reason to for if a player cannot qualify automatically for a Ryder Cup team he really has left it in the lap of the gods as to his participation.

Olazabal's decision to take Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts as his two wild cards was an easy decision for Spain's European captain to make. Harrington had a decent shout, too, but the three-time major winner had been acutely aware since Olazabal's press conference at the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island that he would not be on the plane to Chicago for the September 28-30 defence of the trophy regained by Monty's heroes at Celtic Manor.

Olazabal had cited Harrington's putting problems as his major area of concern and it was telling on Monday when extolling the strengths of both Poulter and Colsaerts that the pair's work with the flat stick had been major factors in their selections.

Referring to the Belgian's length off the tee and the asset that will bring on a beefed up Medinah course measuring 7658 yards, Olazabal said: “Length can be a factor, but obviously at the end of the day, we have all known that, you know, the most important thing is how many putts you make.”

Harrington, despite his strong showing in all four majors this year, had simply not made enough to show the captain he was worth a spot on the team.

Of that he could have no complaint.

Judge: Corrie endangered herself

The parents of Rachel Corrie are planning to appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court following the ruling of the Haifa District Court that the death of their 23-year-old daughter in 2003 was an accident.

In a long and detailed verdict that summed up two-and-a-half years of a legal suit brought by the Corrie family against the Israeli state, Judge Oded Gershon wrote: “The deceased had put herself in a dangerous situation.

The death was caused by an accident that the deceased brought upon herself, despite all the attempts of the IDF force to distance her and her friends from the place”.

This ruling is the latest twist in the nine-year saga following the death of the American activist, a member of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement (ISM), who was trying to block IDF bulldozers near Rafah, close to the Egyptian border.

Corrie’s family and friends have contended that she was protesting against house demolitions, illegal according to international law, and that there was no way that the bulldozer operator could not have seen her before she was crushed to death.

The judge, however, accepted the IDF version of events, writing in his ruling that “it was a scene of daily war, meaning daily sniper shooting, firing of missiles, explosions of devices against IDF forces. Only combat soldiers were fighting in the area.” He also noted that, at the time, civilians were forbidden from entering the area and that a US State Department travel advisory warning its citizens from visiting the Gaza Strip was in place.

Corrie’s mother, Cindy, responded to the ruling saying: “This was a bad day, not only for our family, but for human-rights, humanity, the rule of law and also for the country of Israel.” Her sister, Sarah, said: “I believe without doubt that my sister was seen as the driver approached her.” The family’s lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein, confirmed that they would continue fighting the case and would appeal to the Supreme Court.

The US State Department has said in the past that it does not believe the military investigation carried out by the IDF in the wake of Corrie’s death was sufficiently thorough or transparent. This position was reiterated last week by Dan Shapiro, the US ambassador to Israel, in a meeting with the Corrie family.

Following the ruling, the State Department did not express an opinion. A spokeswoman merely said: “We understand the family’s disappointment with the outcome of the trial”, adding that they would continue to support them in an appeal.

ISM responded with a statement saying that “the verdict is a green light for Israeli soldiers to use lethal force against human rights defenders and puts Palestinian and International human rights defenders in mortal danger”.

Seth Cohen, still the same after all these Chismukkahs

If someone (me?) was ever to rank television's greatest Jewish characters, my vote might go Seth Cohen, the geeky, Jew-fro-sporting, wisecrack-making son of Kirsten and Sandy in the pop culture phenomenon that was The OC.

Josh Schwartz's drama series might have centred on the lives of the rich and fabulous in Southern California, but at the heart of the affair was an idealistic Jewish lawyer from the Bronx and his son.

Adam Brody, the actor who brought Seth to life for four seasons, has been out of the spotlight since the series wrapped. But according to New York Magazine, he's back. In an interview with him this week, there was a gem that could have come from the mouth of Seth himself.

His latest film is set on America's East Coast. How did a San Diego-born actor cope with that?

"You know, I just don’t say 'dude' and I don’t say 'you know' and it sort of takes care of itself. My parents are from Detroit, which I guess is the Midwest. They’re Jews...It gives you an East Coast feel. You get a little more neurosis, perhaps."

Spoken like the true inventor of Chrismukkah.

At least the Ecoli is gone

Eoghan Deasy

There was some decent surf around the country this week, especially in the earlier part of it. However there were outbreaks of Ecoli in the Cork area, which thankfully have cleared up, but just in time for the surf to clear up too. It should be slightly better in Donegal, which could be a sign for the football match on Sunday.

Weather outlook
A dull start to Saturday with scattered outbreaks of rain in many areas, but brighter weather, with scattered showers will extend from the west during the morning and early afternoon. A few of the showers could be heavy, with a slight risk of thunder, especially in the south. Rather cool and fresh, with moderate north to northwest winds. Maximum temperatures 16 to19 degrees Celsius. Apart from a little showery rain near the south coast at first, Saturday night will be dry, cool and mostly clear; with little or no wind, some fog patches may form inland. Sunday will be a mainly dry day, with variable cloud and some sunshine; however, the southwest and west may have some light rain, especially late in the day. Rain will gather in much of Munster and Connacht overnight into Monday, and southeasterly winds will strengthen at the same time.

North
Saturday:
Two to three foot with 10-second period in the morning and moderate onshore breeze.
Sunday: One to two foot with eight-second period and cross-shore breeze, turning offshore hopefully in the afternoon.
North West
Saturday: One to two foot with seven-second period and light cross-shore breezes, not great really.
Sunday: Similar conditions to Saturday with lighter winds.

West
Saturday:
Two to three foot of westerly swell with seven-second period and moderate onshores all day!
Sunday: One to two foot with eight-second period and light offshore breeze.

South and South West
Saturday:
Westerly swell hitting Kerry at the weekend, with two to three foot and nine-second period, but moderate onshores will mess things up. Smaller conditions in Cork, with onshore winds making things awkward again.
Sunday: Sunday will see similar conditions in Kerry but winds should swing cross-shore in Cork in the morning so get on it if you can.

South East
Saturday:
Two foot with an eight-second swell Saturday, with offshore winds hopefully making things fun!
Sunday: Very little happening Sunday!

Michigan student claims staple attack was antisemitic

A student at Michigan State University woke up to find a staple attached to his gums after what he claimed was an antisemitic attack.

Second-year journalism student Zachary Tennen was assaulted at a party in the early hours of Sunday morning, allegedly after replying in the affirmative when asked if he was Jewish.

The 19-year-old had his jaw broken, was knocked unconscious and came round to find a staple protruding through his gums.

However, police in Michigan said there was not enough evidence to label the attack a hate crime.

While the Detroit Free Press quoted Mr Tennen’s mother saying that the attackers raised their arms in a Nazi salute and chanted “Heil Hitler”, police say that two witnesses cannot confirm the claims.

Michigan State University released a statement saying: “Michigan State University has reached out to the family of the student to provide the academic and other support the student needs.”

Mr Tennen has since undergone corrective surgery on his jaw.
