Should Jim Tressel resign as Ohio State University football coach?
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and his bosses will go before the NCAA Committee on Infractions on Aug. 12 to answer to the allegations that he failed to act with "honesty and integrity" by withholding information about Buckeye players trading memorabilia for tattoos and cash.
But should he still be on the OSU payroll by then?
The multilayered web that's has been unraveling since word broke that quarterback Terrelle Pryor and receiver DeVier Posey had swapped their Big Ten championship rings and other memorabilia for ink reached a high point Monday when the NCAA issued its allegations.
The organization accuses Tressel of playing ineligible players during the 2010 season by not reporting the information. The result could be the loss of all Ohio State wins during the year, the lone exception being the team's Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas, which occurred after the violations came to light.
The NCAA has suspended the players involved for the first five games of the season. Ohio State has suspended Tressel for a like time, and fined him $250,000. Further penalties are possible, even likely, according to Plain Dealer beat writer Doug Lesmerises' account.
The scandal clearly has replaced the X's and O's of regular Ohio State football. Has it reached the level of distraction where Ohio State would best be served by Tressel's departure?
