AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 6-1, Curve 1-2 RH starter Joe Gardner (3-2, 2.70) allowed one run on four hits and a walk, with five strikeouts, to get the win for Akron in the first of two seven-inning games in the Eastern League doubleheader at Canal Park. 2B Karexon Sanchez (.188) singled in two runs during the Aeros’ five-run first inning, and he slugged his third home run, a solo clout, in the sixth. Aeros’ RH starter Marty Popham (0-1, 7.82) took the second-game loss despite holding Altoona (Pa.) to two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Akron OF Tim Fedroff (.364) went 5-for-7 with two doubles in the twinbill to boost his hitting streak to 12 games.
Notes: Fedroff is 24-for-49 (.490) during his hitting streak, with five doubles and 12 RBI. His .364 batting average is second in the Eastern League to Portland Sea Dogs OF Alex Hassan’s .368....RH reliever Chen Lee pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts in the second game. He is now 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in 13 games — all in relief — striking out 34 and walking six in 23 2/3 innings while yielding 18 hits.
AAA Columbus Clippers
Pawtucket Red Sox at Clippers suspended by rain after 3 1/2 innings, with Clippers leading, 2-1 The game will resume in the bottom of the fourth inning on Friday at 5:05 p.m. The regularly scheduled game will follow, and will be seven innings.
Before the game was suspended, RH starter Mitch Talbot, on a rehabilitation assignment form the Cleveland Indians, had pitched four innings, allowing four hits -- including a solo home run -- while striking out five and walking one. Clippers' 2B Jason Kipnis (.279) and SS Cord Phelps (.303) had slugged solo home runs. It was the fourth homer of the season for Kipnis and the seventh for Phelps -- including the fourth in his last nine games.
Notes: OF Jerad Head went into Thursday night’s game leading the International League in hitting (.356), and was fourth in on-base percentage (.407) and fifth in slugging percentage (.558). He made an out in his lone at bat before Thursday night's game was suspended, putting his average at .352.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
Indians 4, Hillcats 3 RH starter Clayton Cook got the win for the Indians in the Carolina League game in Kinston (N.C.). Cook went 5 2-3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks, with five strikeouts. RH Toru Murats, LH Chris Jones and RH Preston Guilmet combined to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, with Guilmet getting his seventh save. 1B Chase Burnette (.217) drove in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly. SS Casey Frawley (.221) singled twice and drove in a run and catcher Roberto Perez (.188) lined an RBI double.
Notes: Guilmet has pitched 14 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out 15, walking none and allowing eight hits....OF Tyler Holt (.295) was 0-for-3 but scored a run after drawing a walk. He has reached base in his last 19 games. The hitless game followed a 10-game stretch during which Holt was 13-for-32 (.406).
A Lake County Captains
Tincaps 9-4, Captains 2-3 Lake County's Kyle Blair gave up a three-run homer in first inning to Fort Wayne, Ind.'s Jose Dore. Blair gave up eight runs in 2 innings and the Captains never recovered in the first seven-inning game of a doubleheader with the Tincaps. Captain Ronny Rodriguez homered in the seventh. In the second game, Fort Wayne took advantage of two Captains' errors to win in extra innings, 4-3.
Notes: RH reliever Nickolas Sarianides (2-1, one save, 2.37) went into Thursday night’s games with a 1-1 record, one save and a 1.29 ERA in his last eight games, fanning 14, walking three and allowing seven hits in 14 innings.
