Cord Phelps drives in three as Clippers top Charlotte: Minor-league report

De La Cruz sharp for Aeros, Kinston shut out twice, Captains fall in Dayton.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 9, Knights 7: Cord Phelps' two-run homer in the seventh inning, his fifth of the season, and a RBI single in the fourth led the Clippers over the Charlotte Knights in Columbus. Jason Kipnis added a two-run homer in the third.

Jeanmar Gomez (3-0, 2.45) got the win, allowing five hits and three runs. He walked three runners. The Knights' Jordan Danks hit a grand slam in the sixth inning after Gomez loaded the bases and was replaced by Frank Herrmann. The Clippers' record improves to 25-8.

Notes: Phelps leads the Clippers in RBI with 23. Columbus will face Charlotte again Thursday starting at 11:35 a.m.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 4, SeaWolves 1: Aeros pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz (2-3, 2.32) held Erie to one run while Akron scored four runs on six hits to win in Erie, Pa. The Aeros start a four-game road series Thursday against the Bowie Baysox.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Pelicans 6-2, Indians 0-0: Myrtle Beach blanked Kinston in both games of a doubleheader in South Carolina. In game one, Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Joe Wieland, fresh off of Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors, faced just 21 batters in the seven-inning, complete-game victory.

Notes: Drew Pomeranz is scheduled to start for Kinston Thursday as the series continues in Myrtle Beach.

A Lake County Captains

Dragons 3, Captains 1: Donald Lutz hit two home runs for Dayton as the host Dragons defeated the Captains. Lutz gave Dayton a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run shot to left field. His second was a solo shot to right field in the sixth inning. In the top of the eighth inning, the Captains got on the board.

Anthony Gallas doubled to start things off, moved over to third on an Alex Lavisky groundout and Argenis Martinez drove in his 13th run of the season with groundout to second.
