Minor league report: Three Lake County pitchers combine to throw no-hitter in 3-1 Captains win

Trey Haley, Francisco Jimenez and Clayton Ehlert dominate Dayton Dragons, who scored their run on a walk, stolen base and two wild pitches. Grady Sizemore doubles and singles for Akron.

CLASS AAA

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS

Monday: At Louisville Bats, postponed by rain.

Tuesday: Clippers (4-0) at Louisville Bats (3-1), 6 p.m. doubleheader, including makeup of Monday's postponed game.

Notes: Right-hander Corey Kluber, making his first appearance of the season, and left-hander David Huff are expected to make the starts for the Clippers in Tuesday's twi-nighter. ... Huff pitched six scoreless, three-hit innings to get the win in the Clippers' 4-3 season-opening victory at Indianapolis on Thursday. ... OF Bubba Bell has played two games, and is 4-of-4 with two doubles. ... 2B Cord Phelps is 8-of-17 (.471) with one double, one triple, two home runs, seven RBI, four runs and four walks. ... CF Ezequiel Carrera is 7-of-17 (.412) with one double, one triple, six runs and two stolen bases. ... Relief pitchers Joe Martinez, Jensen Lewis, Zach Putnam, Josh Judy and Carlton Smith (all right-handers) have combined to pitch 12 2/3 scoreless innings, with a 1-0 record, three saves and 15 strikeouts.

CLASS AA

AKRON AEROS

Monday: Catcher Chun Chen's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Aeros a 6-4 lead and they held on to defeat the Altoona Curve, 6-5. CF Grady Sizemore, continuing a rehabilitation assignment as he comes back from knee surgery, was 2-of-4 with a double, two RBI and a run. SS Juan Diaz slugged a solo homer and singled, and RF Jordan Henry was 2-of-3 with two runs.

Right-hander Bryan Price got credit for the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Right-hander Cory Burns got his third one-inning save in as many appearances. Burns struck out two and allowed one hit. He has given up two hits and not allowed a run or a walk in his three games. Remarkably, he struck out the side in each of his first two one-inning outings, so he has eight strikeouts in three innings.

Lefty Matt Packer made the start, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk, with three strikeouts, in 5 2/3 innings.

Tuesday: Altoona Curve (2-3) at Aeros (3-2), 7:05 p.m.

Notes: Sizemore has played three games. He is 5-of-11 (.455) with two doubles and no strikeouts. ... OF Jordan Henry is 8-of-20 (.400) with three RBI, three runs and two stolen bases. ... OF Tim Fedroff is 5-of-14 (.357) with a double. ... Left-hander Nick Hagadone has pitched four scoreless innings in two relief appearances, striking out three while allowing one hit and no walks. ... Righty Austin Adams pitched six scoreless, two-hit innings, fanning six and walking one, to get the win as the Aeros topped Binghamton, 1-0, on Sunday. 

CLASS A (ADVANCED)

KINSTON INDIANS

Monday: The Indians lost at home, 4-1, to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Kinston southpaw Giovanni Soto pitched well despite taking the loss. Soto allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, with eight strikeouts, in 5 2/3 innings. Right-hander Travis Turek pitched two scoreless relief innings, fanning three while yielding one hit and no walks.

1B Adam Abraham's solo homer gave the Indians their run.

Wilmington left-hander Noel Arguelles, 21, started and pitched four scoreless innings in his American professional baseball debut. He allowed two hits, struck out one and didn't walk a batter.

Arguelles signed a five-year, $7 million contract with the Kansas City Royals organization on Jan. 7, 2010, after he had defected from Cuba. He missed last season, undergoing shoulder surgery during the summer.

Tuesday: Wilmington Blue Rocks (2-2) at Indians (1-3), 6:30 p.m.

Notes: 1B Adam Abraham is 4-of-11 (.364) with one double, Monday night's homer and four walks. ... LF Bo Greenwell is 5-of-14 (.357) with two stolen bases. ... RF Abner Abreu is 5-of-14 (.357) with two doubles. ... Top pitching highlight remains the start by lefty Drew Pomeranz -- the Indians' first draft pick last June -- in Friday night's season-opening 7-6 win over Winston-Salem. Pomeranz pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings with nine strikeouts. He gave up two hits and walked none.

CLASS A

LAKE COUNTY CAPTAINS

Monday: Right-handed starter Trey Haley, lefty Francisco Jimenez and righty Clayton Ehlert combined to pitch a no-hitter as the Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons, 3-1, in Eastlake.

Haley pitched the first three innings. He struck out four and walked two, and allowed Dayton's run in the third inning on a walk, stolen base and two wild pitches.

Jimenez got the win, as he fanned two and walked one in four innings. Ehlert picked up his second save by tossing the final two innings, with no strikeouts or walks.

The Captains went ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning when RF Jason Smit walked and scored on catcher Alex Monsalve's double.

CF Carlos Moncrief doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch with 1B Tyler Cannon batting in the fifth inning, for a 2-1 Captains' lead. Cannon then clouted the Captains' first home run of the season to end the scoring.

Tuesday: Dayton Dragons (1-4) at Captains (3-2), 7 p.m.

Notes: OF Jason Smit is 10-of-19 (.526) with two doubles and a triple. ... 3B Giovanny Urshela is 8-of-20 (.400) with two doubles. ... 1B Tyler Cannon is 4-of-12 (.333) with one triple, Monday night's homer, three RBI and three runs. ... 1B Jesus Aguilar is 5-of-15 (.333) with a double and four RBI. ... Lefty Mike Rayl and righty Michael Goodnight have both earned wins with five-inning, one-hit starts. Rayl pitched scoreless baseball. Goodnight allowed two runs, both unearned.
