Tigers hit for the cycle in sixth to take 6-2 lead over Texas in Game 5 of ALCS

Tigers hit for cycle in the sixth as Ryan Raburn singles, Miguel Cabrera doubles, Victor Martinez triples and Delmon Young homers in succession to shatter 2-2 tie.

DETROIT, Mich. -- Left-hander C.J. Wilson had a plan for the rain, but apparently not for the Tigers.

The Tigers, facing elimination in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, hit for a straight cycle Thursday in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead 5 at Comerica Park.

In a series frequently delayed by rain, Wilson said Wednesday that he had a plan for how to stay ready if rain interrupted his second start of the ALCS. Rain didn't hit, but the Tigers did.

Ryan Raburn started the sixth with a single. Miguel Cabrera followed with a double that took a kangaroo hop off third base and over Adrian Beltre's head to score Raburn for a 3-2 lead. Victor Martinez tripled past a diving Nelson Cruz in right field for a 4-2 lead and Young followed with his second homer of the game.

Young's homer was his fifth of the postseason and the third allowed by Wilson in the game.

Wilson, who did not come out for the seventh, allowed six runs on eight hits, in six innings.

The Rangers missed a chance to take the lead in the sixth against Justin Verlander. They loaded the bases with one out on Mike Napoli's single, David Murphy's double and Mitch Moreland's walk. Verlander escaped when Ian Kinsler sent his first pitch to third baseman Brandon Inge, who stepped on third and threw to first for a double play.

Josh Hamilton tied it for Texas at 2-2 with a single to left center off Verlander in the fifth.

Kinsler drew a one-out walk and Elvis Andrus singled him to second as Verlander started to labor. His first two pitches to Hamilton were balls to put his pitch count as 85. After Hamilton's single, he struck out Michael Young in a pitch sequence where he hit 101 and 102. The pitch he got Young on was a 86 mph curveball.

Beltre, the next batter, had a great at-bat with runners on the corners. He sent Verlander's first pitch, a 102 mph heater, just outside the right field foul pole. Beltre was retired on a 410-foot drive to center field that would have been out of most park, or at least off the wall.

Young put the Tigers ahead, 2-1, with a two-out homer in the fourth. Young, 0-for-9 in the ALCS and playing with a strained left oblique muscle, hit Wilson's first pitch over the wall in left field.

Alex Avila pulled the Tigers into a 1-1 tie with a homer in the third. Avila, 1-for-17 in the first four games of the ALCS, hit Wilson's first pitch over the left field fence with one out to tie the score.

Wilson, in 223 1/3 innings during the regular season, allowed 16 homers. He's allowed six in the postseason.

Verlander, Detroit's 24-game winner, started and gave up a leadoff double to Kinsler. The Rangers delivered Kinsler without the benefit of a hit as Andrus moved him to third with a grounder to second and Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly to center for the first-inning lead.

Young followed Hamilton with another double, but Verlander retired Beltre on a soft liner to third for the third out.

Wilson retired seven straight before Avila, hobbled with a knee injury, homered. Ramon Santiago followed the homer with a single to short and continued to second on Andrus' throwing error. It was the Rangers' second error of the series.

The potential rally cooled when Austin Jackson struck out swinging and Ryan Raburn flied out to right.
