Question mark over quiz rabbis

Rabbis lost a University Challenge-style battle to their Christian clergy counterparts - with both sides failing to score in the sections on their own religions.

The Jewish team at the CCJ event in Oxford comprised Wolfson College PhD student and former South London Liberal rabbi James Baaden, West London Reform's Rabbi Debbie Young Somers and Oxford University chaplain Rabbi Daniel Braune Friedman.

"The questions were devised by the Oxford CCJ committee and they were actually quite difficult, especially science and literature," Rabbi Young Somers reported. "There were two sections - 'Judaism for Jews' for our team, and 'Christianity for Christians' for their team - which we both got wrong." As in University Challenge, if the initial answer was wrong, the team could not progress to the additional questions. "But we also had a section where we were asked about each other's faiths and we did much better.

"It was a really good learning experience and great fun but shows us where there are gaps in our knowledge. The Christian team weren't sure what Chanucah was."
