Issues from Israel and Iran to conversion featured in the annual conference of Masorti Judaism, Yom Masorti, held this year in Edgware and attended by more than 150 people.
Leading Masorti rabbis Jonathan Wittenberg, Jeremy Collick and Chaim Weiner were among the speakers. Wide-ranging sessions were led by Dan Berelowitz, former head of international aid charity Tzedek, Labour peer Lord Glasman and New Israel Fund chief executive Adam Ognall.
Younger participants were catered for by a "children and families track" including a singalong with musician Jess Gold, Marc Shoffren's story-telling and a mini-camp programme with Noam worker Dan Simons. The finale was an adapted version of Robbie Gringras's show, That's Why I'm (Still) Here, as a celebration of Israel for Yom Ha'atzmaut.
New North London Synagogue participant Shona Holt said the day had been "excellent". She had enjoyed the session with publisher Judy Piatkus - "some people came specifically to hear her. I also went to a session about women in Israel and the recent issues around women's rights and public spaces. I finally attended a documentary and discussion about the realities for asylum-seekers in all Western countries."
A presentation was made to outgoing Masorti executive director Michael Gluckman.
