Shachar all made up for world glory

Shachar Head loves doing her hair and make-up like any other teenage girl ? but she's the only one with the Max Factor when it comes to powerlifting.

Born three months premature at just 2lbs 13oz, Head has grown to emerge as the most promising talent in the sport after breaking every world record on offer.

But while she's in the gym every day pumping iron alongside fully grown men with bulging biceps, schoolgirl sensation Head says she's just as likely to be found out and about in a stylish dress and some fancy shoes.

"I go to the gym and work out but I like to come home, put on a dress and go out with my friends ? I love being a girl," she said.

"I even make sure I put on a bit of lipstick when I'm lifting at competitions.

"I'm not a tomboy or anything like that. I like to look good and feel good about myself."

Already a British and European champion in her age group, the 15-year-old has set her sights on World championship glory this November.

Head already holds world records in both the squat and bench press categories and is now hoping to secure the top honour in power lifting in Glasgow.

"I've got a real shot of becoming a world champion in my age category," she added.

"I'm already lifting 150kg at the dead lift and the women's world champion lifts 190kg so I'm not too far off that.

"She's 40 and I've just turned 15 so I've got a real opportunity of reaching the top one day.

"I've been working with a new coach, Chris Morgan, and I've really improved already.

"It's great to have so much support from people all over the country and I've had a Facebook Athlete page set up for me.

"My friends at school think it's great and although some of the boys were a bit funny about it at first, it's OK now because I've beaten them all at arm wrestling!"

Head, who works out at Steve's Gym in Newton Abbott, Devon, is already causing shockwaves across the power lifting world.

While powerlifting recently failed in its bid to become an Olympic Sport, Head's profile is continuing to rise with sponsorship being sought to catapult her career further.

She has been shortlisted to carry the Olympic torch following her achievements and her mother, Lilach, is hugely proud of her daughter's run of success.

"She's an incredible girl and she has so much talent," added Lilach.

"What she's done is fantastic in such a short space of time and the whole family is so proud of her.

"Hopefully we can get some funding to support her and then she really can go on and become very successful."
