Peer to play Sharapova

Israel's Shahar Peer has been handed a daunting first-round draw against former Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova at the Olympic Games.

Peer, Israel's only representative in the singles competition, will be determined to give an improved showing after losing in the opening round of the grand slam event earlier this month, but she will give away a big height advantage against the competition's third seed from Russia, a player she has never beaten.

Peer recently told the JC: "Grass isn't my favourite surface, but I'll give it my best shot at the Olympics."
