Holding out for a heroine - our Bonnie honoured

IT was all Bonnie and no heartache at a ceremony to honour a chart-topping pop star.

Singer Bonnie Tyler was awarded the Freedom of Neath Port Talbot at a special ceremony held at Port Talbot's Princess Royal Theatre yesterday.

"It is anything but a heartache to be here," said Bonnie.

"Who would have ever thought that a simple girl from a simple family in Skewen would be honoured like this?"

The Grammy-nominated singer spoke about her childhood and how she become an international star.

"There was always music in the house," she said.

"My mother was an absolutely beautiful opera singer. It was inevitable that her children would become involved in the music business."

It was at a local talent competition at Skewen Rugby Club where she first got her first real taste of the stage — although her talent wasn't recognised straight away.

"I came second to an accordion player!" she laughed.

She then got her break as a singer with Bobby Wayne and the Dixies, and then with her own band Imagination, before getting a solo record deal.

"It has been a wonderful journey and I have been non-stop touring," she said.

Bonnie, who said she was "quite overcome", added it was a great honour to receive the freedom of the county.

"I am humbled and very grateful for this recognition and I am delighted to be able to follow in the footsteps of others," she said.

"I hope that in my own small way I can live up to this honour.

"I promise to be mindful of the trust you have placed in me and will continue to be a good ambassador for Neath and Port Talbot with my travels throughout the world."

Council leader Ali Thomas, who said he had worked with Bonnie's coal miner father, said: "Bonnie is only the second woman to be honoured. I am very pleased to support the resolution today."
