Jeanmar Gomez becomes 4-1 at Columbus with strong 8-inning outing: Minor league report

Gomez, who was with the Indians for parts of this season and 2010, is providing organizational pitching depth. Aeros' Tim Fedroff continues hot hitting in Akron win. Kinston and Lake County also winners.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 3, Bulls 2 Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (4-1, 3.16) went the distance for the win in the International League game at Columbus that was called after eight innings because of rain, denying Durham its ninth-inning at bat. Gomez struck out three, walked two and allowed seven hits. Clippers 2B Cord Phelps, who was 3-for-4, snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning when he drilled his second double of the game to score catcher Luke Carlin, who had singled. Carlin’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by 2B Jason Kipnis had given Columbus a 2-0 lead in the second inning. 3B Lonnie Chisenhall and SS Luis Valbuena each had two of the Clippers’ 11 hits.

Notes: Cord Phelps extended his hitting streak to eight games, during which he is 12-for-31 (.387) with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI....Right-handed relief pitcher Jensen Lewis, who spent parts of the last four seasons with the Indians, has been inconsistent. He has a 3-1 record with two saves and a 4.43 ERA in 15 games. Opponents are batting .329 against him, and he has struck out 10 and walked 14 in 20 1/3 innings.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 12, Senators 8 Aeros LF Tim Fedroff extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a double and triple, scored two runs, drove in one and finished the night with an Eastern League-leading .377 batting average. Catcher Chun Chen had three doubles and two RBI in five at bats during the game that included a lengthy rain delay at Akron's Canal Park. RF Matt McBride slugged a two-run homer and 2B Karexon Sanchez a solo clout: McBride’s eighth homer of the season; Sanchez’s fourth. Akron left-handed starter Kelvin De La Cruz (3-3, 3.54) got the win, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings, with six strikeouts and two walks.

Notes: The Eastern League’s Player of the Week for May 16-22, Tim Fedroff is 32-for-66 (.485) during his 17-game hitting streak, with 14 RBI and 13 runs....RH Paolo Espino got a win as a starter at Altoona on Saturday, holding the Curve to one run on three hits in five innings, with six strikeouts and no walks. Prior to that outing, Espino had made nine relief appearances with the Aeros, going 0-0 with one save and a 2.57 ERA in 28 innings, fanning 31 while allowing 22 hits and six walks.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Indians 5, Nationals 3 First baseman Jeremie Tice slugged his first home run of the season, a three-run clout, in the top of the first inning to spark the Indians to a Carolina League win in Potomac, Va. Tice also singled and scored, and SS Casey Frawley singled, walked twice and scored two runs. Kinston RH starter Toru Murata got a no-decision, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless, two-hit innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. LH reliever Francisco Jimenez (1-0, 6.14) got credit for the win despite yielding two runs in 1 2/3 innings. RH Preston Guilmet pitched a perfect ninth inning, with one strikeout, for his ninth save.

Notes: Preston Guilmet (0-0, nine saves) has not allowed a run in 15 games, spanning 16 2/3 innings, this season. He has allowed nine hits while fanning 16 and walking one....SS Casey Frawley is 10-for-35 (.286) with three home runs, nine RBI and 11 runs in his last 10 games.

A Lake County Captains

Captains 6, Dragons 3 RF Carlos Moncrief hit his fifth homer, a two-run clout, and doubled as the Captains won a Midwest League game in Dayton. 2B Argenis Martinez tripled and doubled, 1B Jesus Aguilar doubled and singled and SS Ronny Rodriguez singled twice for the Captains. RH starter Jordan Cooper pitched a scoreless inning but was relieved by RH Luis Encarnacion after a long rain delay. Encarnacion (1-1, 7.50) was credited with the win, yielding two runs (one earned) in three innings. RH Nathan Striz pitched the last five innings to get his first save, holding Dayton to one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Notes: Right-handed starter Michael Goodnight (3-3, 2.68) has held opponents to a .161 batting average (27-for-167). Not including his 1 2/3 innings when he took a loss at Lansing on May 8, batters are hitting .140 (22-for-157) against him....LH Michael Rayl is 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in eight starts. He has held opponents to a .174 batting average, and has struck out 44 against 10 walks in 41 1/3 innings.
