A DEDICATED community has kick- started a campaign to raise cash for vital repairs at a Neath Valley church.
Church leaders decided to keep St David's Church and its church hall in Resolven open in March, leaving the village to launch a fundraising appeal to raise the money for the essential repairs.
The historic church, part of which dates back to 1850, has repairs that are expected to cost between 105,500 and 124,500.
Following public meetings to discuss the church's fate, the steering group made up of the Reverend Peter Lewis, church members and members of the community was set up.
Strategic plans for the repairs covering a period of three years have now been submitted to Vale of Neath Parish PCC.
Steering group member Angela Rees said: "Given the strength of commitment demonstrated within the community for retaining the church, a gift day for the whole of the parish is to be held to support the fundraising.
"We are hand delivering a gift day envelope to every household in the parish.
"All funds raised from this gift day will be utilised solely for the restoration of the church and we are very confident that the church members and community will support generously.
"We are also working on forming a Friends of St David's community where people throughout the country and the wider world with links to the church can help support the restoration and repair projects."
Resolven councillor Des Davies said: "I hope everyone will respond favourably to the appeal.
"St David's Church is a tremendous feature in Resolven and one of the original places of worship.
"It would be a sad thing for it to be lost.
"I hope people will give generously."
The gift day will be on Sunday, June 12. Residents are being asked to drop off their envelopes at Resolven Post Office, Marcia's or to councillor Des Davies at 12 Llety Dafydd in Melincourt, no later than Saturday, June 11.
