Civic leader is mourned

Tributes have been paid to former Bradford Lord Mayor, Olivia Messer, who died last week, aged 83.

Mrs Messer was mayor at the time of the fire at the Valley Parade football stadium in 1985 and launched the Bradford Disaster Fund for victims. In the aftermath, Margaret Thatcher, Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited the city, but Mrs Messer said she "would have much preferred not to have met them at all than have to meet them in such circumstances".

Her son Laurence remembered her as "a do-er, never happier than when trying to help people, especially the underdog". She was active in the local Jewish community. Four former mayors and Bradford's current Lord Mayor, Naveeda Ikram, attended the funeral.
