Captains split doubleheader against Lansing, Aeros blanked by Bowie, Kinston tops Wilmington.
AAA Columbus Clippers
Clippers 4, Bats 3: Columbus pounded out 13 hits to win an International League game over visiting Louisville. Left fielder Jerad Head (.389) went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and catcher Luke Carlin (.379) went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs with his second home run of the season.
Alex White (2.00 ERA) started and went seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs. He struck out seven. Reliever Josh Judy (2-1) blew the save, but picked up the victory.
Notes: After a 2-for-4 night Wednesday, outfielder Chad Huffman is hitting .348 (8-for-23) with a pair of doubles, a homer and four RBI over his past six games.
AA Akron Aeros
Baysox 3, Aeros 0: Akron lost the finale of a three-game Eastern League series to host Bowie, Md. Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams was the tough-luck loser for the Aeros. He pitched 4 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, walking two and striking out seven.
The lone run Adams gave up came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Xavier Avery hit into a fielder's choice allowing Miguel Abreu to score and giving the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
Notes: LHP T.J. McFarland was promoted from Class A Kinston. He replaces RHP Brett Brach on the roster. ... The Aeros (7-7) begin a three-game series against the Reading Phillies Thursday at Canal Park. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
Indians 4, Blue Rocks 1: Kinston won its second straight game, beating host Wilmington, Del., in Carolina League action. Indians starter Marty Popham had a perfect game going through four innings, but was removed because of a pitch count. Popham retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out three. Tyler Sturdevant (2-1) picked up the victory in relief. Doug Pickens (.389) had three of the 10 Kinston hits.
Notes: Eight of the nine K-Tribers in the starting lineup got at least one hit. ... Dating back to last season, Popham has thrown 12 innings of no-hit ball. Popham was part of a combined no-hitter for Kinston in his last regular-season start, last September in Potomac.
A Lake County Captains
Captains 5-5, Lugnuts 1-6: Lake County and Lansing split their Midwest League doubleheader. Captains starter Kyle Blair earned his first professional win, tossing six innings in the opener. He allowed a run on five hits, walked a batter and struck out four.
The Captains' Jesus Aguilar crushed his first home run of the season. In the nightcap, Lake County's Giovanny Urshela homered and had four RBI. Reliever Tony Dischler (0-1, 22.50 ERA) took the loss for the Captains. He gave up five runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Notes: The Captains open a three-game series against Bowling Green, Ky., Thursday at 7 p.m. in Eastlake.
