AAA Columbus Clippers
Indians 7, Clippers 3: Right-handed reliever Zach Putnam (2-1, 3.80) took the loss, the fourth straight for the Clippers after starting the season 25-8, in the International League game in Indianapolis. Putnam gave up five runs (four earned) in 1 2/3 innings. Columbus RH starter Zach McAllister (6-0, 2.80), after winning his first six starts, got a no-decision, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, with six strikeouts, in six innings.
Notes: Clippers outfielder Jerad Head was hitless in four at bats, but still leads the league with a .365 batting average....First baseman Wes Hodges (.262) has an eight-game hitting streak, and is 9-for-16 (.563) in his last four games, with a double, home run, seven RBI and five runs.
AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 5, Baysox 3: Left-handed starter Matt Packer (1-5, 4.50) allowed one run on five hits, with eight strikeouts, in seven innings to get the Eastern League win for the Aeros in Bowie, Md. Akron took a 3-0 lead in a third inning keyed by doubles from 2B Matt Lawson (.244) and SS Juan Diaz (.250), LF Tim Fedroff's (.333) RBI single and RF John Drennen's (.256) sacrifice fly. RH closer Cory Burns pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 12th save.
Notes: Fedroff has hit in nine straight games, going 16-for-37 (.432) with three doubles and eight RBI....Packer, 23, was a 32nd round pick of the Indians out of the University of Virginia in 2009. He was 0-5 with a 5.18 ERA going into Sunday's game. Packer was a combined 9-7 with a 2.04 ERA for the Lake County Captains and Aeros last season....OF Jordan Henry (.300) is 18-for-50 (.360) with 16 runs, nine walks and 8-of-9 in stolen base tries in his last 12 games....1B Matt McBride (.254) is 15-for-43 (.349) with five homers, three doubles, nine RBI and nine runs in his last 11 games.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
Keys 9, Indians 1: Starter Toru Murata (0-2, 5.52) yielded four runs (three earned) in three innings and reliever Jose Flores allowed six runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Indians lost a Carolina League game in Frederick, Md. Kinston has lost six of its last seven games, totaling six runs in the losses.
Notes: 3B Justin Toole (.298) singled home the Indians' run in the seventh inning....Indians reliever Preston Guilmet is 0-0 with five saves, pitching 12 1/3 scoreless innings in 11 games. He struck out 14, walked none and allowed six hits....SS Tyler Cannon is 3-for-9 with three walks in three games since being promoted from Lake County, where he hit .366, which still leads the Midwest League....OF Jason Smit is 4-for-16 with a double and triple in six games since being moved up from Lake County, where he hit .344.
A Lake County Captains
Captains, Whitecaps rained out: The Captains' doubleheader at Classic Park in Eastlake was postponed because of rain. The Midwest League teams will make up the games by playing doubleheaders on May 28 and May 30 at Classic Park. The May 28 games will begin at 6 p.m. and the May 30 games at 1 p.m.
Notes: OF Anthony Gallas is second in the Midwest League with a .356 batting average. He trails only former teammate Tyler Cannon, who was hitting .366 for the Captains before being promoted to Kinston last week. Gallas is tied for the league lead with 16 doubles. He has four homers. ... RH reliever Nikolas Sarianides (2-1, one save, 2.50) has struck out 17 and walked two, allowing 13 hits, in 18 innings. ... RH reliever Clayton Ehlert (0-1, eight saves, 2.03) has fanned 13, walked one and given up 10 hits in 13 1/3 innings.
