Two Columbus Clippers pitchers combine on shutout: Minor League Report

The Akron Aeros also get a victory on Thursday, topping New Britain, Conn., in 12 innings.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 4, Braves 0 Right-handed starter Corey Kluber (5-6, 3.73) and righty Dan Wheeler (2.13) combined on a six-hit shutout, as Columbus beat Gwinnett on Thursday in an International League game in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Kluber allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five in seven innings. Wheeler gave up two hits and struck out one. 1B Russ Canzler (.256) put up four runs in the sixth inning with a grand slam, his fourth homer of the season. 

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 3, Rock Cats 2 (12) C Roberto Perez (.224) singled in RF Ben Copeland (.194) in the top of the 12th inning to lead Akron to the Eastern League win in New Britain, Conn. Copeland singled with one out, stole second and scored on Perez’s hit to center field.

Right-hander Kyle Landis (4-1, 1.85) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. 

Advanced A Carolina Mudcats

Red Sox 4, Mudcats 3 Host Salem (Va.) knocked around Carolina starter Francisco Jimenez (5-5, 3.96) and held on to win the Carolina League game. Jimenez, a left-hander, gave up four runs on six hits in five innings.

1B Jesus Aguilar (.288) led the Mudcats’ offense with two hits, including his 15th double of the season. 

A Lake County Captains

Silver Hawks 9, Captains 7 (13) Lake County RF Jordan Smith (.297) had four hits and 1B Jerrud Sabourin (.290) had three hits and two RBI, but the Captains lost the Midwest League game to visiting South Bend (Ind.)

The Captains sent the game to extra innings with three runs in the ninth. The tying run came in on a wild-pitch third strike to CF Luigi Rodriguez (.278) with two outs. Rodriguez reached first as pinch-runner Nick Bartolone scored from third. 

Independent Lake Erie Crushers

Crushers 5, Beach Bums 3 Lake Erie rallied to beat host Traverse City (Mich.) in Frontier League action. The Crushers have won four in a row. 
