Hamas claim Abbas doesn't want unity deal

The prospect of a unity deal between Hamas and Fatah have been further undermined after a high-level Hamas official accused President Mahmoud Abbas of being disinterested in striking one.

Mahmoud Zahar, a leading spokesman for Hamas, said the Palestinian leader was "not interested in achieving" a deal.

He told the Britain-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that Mr Abbas' reluctance meant that "reconciliation will not be achieved at all". He said this was because Mr Abbas feared the consequences of working with the terrorist group Hamas against the wishes of the US and Israel.

Mr Zahar's comments come a week after Mr Abbas met Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal in Cairo to discuss the future of co-operation between the two rival groups.

The Palestinian president said that a "new page" had been opened in communication between the rival factions. A date next May was scheduled this week for national elections.

Britain expels Iranian diplomats and closes Tehran embassy

William Hague says diplomats must leave UK within 48 hours, saying storming of British embassy in Iran had backing of regime

The foreign secretary, William Hague, has ordered the expulsion of Iranian diplomats from the UK and announced that the UK is closing its embassy in Tehran, saying that the storming of the mission on Tuesday had the backing of the regime.

Hague said Iranian diplomats would have to leave Britain within 48 hours, and that all British embassy staff in Tehran had now left Iran.

He said that the move would not mean the severance of all ties, as the two countries could continue to have a dialogue at international meetings, as the US has done since the seizure and closure of its embassy in 1979, but the move marks a new low in relations, which have been growing increasingly strained.

The foreign secretary said it was not possible to maintain an embassy in the current circumstances, adding that the estimated 200 protesters who invaded the embassy and the British diplomatic compound yesterday were "student basij militia". The basiji operate as a youth wing of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, one of the most powerful institutions in the country.

Hague said it would be "fanciful" to think that the embassy invasion could have taken place without "without some degree of regime consent".

He added: "If any country makes it impossible for us to operate on their soil they cannot expect to have a functioning embassy here."

Iranian diplomats in London refused to comment on the announcement.

Foreign Office sources said the foreign secretary had made his statement minutes after he received confirmation that the 26 British embassy staff had taken off from Tehran, heading for Britain.

The announcement had been delayed until then for fear "there would be some nutso backlash against our people", the source said.

The fleeing diplomats left the Iranian capital with whatever possessions they could salvage from their homes after the British residential compound in northern Tehran had been completely ransacked, an official said.

"The residential accommodation had been comprehensively trashed. The mob had gone through houses and apartments, wrecking them, nicking things. It was like a gang of feral street kids had been given license to do as much damage as possible," he said.

The crowd had also set fire to the first floor of the embassy, the official said, causing extensive damage. The only staff left at the embassy and the residential compound will be local security staff, who will be asked to prevent the buildings becoming "a playground for local youths".

In the next few days a decision will be made on which country's embassy could act as a UK interests section. In previous low points in UK-Iran relations the Swedes have played that role, but no decision has yet been made.

Hague will now go to Brussels for an EU foreign ministers' meeting looking for support, and for other capitals to call in resident ambassadors to complain.

The message, as one official put it, would be: "If you let your thugs destroy our embassy and assault or scare our staff, you cannot expect to maintain normal civilised relations with the rest of the world."

Earlier on Wednesday, Norway temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran, citing security concerns, and Sweden summoned Iran's ambassador to Stockholm to its foreign ministry. "Iran has a duty to protect diplomatic premises, and authorities there should have intervened immediately," said a Swedish foreign ministry spokesman.

The Scandinavian countries' reactions follow outspoken condemnation of the attack from the US and France. The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, said: "The United States condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms. It is an affront not only to the British people but also the international community," she said.

In Iran the attack on the embassy has prompted mixed reactions even among the supporters of the regime. The Iranian foreign ministry last night expressed regret over the "unacceptable behaviour by [a] few demonstrators" and promised an investigation.

But Ali Larijani, the country's powerful parliamentary speaker, told MPs on Wednesday that the attack was the result of "several decades of domination-seeking behaviour of Britain".

Larijani also criticised the UN security council for condemning Tuesday's incident.

"The hasty move in the security council in condemning the students' action was done to cover up previous crimes of Britain and the United States," the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Larijani as saying during an open session at Iran's parliament.

In contrast , the Iranian foreign ministry said it was committed to protecting diplomatic personnel and said a thorough investigation would be launched.

In Tehran the episode has been seen as the latest episode in an extraordinary power struggle between the conservatives in parliament and the judiciary on one side, and the government of the president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on the other.

Pro-Ahmadinejad supporters have interpreted the recent events as an attempt to hamper the government's efforts to reduce tensions with the international community and undermine the government's foreign policy.

Iranian state agencies, meanwhile, tried to depict Tuesday's events as an spontaneous protest by "university students" and attempted to distance the establishment from the attack.

Seasonal outlook: A cold outlook - Possibly milder Christmas, Oct 31 - 07:29

*December* There appears to be some indication of lower pressure to the north or northeast, higher pressure vales to the west or southwest, this suggests a rather chilly run of northwest to northerly air to begin the first 'meteorological' month of winter. This rather chilly regime should weaken as the cold flow is cut off as pressure rises as a weak high or ridge crosses the UK, the flow behind switching to a less cold westerly. Into the middle of the month the Atlantic seems to have the controlling influence, so temperatures recovering with spells of rain for all areas and windy conditions at times. As we move away from the mid-month period there is evidence to suggest that pressure will be rising once more, so conditions should settle and temperatures falling back to become rather chilly, mist, fog and frost perhaps becoming a persistent problem. The run up to Christmas is where the forecasting becomes 'problematic' and 'interesting' as the evidence suggests that high pressure may become stubbornly entrenched to the east or northeast, Atlantic low pressure piling up as a blocked and complex feature to the west and south west, a strengthening and cold south-easterly to perhaps easterly component wind establishing. This threatening some wintry precipitation as frontal systems move into the UK, I have a 'gut' feeling that Atlantic will eventually win the battle with milder conditions flooding through over Christmas. It will however be 'extremely messy', colder weather returning as the year closes. If I ignore this feeling and 'stick rigidly' to the pattern in front of me then, the cold weather persists and it'll remain very cold and wintry through until the end of the month, low pressure moving into a very cold pool of air, over the UK with further wintry precipitation for all areas. *January* It's a cold start to 2012 with low pressure edging away to the east, a cold northerly flow covering all regions, wintry showers beginning to die away as pressure rises and an anticyclone builds through the UK, settling the weather in a cold and still pattern. High pressure persists for a time as does the settled and chilly weather, this anticyclone shows signs of pulling back westward into the central Atlantic, allowing a more unsettled northwest to westerly flow to establish across all areas in the run up to mid-month, low pressure then moving into the UK, rather unsettled cold and windy, a real messy scenario with spells of rain, sleet and some wintry precipitation too almost anywhere. The middle of the month looks like seeing colder weather for all areas and with low pressure wrapped up within the pattern, this may lead to a rather wintry spell for all areas during this middle period. This rather chilly and wintry mix continue right through until the latter stages of the month, when the flow looks likely to ease as pressure rises to the southwest with milder westerly regime establishing. However this recovery in terms of both temperature and fortune may be temporary as colder air looks likely to flood back into the UK late in the month. The breadmap to Mideast peace?

For those who say there will never be peace in the Middle East, here's a "hole" lot of proof that coexistence is possible.

Reports the New York Daily News:

The oldest Jewish bialy and bagel shop in New York City is being rescued by two Muslim cab drivers - and they plan to keep it kosher.

Zafaryab Ali and Peerzada Shah said the first bagels and bialys they ever tasted when they immigrated here from Pakistan more than 16 years ago were made at the Gravesend noshery.

"It doesn't matter," Ali said of the cross-cultural differences. "I make the food for everyone."

Could a good bit of dough be the elusive solution to an age-old dispute?

Greg Little may not be a No. 1, but he'll be productive - Browns Comment of the Day

"I hate to pop the bubble here for some, but Greg Little will never be a No. 1 receiver. He does not have the explosive quickness and speed to be that guy. "I hate to pop the bubble here for some, but Greg Little will never be a No. 1 receiver. He does not have the explosive quickness and speed to be that guy. But with his size he can become a good possession type of receiver - that is assuming he can improve his hands and keep improving his route running. They're going to have to draft a No. 1 WR."

Baltimore Ravens A.M. Links: Should the Ravens fear the Browns? Ravens need to improve offensive line; Ravens need to be patient

Should the Baltimore Ravens fear themselves or the Cleveland Browns?

lewis.jpgLinebacker Ray Lewis.

Matt Vensel of The Baltimore Sun wonders if the Ravens should fear the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

His reason?

The Ravens have a habit of losing to lesser opponents following emotional wins.

Vensel writes how the Browns have a chance to pull off the upset because the defense is the biggest reason why they have been able to hang around in tight games against teams like the Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers.

One bright spot for the Browns, who have lost four of their past five games, was the return of “Madden” cover boy Peyton Hillis on Sunday. Hillis had been sidelined for a month and a half with a hamstring injury. In his first game back, he rushed for 65 yards on 19 carries in a 23-20 loss to the Bengals.

Vensel writes how Hillis' running style could present a challenge for the Ravens defense if linebackers Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe remain on the sidelines this weekend.

More Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens hope to improve offensive line play (Baltimore Sun).

Lee Evans will see more action for the Ravens (Baltimore Sun).

The Ravens need to be patient with Ray Lewis (Baltimore Sun).

Intermarriage down in the USA?

For as long as I can recall, intermarriage rates have been assumed to be rising in the West.

But an American demographer, recrunching the data, suggests they could have dropped in recent years. You can read more here.

Football - a game where colour should not be an issue

The campaign to kick Racism out of football in England has been one of the success stories of the modern game.

As per the battle against Antisemitism, Islamophobia and Homophobia, it remains an ongoing project, and one that is rarely out of the headlines.

On the day that Luis Suarez was charged with racially abusing Patrice Evra, the words of FIFA president Sepp Blatter on the topic left the football world open-mouthed. They displayed a lack of understanding of FIFA?s own rules of the game.

While we have been trying to kick it out, he has brushed it under the carpet.

There followed a fierce reaction from players, officials and media, dare I say predominantly in this country, forcing Blatter into a hasty retreat, and something of a grovelling clarification after he said: "there is no racism on the pitch".

It was the behaviour of a man that is out of touch and out of mind. It appears he is well past his sell-by date in terms of representing world football.

Some will say he has worked wonders for African nations and third world countries but his comments are ill-advised to say the least.

Whilst the game has moved on, Mr Blatter has been well off the pace for some time. In his eyes, racism can be "settled with a handshake at the end of a game". His words left Rio Ferdinand "astonished".

Former players including Paul Elliott, Brendan Batson and John Barnes have campaigned long and hard to help get the unacceptable face of football out of the game.

Many people, including a significant number in this country, have worked above and beyond the call of duty to help identify the problem and root out the evil. A lot of time, money and effort has been put in to addressing the problem with several high-profile players, past and present, flexing their muscles to ensure it stays in the public eye.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is no place for the N-word, the Y-word, the P-word or the G-word in football, let alone society.

It appears that the message has not reached Mr Blatter though, and there is still plenty of work to be done.

Someone needs to remind Mr Blatter that football is a global game, a global brand. Man against man. Colour should not be an issue, but clearly it still is.

Kinston takes 13-inning triumph over Salem: Minor-league report

Akron rally not enough against Manchester; Lake County falls in 11 innings; Scrappers nipped by Brooklyn; Crushers' 10-game win streak snapped by Evansville.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Indians 9, Red Sox 7: Kinston scored two in the top of the 13th inning to win a Carolina League game in Salem, Va. The Indians' late rally appeared to stall when Jeremie Tice was picked off third, but a single by Doug Pickens loaded the bases and the K-Tribe scored runs on a wild pitch and Roberto Perez sacrifice fly. Kyle Landis (8-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 11, Red Wings 7: Tim Fedroff drove in five runs with three hits and a bases-loaded walk and visiting Columbus used a six-run sixth inning to overcome an early deficit against Rochester. Third baseman Jared Goedert had five hits, drove in two runs and scored three times for the Clippers. Zach Putnam picked up his eighth save with two innings of shutout relief.

Mitch Talbot started for Columbus, but gave up six hits and six runs in two innings of work.

Notes: Rightfielder Jerad Head leads the Clippers with 22 home runs and 66 RBI. He's hitting .282. Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez leads the staff with a 10-5 record. He has a 2.45 ERA. He has started 19 games for the Clippers and turned in two complete games. Right-hander Josh Judy leads the team with 18 saves. He has struck out 55 batters in 44 innings and has a 3.63 ERA.

AA Akron Aeros

Fisher Cats 5, Aeros 3: Akron rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning but couldn't overcome a five-run deficit as they lost an Eastern League game at Manchester, N.H. Right-hander Austin Adams (9-9) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings.

Note: Akron was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

A Lake County Captains

Dragons 2, Captains 1: Billy Hamilton scored all the way from first base when Drew Poulk singled and Luigi Rodriguez bobbled the ball in center field and host Dayton defeated Lake County in 11 innings in a Midwest League game. The Captains scored in the first inning when Ronny Rodriguez doubled in Luigi Rodriguez. Kyle Petter (2-3) pitched the final 2 innings for Lake County and took the loss.

Notes: Right-hander Clayton Ehlert leads the Captains' bullpen with 14 saves. He has a 1.62 ERA in 34 games. He has pitched 441/3 innings.

A Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Cyclones 2, Scrappers 1: A two-out single by second baseman Todd Hankins in the fourth inning was the only scoring that host Mahoning Valley could muster in a New York-Penn League loss to Brooklyn (N.Y.). Ramon Cespedes (0-1) was the loser. He gave up one run and two hits in two innings of relief.

Independent Lake Erie Crushers

Otters 12, Crushers 7: Lake County's franchise record 10-game winning streak was snapped with a loss in a Frontier League game in Evansville, Ind. The Otters pounded out 17 hits.

Michele Bachmann: The (not) Jewish presidential hopeful

As with every US Presidential election, the candidates are after the Jewish vote. (The fact that they'd also quite like to capture the Christian vote, the Muslim vote, the Humanist vote and the votes of the people who believe aliens walk among us, is not the point).

Because we're not even in primary season yet, it's the many, many Republican hopefuls who are clearing their calendars to visit synagogues and community centres, hug Jewish babies and eat as much honey cake as they can stomach.

Chief among them is Michele Bachmann. But apparently, she's already ahead in the race.

Reports the New York Post:

"Mitt Romney is facing a new challenge: He's having trouble raising money from some Jewish donors who mistakenly believe one of his opponents, Michele Bachmann, is Jewish.

Some Jewish donors are telling fund-raisers for Romney, a Mormon, that while they like him, they'd rather open their wallets for the "Jewish candidate," who they don't realize is actually a Lutheran."

Really? Really?

They think she's Jewish?

Ok, she has a passably Jewish first name (not biblical, but common enough in the community - her husband is Marcus, so, likewise).

And yes, her surname has that Yiddish-sounding suffix "mann" - I myself am proof that many Jews also have that honour - and she's bolshy, pushy, and looks like she could cook Friday night dinner for 42 with three different starters and two kinds of chocolate cake to finish. Oh, and she once spent some time on a kibbutz.

But, hello?! She's also what the left wing media might kindly refer to as a kerazzeee bible basher, who talks about the strength she finds in religion on a near-daily basis and whose husband runs a gay conversion clinic. Her maiden name is Amble and she studied at Winona State University, which I'm pretty sure doesn't have an active JSoc.

Without wishing to perpetrate a stereotypical view of Americans as "never knowingly intelligent", seriously guys?

Because if you're still not sure, here's positive proof. No Jew worth their smoked salmon would pronounce chutzpah like this.

Rampant Redbridge go top

JC MSFL DIVISION ONE
NORSTAR A 1 REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE B 3

Two more goals from the deadly Dan Orgel helped Redbridge B leapfrog Norstar to finish the weekend top of the table.

The influential Jamie Cooper also found the net as Stirling Kay's men extended their unbeaten league run in stylish fashion in Wembley.

This really was a very good contest, with both teams being very young and determined to get the ball down and play through the midfield.

Redbridge took a early lead when Orgel fired in from 25 yards - a great strike.

After this, Norstar played some good football and were looking the better team, until Jamie Cooper beat two players and smashed a unstoppable shot into the top corner from 40 yards.

Then just before half time, RJC keeper Ollie Brooks produced a magnificent one-handed save a la Gorden Banks - going the wrong way twisted his body and some how got down to the foot of the post and finger tipped it away.

In second half, Norstar put the pressure on, and got there reward with a deflected shot from long range. They went close twice again, hitting the bar.

However, with Scott Kay and Greg Lautman, on his debut, excellent in the centre of defence, Norstar's saw lots of the ball and their best chances came from long range or from set-pieces.

Then with Redbridge down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes, they Redbridge broke away and Orgel, who had a outstanding game, beat three men and put the game out of reach.

Delighted RJC boss Stirling Kay told JC Sport: "We showed another side of our character today. We were under presure but dug in and worked for each other to get a very hard three points."

Norstar's goal came through Sam Isaacs.

Phil Peters, the Norstar manager, told JC Sport: "Looks like Sterling summed things up pretty well. We were the better team for much of the match but once again the woodwork got the better of us and we couldn't take our chances in the second half.

"Redbridge have some fabulous players and all three of their goals were special - but we gave them too much time on the ball and it wasn't until we were 2-0 down that we started playing our best football.

"We were missing a lot of players but it's frustrating to have lost playing so well, rather than our defeat to Neasden last week where we deserved it.

"Redbridge are easily the best team we've played this season but we're already looking forward to the return game and an opportunity to seek our revenge."

Gilad Shalit

Within hours of the news breaking that a deal has been done to secure the release of Gilad Shalit, the debate about whether it is proper to exchange hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for the sake of one Israeli soldier has re-erupted.

Israel has always held to the tenet that it will do anything and pay a very high price for its citizens, something it has demonstrated over and over again. Those who have suffered at the hands of terrorists are, understandably, unhappy about the swap: a former rabbi in the IDF has warned today that those who are being released will slide back into their old haunts and habits immediately, the better to wreak further havoc on Israel.

I was very struck by the comment on one website in which someone wrote that he did not know how the Shalit family would live with themselves when the next inevitable act of terrorism was committed by someone who had been released so that their son could be free. But who can judge the Shalit family in that way? Who can imagine the pain and suffering undergone by the family in the last five years? And who among us can comprehend the lonely, frightening situation of Gilad himself, never knowing if the next knock on the door was someone coming to kill him?

There is no right and wrong answer to this agony, except to be grateful that Gilad Shalit's long nightmare may indeed be coming to an end. May such a nightmare not be repeated by any other Israeli soldier.

Kirtland Hornets kept state title game in their sights

Kirtland's Zach Santo dives into the end zone for a touchdown as Bucyrus Wynford's Nate Brown tries to push him out in the second quarter of play in the Division V State Semifinals Friday, November 25, 2011 in Canton. Kirtland won the game 42-0. - (Joshua Gunter, The Plain Dealer)

"We've been thinking about this since our freshman year," said senior standout Christian Hauber following Kirtland's 42-0 domination of Bucyrus Wynford that put the Hornets into next Friday's Division V state championship game. "There was never a doubt in our minds that we would have a great chance to be here."

Bibi the misunderstood PM

In a sense, it is only fitting that the Prime Minister of the world's most misunderstood country should himself be a much misunderstood man. Benjamin Netanyahu is routinely described as the hardest of hardliners, a man utterly opposed to conciliation, and a warmonger. The trouble is, none of these anti-Netanyahu cliches are supported by the facts.

It is not just Israel's opponents who paint him thus. Many Israelis and supporters of Israel would have us believe that he is a one-man obstacle to Middle East peace. If only he would retire from the political scene, these people seem to believe, the entire region could be instantly transformed into a harmonious idyll, envied even by Switzerland for the eternal serenity of its fluffy, universally-affectionate tribes.

Let's tackle that "warmonger" allegation first. Netanyahu, who is in his second term, is one of very few leaders in Israel's history not to have presided over a war. Not even Golda Meir, considered comparatively doveish by many around the world, could make the same claim. This, despite Netanyahu ruling during a time of intensifying threats and a series of bloodthirsty attacks from several borders. Likewise, if he is a hardliner, disinterested in peace or negotiation, then he has a mighty strange way of showing it.

During his first term, he personally negotiated with Yasir Arafat. To even meet Arafat - perhaps Israel's most bloodthirsty enemy ever - is not the act of a man disinterested in achieving peace.

But meet Arafat he did, first at the Erez checkpoint in Gaza and later in Washington DC where, against his personal instincts, he shook his hand on the White House lawn, just as Yitzhak Rabin had done. These were not empty gestures. In January 1997, Bibi handed most of Hebron to the Palestinians, and the following year he signed the Wye River peace memorandum.

When he became Prime Minister again in 2009, he continued where he had left off, making concessions, some of them nothing short of historic. He made it clear from the start that he was ready to negotiate with any Arab leader and that he endorsed a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Within months, he was back at the White House, negotiating with a Palestinian leader - this time Mahmoud Abbas.

Netanyahu has removed many West Bank checkpoints, a move that has directly contributed to the dramatic upturn in the Palestinian economy. He also became the first Prime Minister in Israel's history to order a freeze in settlement construction.

These facts speak for themselves, yet there is no more powerful rebuttal of claims that Netanyahu is disinterested in negotiation than the welcome sight of Gilad Shalit's return to Israeli soil. The PM was teased when he was pictured smiling in the background as Gilad was reunited with his father Noam. However, it was Netanyahu's negotiations - with Hamas of all people - that took Gilad home.

He is not without faults. For instance, his acceleration of settlement construction in response to the Palestinians securing membership at UNESCO was childish and divisive. It damaged Israel's standing unnecessarily, especially among those it can least afford to lose: the unaligned voices of quiet reason, whose goodwill is invaluable when the going gets tough.

The going could get tougher than ever if Netanyahu orders military action against Iran's nuclear programme. The spectre of Iran's reprisal including swift, large-scale terror attacks in Western cities is real.

Sadly, we know that in such a scenario many would choose to blame Israel, not the terrorists. At that stage, those Israel supporters who have stood by or even co-conspired while an increasingly unfair image was constructed of Israel's current Prime Minister, might wish they had acted otherwise.

The image of a country's leader has a huge bearing on how the country itself is perceived. Look at America's international standing during George W Bush's presidency.

The facts support a fairer perception of Netanyahu. Misunderstood and rarely given credit for the painful concessions he has made, he really is Israel personified. His is a uniquely difficult job. All I am saying is, give Bibi a chance.
