Week ahead: Signs of cold - Risk of snow in north, Jan 18 - 09:35

Temperatures will be varying across the country during the coming days. At times it could go cold enough for snow in northern Scotland. However, it is the middle of next week which draws our attention right now as from the final day of the forecast things could go colder. For the weather for the next few days click here Saturday 21/1/12 A broad warm sector covers the UK and Ireland on Saturday morning bringing plenty of cloud and some outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most in the north and west. A cold front will be passing south through Scotland, although the timing of this is unclear. The cold front is likely to bring some heavier bursts of rain with it through Scotland, northern England and Ireland, this turning to snow on it's northern edge as cooler and brighter weather moves into the north. Highs at 6 to 13C. Sunday 22/1/12 A cool northwesterly flow across the country through Sunday with low pressure to the north of Scotland. This is going to be bringing wintry showers across northern and western Scotland. Across England and Wales it is going to be brighter and cooler, although there will be showers in the west. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Monday 23/1/12 Low pressure is northeast of the country on Monday with fronts sweeping east. That will take cloud and periods of rain with them, some of them heavy at times. It is likely to be breezy and cool too. Drier weather should follow from the west, although some snow showers affecting northern Scotland. Highs at a cold 2C in northern Scotland, 8C in southern England. Tuesday 24/1/12 Low pressure remains to the east and west of the country on Tuesday. Fronts are expected to be passing eastwards, bringing rain which will fall as snow through Scotland and increasingly northern England. Highs around 1 to 5C. Wednesday 25/1/12 The jet stream is overhead on Wednesday with low pressure north of Scotland. This is going to bring a much more unsettled day with a mix of sunshine and showers, these wintry on the hills. Highs at 2 to 6C. Thursday 26/1/12 A cold day across the country with low pressure in control. Fronts affecting southern England bringing rain and sleet here. Wintry showers through Scotland, northern England and Ireland, with the chance of significant snow accumulating at low levels by the end of the day in Scotland. Highs at 0 to 6C.
