Follow Yeo rappers' tractor track all the way to Glastonbury gates

Young farmers can follow in the steps of the Yeo Valley rappers and become the dairy firm's new Tractor Factor winner.

The yoghurt makers hope to replicate the success of its world-famous advert – viewed 1.9 million times on the firm's "Yeotube" YouTube channel – and give Glastonbury Festival tickets to the winners.

Anyone who lives and works in the countryside can send in short films or audio recordings of them singing their own choice of chart song or something they wrote themselves.

Tim Mead, Yeo Valley's managing director, said: "The rap advert received an unprecedented response from a relatively small burst of TV exposure.

"Its popularity online, and the number of spoof videos that have been uploaded showed there is a great deal of untapped talent out there, so we're looking to unleash this creative potential and who knows, maybe even find the next big music stars with our Tractor Factor competition."

He will judge the top three videos alongside competition partner Farmers Guardian magazine and Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis.

The final three will go to a public vote and the Tractor Factor winner will get four tickets to this year's festival and perform their song on the Yeo Valley stage.

Entrants have until March 31 to come up with a song idea, record it and upload it to the Tractor Factor YouTube channel, with full details available at www.farmersguard ian.com/tractorfactor.

Jewish football? It's fair play

As a woman, one of the things I always appreciate when I go to football matches is how short the queues are for the toilets. A football stadium at half time is probably one of the only places in the world where the men have to wait for longer.

Obviously, it?s because football supporters remain more likely to be men than women. But that?s not to say women don?t like football; plenty do, and there?s no reason they shouldn?t. It would be sexist, horribly chauvinistic, to suggest women had no place to watch football.

But what if I wanted to play football? I could, in any number of arenas, but as a woman, could I play for an all-male football team? I don't mean physically - this is no time to make judgments about my poor coordination or my understanding of the offside rule (Salt shaker? Pepper pot?) - but would I be allowed? And should I be?

Of course not. Otherwise, it wouldn?t be a male football team, it would just be a football team. Which there?s nothing wrong with, if people want it. But if, in its essence, the team is for men to play in, then it has to be limited accordingly. That?s not discrimination, that?s just logic.

It would be discrimination to say that because of who they are they can?t play the sport at all. It would be discrimination to, for example, ban women from the stands, or force them to sit in a different area, or charge them different prices for the refreshments at half time.

Now that the story of the great MSFL football identity scandal has made it into the mainstream media ? The Times, the Mirror, the Metro and the Evening Standard amongst others ? it?s generated a fair amount of outraged comment around the web.

Under the Daily Mail?s story, one person wrote: ?How can this be allowed to happen in Britain today??. Another described it as ?unsportsmanlike to segregate people on a religious basis?. The cheerful pundits on the Evening Standard story accused the league of being racist and referred to the ?double standards of 'anti-racism'.?

So, was the Brownie group I went to ? all-Jewish ? also racist? What about the Jewish summer camps I attended or, for that matter, the Jewish Society I was involved with at university? Were they really, truly, examples of segregation? Of course not.

Religion isn?t only about worship. Just as gender is more than a label ? men and women are different, if none other than in the physical sense ? religion feeds into the social and lifestyle side of things; what we eat, how we celebrate our new year, where we choose to live, and yes, even the way in which our leisure activities are organised.

It?s not called discrimination. It?s called being part of a community.

AM unveiling thermometer to help public chose well when ill

A CAMPAIGN to help Welsh patients choose the best place to get treatment if they fall ill was being launched today by Gower AM Edwina Hart.

The Assembly Health Minister was unveiling the Choose Well campaign aimed at boosting public awareness of available NHS services.

It comes in the light of evidence which shows a significant number of people still call 999, or visit hospital accident and emergency departments, when there are other services more convenient and suitable for their needs.

She said: "By giving people choice and helping them to understand the range of support available, the Choose Well campaign will help members of the public to understand how they can help themselves and the NHS by choosing the most appropriate service if they fall ill."

Staff from across the NHS including GPs, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and consultants are to be encouraged to promote the Choose Well campaign, which will be supported by radio, internet and bus shelter advertising. Leaflets and posters have been produced by some health boards.

The campaign uses a colour- coded thermometer to help people to link their symptoms with a particular NHS service which is right for their need.

Tony Jewell, Chief Medical Officer for Wales, said: "When asked, people gave us a very strong message that they were not really aware of all of the services that existed, or how they should be used.

"We are hoping that this campaign is going to prove useful in helping people towards accessing the right services at the right time to meet their healthcare needs.

"Helping people make the right choice in accessing services will not only benefit patients themselves but also assist our doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to maintain high quality services.

"We want to make sure people living in Wales get the right care in the right place at the right time."

Over my dead body!

It is almost an Israeli tradition that a candidate nominated by the Prime Minister, whichever Prime Minister, for an ambassadorship, will be vetoed by the Foreign Minister, and vice versa. Normally, in Britain say, these proposed appointments would not become public knowledge until final confirmation and whatever the internal argy bargy it would not emerge to embarrass the candidates. But not in Israel where it has long been said with truth that this vessel of state leaks from the top. Every politician has his favourite journalist and you will have to take my word for it that it is not unusual for ministers, fresh out of a cabinet meeting, to phone a media friend and brief him on what ministers had discussed, even including matters of a supposed ?confidential? nature. It does little for Israel's international standing when her Foreign Minister, told of his Prime Minister's choice for the London embassy, proclaims to all and sundry: ?Over my dead body.?

NCAA Basketball: Who deserves number one? Poll

No. 1 Duke lost, Ohio State won but so did Kansas. So who's number one?

jimmer.jpgJimmer Fredette

Since Virginia Tech upset No. 1 Duke last weekend, it looks like college basketball will have new number one. But which school desrves the top spot?

Is it No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Kansas or No. 7 BYU? BYU had an impressive victory at No. 6 San Diego State, but will that be enough to leap from the Buckeyes and Kansas?

Was Saturday's club classic one for the ages?

Chatting were: Michael Moynihan, John Fogarty, Diarmuid O’Flynn and Fintan O’Toole.
Under Discussion: Round 2 of the Allianz Hurling League.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN, Irish Examiner sportswriter:  We might as well start with Saturday and De La Salle-Clarinbridge. The greatest club game of all time?

FINTAN O'TOOLE, Irish Examiner sportswriter: Yeah, for me it's the best club game of all time. I know it's easy to hype up high-scoring matches, but the quality of the scoretaking was exceptional and you couldn't have asked for more dramatic finales to both normal time and extra-time

JOHN FOGARTY, Irish Examiner GAA correspondent: Saturday's game had it all. Clarinbridge rise from the ashes twice, poor John Mullane denied . . .  each side knew they could win it, unlike previous years when club teams went out hoping against hope.

FINTAN O'TOOLE:  Of course, it's all subjective and nobody can be authoritative on the debate. But in the lifetime of the All-Ireland club SHC, I can't think of a better game.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN, Irish Examiner hurling writer:  Would go with you on that one, Fintan.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN: Will Clarinbridge beat O'Loughlin Gaels?

DIARMUID O'FLYNN:  Gaels are tough, very solid defensively, Brian Hogan a commanding figure - they'll earn it, that's for sure.

JOHN FOGARTY: O'Loughlin Gaels had their own battle against Ballyboden before Christmas but this will have Clarinbridge's confidence soaring.

FINTAN O'TOOLE:  Great mix to the Clarinbridge team. The older heads like the Kerins brothers and David Forde are obvious standouts, but I was really impressed with Eoin Forde and Barry Daly.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Tony Considine was raving about young Forde, reckons he's one to watch - is he related to David?

FINTAN O'TOOLE: Both were part of the Galway U21 team that were destroyed last September by Tipperary, they fared much better on this occasion in Semple Stadium. I think Eoin is a cousin - he got a few runouts with the Galway seniors in 2009, when he was just out of minor, didn't feature in 2010 but should come into the frame this season.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: The way Galway are going in the league, they mightn't need him!

JOHN FOGARTY: Galway have had the easiest start to the league all the same.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN:  Granted, but they’ve still impressed.

FINTAN O'TOOLE: That was a heavy beating they handed out to Offaly yesterday but Cathal Parlon's dismissal and the chronic injury list Joe Dooley has to contend with were mitigating factors.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Well, we'll know more about them after their visit to the Park next Sunday, we’ll know more about Cork also.

FINTAN O'TOOLE: The win did come at a cost for John McIntyre, both Ger Mahon and Tony Og Regan came off with injuries. Iarla Tannian seems to have been really impressive.

JOHN FOGARTY: Interesting to see Ger Farragher back in the forwards. He started like a man on a mission last year when he was in midfield. A real confidence player, while Tannian has been promising to set the world alight for some time now.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN: At least Wexford rallied yesterday against Waterford to some extent. Is there any light at the end of that tunnel?

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Keith Rossiter did promise a Wexford bounce-back, now that the senior players are back in the fold - the Oulart lads, especially.

JOHN FOGARTY: It was all about pride for Wexford yesterday. Plenty of that in them but they're going to have a real fight on their hands to hold onto the Division 1 status they won back last season after two years of trying.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Good to get three tight games in the league at the weekend though, and decent crowds also.  Nowlan Park was hopping yesterday, nearly 6,000 but looked and sounded like more.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN: Cork and Kilkenny was competitive yesterday, but two points in one half isn't very encouraging for Denis Walsh.

FINTAN O'TOOLE: A mixed bag of a performance for Cork. The fight they showed in the second-half revival will give them heart going forward but the scoring difficulties up front remain on the evidence of the first-half.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Tipp showed the way to beat Kilkenny last year, pace and skill, are now the benchmark; Cork should have learned from that but went back to the twin tower experiment, Cronin for Aisake, failed again.  Hopefully Denis has now learned the right lesson - the guys who finished are close to what should be Cork's starting team.

JOHN FOGARTY: If Pat Horgan is kept quiet, what do Cork have? We saw how Waterford - or rather Noel Connors - took him out of it in the Munster finals last year and look what happened.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: The Cork management has to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and play the best players in the best positions; Curran at 6 or nowhere, Tom and Jerry in midfield, two McCarthys in the half-forward line, with Lehane, leave Paudie and Patrick to grow up front, Ben with a license to roam.

JOHN FOGARTY: Ben with a licence to roam from corner-forward, Diarmuid? That's what I'd like to see.

FINTAN O'TOOLE: Is Conor Lehane going to be a viable option for the Munster championship, though? He's doing his Leaving Cert a week after the Tipperary game. I think there's too much being expected of him.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Richie Hogan was outstanding for Kilkenny yesterday, but we all missed the three catches for the second-last point!  He came of age yesterday. TJ Reid also looked hungry when he came on.  Add Henry Shefflin, Richie Power, Eoin Larkin, Brian Hogan, Martin Comerford et al, to that mix...
Noel McGrath starred for Tipp at a similar age to Conor Lehane, in similar conditions!

JOHN FOGARTY: Lehane was the real stand-out guy for Cork in the Waterford Crystal final. Good point about the Leaving Cert but still an option.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: What was the point of playing him through the Waterford Crystal, if not to blood him for bigger things this year? He's ready.

FINTAN O'TOOLE: He's definitely going to feature as the season progresses, it's just that May 29th clash in Semple Stadium. where he could be a doubt for.

JOHN FOGARTY: The fact is Cork need finishers.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN:  Okay, talking of Semple Stadium . . . Dublin-Tipperary in Croke Park. Keaney scoring too much? Tipperary celebrating too much?

FINTAN O'TOOLE: Big win for Dublin. Given their bright start along with the travails of Wexford and Offaly, it looks like they've preserved their Division 1 status already.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN:  Keaney was truly outstanding, but ten points from placed balls, most of those earned by others - Dotsie fouled for at least three of them.  So no, Conal contributing but so are those around him.  A great find though, not just for Dublin but for hurling generally - we need more marquee names.  Tipp, though, were very close, and still have Lar, Noel and John O'Brien to return up front. They're getting there, much improved over the full 70 from last week.

JOHN FOGARTY:  Tipperary are conceding too many frees, a common factor in the defeats to Kilkenny and Dublin. They'll come good.  Eoin Kelly came off the bench on Saturday just eight days after his wedding. His wife might think otherwise but that's leadership right there!

FINTAN O'TOOLE:  Dublin should be set up better in attack this year with Keaney, Rushe and Ryan O'Dwyer the ball winning forwards, allowing McCrabbe and David O'Callaghan to concentrate as being the finishers.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Fintan, when you put it like that, isn't Leinster going to be interesting this year?

JOHN FOGARTY:  Was talking about Keaney with a friend yesterday evening and he made an interesting point - does Keaney now regret not having made the switch back to hurling earlier? I know it's still early days but it's almost as if he never left.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN:  Definitely, John - imagine where he'd be now?

FINTAN O'TOOLE: John O'Neill looked sharp on Saturday night for Tipperary, he’s recovered well from his long-term injury. Pa Bourke has also impressed over the last two weekends.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Johnno and Pa will rattle that Tipp starting 15.

JOHN FOGARTY:  They’ll compete for championship places. Aside from possibly pushing Padraic Maher into a more central position, can't see much happening to the defence.

FINTAN O'TOOLE:  David Young will probably fill Declan Fanning's place, but otherwise the same rearguard, I imagine, for Tipperary.

MICHAEL MOYNIHAN: Declan Ryan doesn't have the goodwill to draw on that Liam Sheedy would have had after two league defeats. Is he under pressure?

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: I wouldn't say Declan is under pressure yet, but he's not entirely comfortable either, and shouldn't be.

JOHN FOGARTY: He’s been handed a stick to slap his players with. They'll know themselves what has to be done and the word is training has been hard going (what inter-county hurling session isn't right now?) but performances should improve as league develops and cobwebs are blown.

DIARMUID O'FLYNN: Before we finish with the league, I think we should mention Clare - great win in Antrim - and Limerick, still on course.  All heating up nicely.
And Waterford of course, three points from four also in the top division.

JOHN FOGARTY: Tipperary v Waterford on Saturday week will be a good one. The two Eoin Kellys will be back. It was an exciting draw in Thurles last year and should be just as tight again this time round.

FINTAN O'TOOLE:  Fine win for Carlow away to Laois yesterday as well. Paudie Kehoe is posting good scoring totals for them.

Give the girl a break

Spot the difference.

Sky Sports hauls Richard Keys and Andy Gray off its Monday Night Football programme following inappropriate comments towards a female assistant referee.

Meanwhile, a week after making inappropriate comments towards TV and radio presenter Vanessa Feltz, Ally Ross is at it again, albeit a less offensive remark this time.

The Sun columnist is doing himself no favours. Does he have a personal gripe with Vanessa? I have to ask.

Do The Sun care? Evidently not.

C?mon Ally. Leave the girl alone.

Love of 'mysterious' caving

What do you do for a living? I am a caving instructor and caving equipment retailer for Cave Climb, the business my wife Rachel and I run in Cheddar. We are the most comprehensive service to cavers in the UK. The business covers equipment hire and sales along with introductory caving sessions and advanced tours. I also do training and consultancy.

How long have you been a caving instructor? I've been an instructor for 27 years. I had my first experience of caving as a schoolboy in 1971 when we explored Goatchurch Cavern in the Mendips. After that I was hooked.

What is the appeal of caving? It is the most fascinating, mysterious, beautiful and challenging environment in which you can forge lifelong friendships – and marriages. My wife Rachel is also a caving instructor.

What does a typical day involve? A typical day might involve meeting a group of new cavers at Burrington Combe and taking them to Goatchurch Cavern, my favourite beginners' cave, where I'd give them an introduction to the basic techniques of sliding, scrambling and crawling around a cave. They can experience a bit of a squeeze if they're feeling adventurous. After lunch we'd head off to Swildon's Hole at Priddy to see the power of water in action underground.

Have you always been in this business? No. Fifteen years ago I taught myself to design websites and constructed sites for garage owners who needed to show photos of their cars. Before that I was a darkroom technician in a print works. I have also been possibly the world's worst shop-fitter. I am also a film maker and published author.

Where do you live? We live on Redcliffe Street at the quiet end of Cheddar. I love the fact that we are just a few minutes' walk from the Gorge.

Is there anything you dislike? Cheddar must be the most pedestrian-unfriendly village in the region. The lack of provision for pedestrians here and in the Gorge is appalling. I don't understand why people put up with it.

What do you do in your free time? Our favourite thing at the moment is to do the Via Ferrata in France. This involves climbing with a cable and fixed rungs, which means you can experience the thrill of climbing to immense heights in complete safety. My other hobby is cave digging with the Cheddar Caving Club. We have managed to dig into and explore a 60-metre passage between two caves at Burrington Combe.

Which three Somerset places or events would you recommend to visitors? The event would be Glastonbury Festival; Cheddar Gorge and The Hunter's Lodge at Priddy would be the places.

What are your three favourite places in the world? Cheddar Gorge, Utah and the Alps.

What part of the world would you most like to visit? I'd like to visit Sarawak to see the biggest caves in the world.

What person do you most admire? My wife, Rachel, for putting up with me.

What is your greatest strength and weakness? I am impulsive, which covers both.

When are you happiest? Pulling on my ski boots on the morning of the first day of a week's skiing holiday. Skiing is the perfect compromise between leisure and activity.

If you won the Lottery how would you spend the money? It would be nice to have a second house in the Alps.

True or False? Andy got married in a cave.

See next week's paper to find out whether this is fact or fiction.

In last week's True or False? John Yeo claimed to have been arrested three times, which is false. John has only been arrested twice: the first for photographing a steam locomotive in India; the second was for busking without a permit in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA.

Businessman braves cold in hunt for work

wdnews@bepp.co.uk

The former boss of a 1million-a-year business who was left jobless because of the credit crunch is so desperate for work he stands at the roadside clutching a placard pleading for an interview – for 11 hours a day.

Desperate Michael Adlington, 51, ran a successful care company in Bristol employing 124 people which he built from scratch using a computer in his bedroom in 1999.

But a combination of splitting with his wife and the economic downturn meant he was forced to sell the company which had an annual turnover of 1.2 million in 2007.

Michael, who now lives in rented accommodation after he was forced to sell his home, has applied for 45 jobs since November without getting a single interview. He is now standing on a busy roundabout in his new home town of Newton Abbot, Devon, from around 7am to 6pm every day pleading for a job and handing out CVs.

The smartly dressed father-of-two, who makes a point of wearing suit, shoes and tie, clutches a giant board which reads: "Former company director requires employment now. Determined, resilient, reliable, talented... Anything considered."

He said: "I get here first thing so I catch the commuter rush and go home when I can't bear the cold anymore, but make sure I get the commuters coming home.

"Then when I get home I spend my evenings on the internet looking for and applying jobs. I believe you have to have a really positive attitude and go out there and get a job, not by sitting behind a computer screen."

Michael founded and was director of Capable Care Ltd in Bristol, which he set up in his bedroom in 1999 using just one computer.

He built it up until he employed 124 people providing home help and earned a 1.2million annual turnover.

But he was forced to sell the business for an undisclosed sum in 2007 after the credit crunch left the business ailing and struggling to turn a profit.

Michael split with his wife shortly afterwards and was consequently forced to sell the family home in Bristol, where his business was based.

He moved to Devon to start a life and has applied for 45 jobs in the last number of weeks but has not been invited for a single interview.

But rather than "mope around", he took a pro-active approach and appealed to potential employers to give him a chance.

Michael said he would prefer to get a management job but was prepared to consider any work with a steady wage.

He added: ''I think people will see I am actually out there trying to get a job. I am confident, enthusiastic and driven.

''Everything is about action. If you don't take action, how can you expect to get anything back. I'm coming back into work and trying to get a job but it is extremely difficult.

''I had a read about the huge unemployment figures in Britain at the minute, but I didn't realise quite how difficult it would be.''

Michael started standing at the roadside on Monday and has vowed to continue for "as long as it takes".

Before setting up his company in 1999, Michael was an assistant finance manager for Provident PLC and in his younger days worked as a HGV driver, a plumber and was a sergeant in the Territorial Army, where he served for eight years.

Pupils given tips of trade

MORE than 1,500 pupils from Carmarthenshire have tried their hand at a range of trades from plumbing to hairdressing at a careers fair held at Parc y Scarlets.

Careers Wales West partnered up with Carmarthenshire Council to host the event which saw secondary schools from across Llanelli take part. Local employers, colleges and training providers were on hand to guide the pupils with their career choices, including the British Army, Coleg Sir Gr, Media M4C, Llanelli Rural Council and Hywel Dda NHS.

Pupils were given invaluable insight into a mixture of job roles and had the opportunity to research a variety of careers.

Marc Jones, from Coleg Sir Gr's catering course, said: "This event was an excellent way to demonstrate the many careers available to young people once they leave school. We have been able to do some cooking demonstrations to show what it's like to be a chef and also explain to pupils the route into catering."

One rule for Cycling's elite, another for everyone else.

Brian Canty

Jessica Hardy, Adam Seroczynski, Callum Priestley, Tong Wen, Alessandro Colo. Five names you’re unlikely to have heard in the past. Alberto Contador. The face of cycling, the biggest name in the sport, the reigning Tour de France champion. Yes, you know the guy.

They all tested positive for clenbuterol-an anabolic agent proven to lower body fat percentage while increasing aerobic capacity. All were subsequently banned for varying lengths of time. Contador, however, was exonerated from his charge and is now back in the saddle.

The decision to clear the three-time Tour de France champion is, on the face of it, an absolute disgrace.

The strict liability rule in the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) code means that it doesn't matter how a banned substance gets into an athlete's body, its presence there is enough to warrant a punishment. Otherwise what is the point of having such a rule?

Jessica Hardy, Adam Seroczynski, Callum Priestley, Tong Wen, Alessandro Colo all committed the same crime as Contador; the difference is, their cases weren’t near as high profile. Chances are, they couldn’t afford the legal rigmarole that has accustomed the Contador entourage ever since he shot to fame in the mid noughties.

In other words, is the only real difference between Contador and someone like Alessandro Colo, banned for a year after accidentally ingesting the substance, the money they were able to invest in their defence? The answer is most likely yes.

Of the above quintet, Colo is the only cyclist. You’re unlikely to hear of him winning Grand Tours or anything like that any time soon. The sport can do without Colo, the sport can’t do without Contador. In much the same way as Armstrong was the face of the sport for the best part of a decade, that torch has now been passed to Contador. How on earth can it be considered fair if two riders commit the same crime, but only one does the time?

The case surrounding Alberto Contador has set an extremely dangerous precedent to say the least. The UCI couldn’t show conclusively that the Spaniard deliberately took clenbuterol. Does that mean the same now applies when a rider tests positive for EPO-(a substance that has become synonymous with the much maligned sport)? Does the testing or judging authority now have to produce bags of blood from the athletes freezer with his fingerprints all over the cap, vial, and syringe, to prove that he doped?

Whatever the arguments over clenbuterol levels, the Contador acquittal underlines one glaringly obvious thing above all. National governing bodies should not be placed in a position where they have to rule on positive drug tests involving their star riders, any more than the world governing body. If the Cork County Board were put in charge of sanctioning its players after infringements on or off the field, what do you think the outcome would be? Complete and utter chaos. That’s cycling at the moment. It must change and until it does, the sport will not win its war on doping.

Between them, the UCI (International Cycling Union) and RFEC have taken six months to arrive at no ruling at all and it’s no surprise either. The last thing the Spanish federation want to do is take a step out of the sporting limelight when so many of its stars are achieving success on a global scale. Alonso, Nadal, Contador to name but a few. The UCI and/or WADA must appeal this decision to maintain any credibility in the fight against doping. They have 30 days to do so.

For the sake of the sport, let's hope they do.

Irish government routed at polls

Enda Kenny, leader of Fine Gael, poised to become Ireland's prime minister if he can broker a deal with second-placed Labour

Ireland's largest ruling party, Fianna Fail, has suffered a huge election defeat just months after accepting a EU/IMF bailout, leaving its traditional rival Fine Gael on course to lead the country, according to an exit poll.

Fine Gael's leader, Enda Kenny, is poised to become Ireland's new prime minister, but without an overall majority, the poll suggests. Kenny is most likely to look to the Labour party, which had its best-ever election results, to help form a new administration.

According to RTE, Fine Gael took 36.1% of the vote, with Labour coming second with 20.5%.

Fianna Fil support is put at just 15.1%, by far its worst general election result and will mean a massive loss of seats across the country. Sinn Fin support is put at 10.1%, again a record in the Irish Republic, while the Greens are on 2.7%, which could see the party save some seats despite predictions they would be wiped out.

Independents and others got 15.5% of the vote ? a high figure thought to be spread quite thinly given the number of candidates. Where those votes transfer could be crucial to the final outcome of counts across 43 constituencies.

The last RTE exit poll in 2007 proved to be 99% accurate when compared to the actual number of votes cast.

The Independents combined have pushed Fianna Fail into fourth place ? the party's worst performance since Eamon De Valera founded the party in the 1920s. In Dublin, Fianna Fail support barely hit 8%.

After 15 hours of polling, it appears that far more people voted in this election than in the previous one in 2007. Indications when polls closed at 10pm on Friday were that turnout was generally up, suggesting the national figure may comfortably break the 67% recorded four years ago. In Enda Kenny's Mayo constituency more than 75% of voters turned out to vote.

The chairman of the Dil, Seamus Kirk, is returned automatically, and is the only person sure of being a member of the 31st Dil.

Coach Byron Scott welcomes new guard Baron Davis: Cleveland Cavaliers Insider

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott welcomes new point guard Baron Davis to Cleveland with a phone call on Thursday night.

baron davis byron scott.JPGView full sizeByron Scott, left, and Baron Davis had a rough relationship while together in New Orleans, but they say things are good now as they get ready to reunite with the Cavaliers.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Although newcomer Baron Davis isn't expected to arrive in Cleveland until today, Cavaliers coach Byron Scott welcomed him during a phone call Thursday night.

"My first thing I said to him was, 'Baron, this is coach, and I'm very excited,' " Scott said Friday. 'I don't know how you feel right now, and I don't know how you are right now, just because of the fact when you get traded, it does take a day or two to get your thoughts together and realize what's going on.' . . . I understood that he had some thoughts, might have been disappointed."

Scott said as he filled in Davis about the city and the organization -- and the leadership role he expects the veteran point guard to take -- he got the impression all would be well once Davis reports.

"At the end of the conversation, we were laughing about the fact that people say we can't stand each other, and we were laughing about the fact that he was so disappointed," Scott said. "He said, 'Coach, really, I'm looking forward to it. L.A.'s home, and when the season's over, I'll be back home. But right now I'm looking forward to a change.' "

Davis, obtained along with a No. 1 draft choice in the trade that sent Mo Williams and Jamario Moon to the Clippers on Thursday, also posted the following message on his Facebook page:

"First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the fans in LA and all of Clipper Nation. Not many guys get the chance to play at home in front of their family and friends the way I have been able to the past couple seasons, and I am grateful for that opportunity. My former teammates will always be my family, and I wish them and the organization nothing but the best.

"I can't wait to join my new team, bring good energy and help us win games. I'm ready to call The Q home and bring some excitement!!! See you soon Ohio! The Beard is on its way! BD."

Still here: Anthony Parker seemed relieved the anxiety of his rumored trade was finally over, and he was not displeased with the outcome.

"I was kind of hoping I'd still be here," he said, adding that he'd be open to re-signing with the team when his contract expires this summer.

He admitted it was difficult when teammates and friends like Williams and Moon move on, but he's also excited about the possibilities of playing with Davis and rookies Semih Erden and Luke Harangody.

"Those are good additions," Parker said. "If you listen to a lot of the pundits, they say it was a good day for the Cavaliers."

Numbers game: Davis will wear No. 85, Harangody will wear No. 44 and Erden will wear No. 9 with the Cavs.

Davis has worn No. 1 or No. 5 as a pro, but those numbers are worn here by Daniel Gibson and Ryan Hollins, respectively. He wore No. 5 at UCLA. Harangody wore No. 44 at Notre Dame, but wore No. 55 in Boston. Erden wore No. 9 in Turkey, but No. 86 in Boston.

The last word: From Charles Barkley, on Williams and Moon being traded: "I've heard people say that Oklahoma City and the Knicks were the big winners [at the trade deadline]. The big winners are Mo Williams and Jamario Moon."

Turks give Maccabi boys a bit of a basting

Danny Berg, the Maccabi League Rep Team manager, told his troops to buck up their ideas after they were comprehensively beaten in their latest London Inter-League Cup match on Tuesday.

It was a night to forget for the Maccabi team who had looked so good in their opening when they beat the North London League 3-0.

It was an error-strewn performance from start to finish against opposition they, at times, made look out of this world.

The Turks led 3-0 at the interval and they added two more in the second half at Wingate & Finchley with Adrian (3), Kori and Daniel heaping misery on a Maccabi team who played the last 30 with 10 men due to injuries.

Berg said: "It was a night to forget. Our big players did not turn up and we did not compete."

All is not lost however, as Maccabi can still reach the final if they beat the Cypriot League next month.

Berg said: "I'll have several players available for the last game. They will definitely make a difference and we will give it our best shot."

Spinning the boycott

Anti-Israel campaigners relentlessly promoting their boycott of the country and its goods would have you believe they are landing success after success.

Don?t believe them.

This week Palestine Solidarity Campaigner Pamela Hardyment waxed lyrical about a supposed great victory over multinational waste management company Veolia (which many would have you believe is the next Great Satan after the United States).

It was revealed that Richmond Council had not renewed its street-cleaning contract with Veolia. The French firm, as regular readers will know, is involved in the Jerusalem light rail project which crosses parts of east Jerusalem.

Ms Hardyment claims:

?Our work is not finished but this is a victory nevertheless, the outcome is what was required and I have no doubt that raising the issue firmly [with the council] had something to do with the decision.?

Piffle.

A quick call to Richmond Council reveals that the decision was taken entirely for financial, rather than political, reasons.

Councillors in the south London borough awarded the new deal to a different company in order to save taxpayers no less than 200,000 a year.

Not only will the deal save money, Councillor Virginia Morris explained, but the new firm will even pick up litter after waste collections every week instead of just fortnightly.

So it would seem the real victors in all of this are the good people of Richmond, who will now have nice clean streets in return for paying their no doubt substantial council taxes.

As for the boycotters and Ms Hardyment ? they can pull the wool over their own eyes and pretend they are landing knock-out blows, but not everyone is so easily fooled.

Nick Hagadone making strides in fulfilling his pitching potential: Minor league report

Hard-throwing Hagadone, acquired from Boston in the Victor Martinez trade, has pitched more innings for Akron and Kinston this season than he did in his first three injury-plagued seasons combined.

nick-hagadone.jpgNick Hagadone pitching for Boston's minor league Greenville Drive team just before being traded to the Indians' organization in July, 2009.

FARM REPORT

AAA Columbus Clippers

Mud Hens 9, Clippers 1 Toledo's Scott Sizemore led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, and things didn't get any better for Clippers right-hander Paolo Espino (3-3, 5.62), who gave up eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of the International League game. DH Wes Hodges (.270) slugged his 15th homer for the Clippers' run. Toledo right-hander Thad Weber (2-1, 1.64) gave up Hodges home run, but only six hits and one walk in seven innings to get the win.

Notes: Right-handed reliever Zach Putnam (0-1, 3.47) has not allowed a run in his last 10 games, pitching 14 1/3 innings with 15 strikeouts, while allowing five hits and three walks....OF Jose Constanza (.320) is 15-of-41 (.366) with two doubles, two triples, seven runs and five walks in his last 10 games.

AA Akron Aeros

SeaWolves 1, Aeros 0 Erie right-handed starter Brooks Brown gave up just two Aeros' hits in six innings, and Brandon Jones doubled home the only run in the bottom of the fifth inning of the Eastern League game. Aeros righty starter Steven Wright (2-2, 4.31) took the loss, giving up five hits in five innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. Catcher Miguel Perez (.281) had two of Akron's four hits, including a double, but couldn't prevent the Aeros' fifth straight loss.

Notes: The Aeros, who won the Eastern League championship last season, finish their season tomorrow afternoon in Erie. Akron is 70-71.... LHP Nick Hagadone has pitched a combined 85 2/3 innings this season with the Aeros and Kinston. Hagadone, acquired from the Boston Red Sox organization in the Victor Martinez trade last July, had pitched a combined 79 1/3 innings in his three previous minor league seasons because of arm problems. He was selected by Boston with the 55th overall pick in the 2007 draft. Hagadone, 24, is considered one of the Indians' top pitching prospects. They have been careful with his arm this season, closely monitoring his pitch count in his 29 outings -- including 17 starts. Hagadone is a combined 3-5 with one save and a 3.57 ERA at Akron and Kinston. He has struck out 89 in the 85 2/3 innings and held batters to a .226 average, but has sometimes struggled with his control, walking 63....RH reliever Bryan Price (6-3, one save, 3.13) is 4-1 with one save and a 1.86 ERA since the end of June, striking out 30 and allowing 10 walks and just one homer in 34 innings.

Advanced A Kinston Indians
