Month ahead: Valid from 30/08 to 26/09 2011 - Better end to September, Aug 30 - 14:50

UK prospects for the period: 30/08/2011 - 30/09/2011 Well summer seems to have forgotten what to do across the British Isles and Ireland, and I certainly don't see any sign of it making a late return to us during the course of this forecast period. Crucially hurricane season is now well underway in the Atlantic, and the track of these storms is currently up the eastern seaboard of the States, and then out in the Atlantic where they are being hooked-up by the jet stream and then being flung eastwards towards Europe. We might hold out for a change later in the month though, perhaps a build of high pressure then? *30/08/11 - 04/09/2011* A change in conditions through the coming week (see the Week Ahead forecast for more detail). It is going to be dry with high pressure across the country through the week, but then as we head into the weaken things do change. Low pressure is expected to push fronts eastwards bringing increasingly unsettled weather through the weekend. That rain could be heavy in western areas with as much as two-inches of rain falling across parts of southwest Scotland and eastern Ireland. However, do check the latest short-term forecasts as by the time you read this things may have changed. *05/09/2011 - 19/09/2011* Don't take too much notice of the dates above. I do think that through the week the jet-stream will become established over the country and may be quite a strong feature. This means that the weather will be unsettled with bands of rain passing from the west, eastwards through the course of the week. That rain could be heavy at times mainly, but not exclusively, in the west. It could be that the far south of England sees less overall rain, but I suspect that there will be rain here, just not as much as in the north. Windy at times just about anywhere too. Now, it is unlikely to be wall to wall rain and I do suspect that there will be two or three days of dry weather in this period, it's just that the dry weather is unlikely to last more than 24-hours or so each time. Temperatures will probably be around normal with rainfall a little above normal. *19/09/2011 - 25/09/2011* During this period we may well get a feel of an 'Indian summer'. My suspicions are that high pressure will build as the jet stream buckles and hurricane begin to take a more northerly (or southerly) track around the UK. This brings with it sunshine and warm temperatures, perhaps into the low to mid-20's Celsius. There will be good spells of sunshine, but some autumnal mist and fog patches to clear out of the way in the mornings. Perhaps the first ground frost of the season for many under clear skies at night? *25/09/2011 - 30/09/2011* The end of the month probably sees the high pressure collapsing away to the south. However, it may just cling onto southern coasts, and so much of southern England may well stay dry. the northern two-thirds of the country are likely to be more unsettled with rain at times here, and the most of this rainfall across the northwest of Scotland.
