Jeanmar Gomez pitches 8 sparkling innings as Clippers win in 10: Minor league report

Righty Gomez, who spent part of season with Indians, is 4-1 with 2.53 ERA. Matt McBride's hitting keys Aeros win; Kinston wins behind Adam Abraham's hitting; Captains lose.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 2, Bulls 1 CF Ezequiel Carrera (.279) walked, moved to third on SS Cord Phelps’ (.306) double and scored when 2B Jason Kipnis (.291) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 10th inning as Columbus won an International League game at Durham, N.C. Clippers RH starter Jeanmar Gomez, who is 4-1 with a 2.53 ERA, didn’t get a decision, but held the Bulls to one run on three hits in eight innings. He struck out four and walked three. RH reliever Zach Putnam (4-1, 2.59) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Notes: Gomez, 23, was 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance with the Indians this season, after starting the season with the Clippers. He went 4-5 with a 4.68 ERA in 11 starts for the Indians last season....Luis Valbuena (.296) was 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, during which he is 17-for-40 (.425) with three doubles and six RBI. Valbuena played his ninth game in left field. He has also played 21 games at shortstop, eight at third base, one at second base and five at designated hitter.

Valbuena, 25, has played one inning in left field as a major leaguer -- last season with the Indians. He has played 164 major league games at second base, 34 at shortstop and 10 at third base. Valbuena hit .250 with 25 doubles, three triples and 10 homers in 103 games for the Indians in 2009, but slumped to .193 in 91 games last season. Valbuena's first major league stint was with the Seattle Mariners in 2008, when he hit .245 in 14 games.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 8, Phillies 4 RH reliever Paolo Espino (2-0, 3.09) got the win, allowing one run on three hits over the last six innings, and 1B Matt McBride (.271) slugged a two-run home run, an RBI double and another double as the Aeros won the Eastern League game at Reading (Pa.). Espino struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. Akron DH Beau Mills (.241) had a pair of RBI singles.

Notes: McBride is hitting .324 (35-for-108) in his last 29 games, with eight doubles, one triple, eight homers, 26 RBI and 21 runs....LF Tim Fedroff (.363) is hitting .422 (43-for-102) in his last 26 games, with 22 RBI and 20 runs. He has hit in five straight since having a 20-game hitting streak snapped.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Indians 7, Blue Rocks 6 LF Bo Greenwell’s (.268) RBI groundout and 1B Jeremie Tice’s (.275) run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Indians a 7-5 lead and enough to win the Carolina League game over Wilmington (N.C.). RH reliever Kyle Landis (1-0, 0.00) pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts for the win. RH closer Preston Guilmet pitched the ninth inning for his 13th save, despite yielding a solo homer that bumped his ERA to 1.29.

3B Adam Abraham (.248) clouted a two-run homer, an RBI double and another double. Tice had three hits.

A Lake County Captains

Cougars 4, Captains 3 Travis Jones’ ninth-inning two-run homer off Captains’ RH reliever Nickolas Sarianides (3-3, 3.71) put Kane County (Ill.) ahead, 4-2, in a Midwest League game at Eastlake’s Classic Park. It was enough to offset Captains’ catcher Dwight Childs homer, his first, in the bottom of the inning. 3B Giovanny Urshela (.228) homer, his sixth, and 1B Jesus Aguilar’s RBI double provided the other Lake County runs. Captains RH starter Steven Wright, who is 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts, got no decision, holding the Cougars to two runs in seven innings.

Notes: Captains’ RH starter Michael Goodnight (4-3, 2.37) is 2-0 with a 1.14 ERA in his last four starts. Goodnight is holding hitters to a .173 batting average, and has struck out 56 and walked 20 in 57 innings.
