Rain and heavy showers will affect southern parts of Germany, The Alps into northern Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic. Mainly dry and sunny across southern Italy, the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Fine and sunny as well across Romania, the Ukraine into Russia and Poland while rain spreads into Finland and The Baltic States. Lots of sunshine to come across Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Strong gales will continue across southern France and through the Straits of Gibraltar. Most of Spain and Portugal looks fine and dry but lots of showers will be found from the Balearics east to Sardinia.

Sunday Cooler across western Europe with the warmest weather across Iberia and the Balkans into Turkey. Patchy rain across England fades to sunnier spells. Fine and dry across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with but a lot of cloud across the Low Countries today. Rain is forecast for Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Lots of dry, weather is expected across The Baltic States, Poland, Belarus, The Ukraine, Romania, Hungry, The Czech Republic into the former Yugoslavia. An area of heavy showery rain and thunderstorms is forecast Italy, The Alps, Corsica, Sardinia and to the Balearics. Warm and sunny today across Spain and Portugal, hot in the south. Sunny and very warm as well today across Greece and Turkey. The winds remain strong across southern France and through the Straits of Gibraltar.

So let me get this straight

Jacques Rogge is president of the International Olympic Committee.

Jacques Rogge, in this capacity, has consistently and repeatedly refused to hold a minute's silence in memory of the 11 murdered Israeli athletes. Their deaths, incidentally, took place at the Munich Games at which Rogge himself represented his country as an Olympian.

As recently as Saturday, Rogge rejected yet again the idea of a minute's silence at the Opening Ceremony.

We have four more days to go until the Games open. Global pressure is building on the IOC, from the athletes' widows to President Obama, from world leaders to American sportscasters.

So what did Rogge do? This morning, with no pre-announcement or fanfare, he went to the Athletes' Village, held a hastily assembled ceremony, and included a minute's silence. He wanted, he said, "to honour the memory of the 11 Israeli Olympians who shared the ideals that have brought us together in this beautiful Olympic village".

He said that the IOC owed it to those Israelis who "came to Munich in the spirit of peace and solidarity" to keep the spirit of the Olympics alive "and to remember them".

If ever there were a cynical response, this is it, designed to spike the guns of the Israeli widows who are due in London this week, attempting to present the IOC with their petition containing 103,000 signatures, calling for a minute's silence DURING THE GAMES. Not before the Games, not in some hole-in-the-corner event witnessed by almost no-one. Not in an event which allows Rogge to spread his arms wide and say, I have done something.

Only the truly naive will believe Rogge still has the ability to do the right and decent thing. But there are still four days left.

UK Forecast: Cloudy in south - Brighter to north, Sep 01 - 16:09

Sunday A front across the south of England on Sunday morning brings a fair amount of cloud here and the chance of some spots of rain. Most of the rain tending to the southwest with only a few spots of rain to the east. Cloudy through much of the Midlands, Wales and East Anglia at first, but this cloud should break with some brighter spells coming through as the morning progresses. Best sunshine over Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland, this lasting into the afternoon. Cloud may increase in western Scotland bringing some spots of rain here later. Highs at 22C in the sunshine over central areas, nearer 14C in northwest Scotland.

Sunday Night There could be some cloud and spots of rain affecting southern coasts until later this evening. Through Wales and most of England and southern Ireland skies will be clearer with these spreading south through the night. Thicker cloud across Scotland where a front will be bringing some rain, especially north of the Great Glen. Lows around 5C in some rural parts of Wales and northern England, more generally 8 to 10C.

Monday A warm front is to the east of the country on Monday, with a cold front approaching western Ireland. Much moisture is trapped between these two features and so we expect Monday to be a cloudy day across much of Scotland, Ireland and northern England with periods of rain in western Scotland and Ireland. There will be some brightness in eastern Scotland and northeast England. For the rest of England and Wales the day should be brighter with sunny spells, the best of them always through more central and southern areas. Highs around 23C in southern England, 16C in northern Scotland.

Tuesday A weakening occluded front slips south into southern England on Tuesday. This brings a band of cloud and some spots of showery rain with it through the Midlands, east Anglia and Wales in the morning, before reaching more southern counties in the afternoon, although with very little rain. Brighter skies behind the front brining sunny spells over northern England and Scotland as well as Ireland. A few showers in northern and western Scotland where it will be windy too. Highs could get to 24C in southern England, 18C in northern Scotland.

Clippers 13, Bats 12 Columbus SS Gregorio Petit (.248) was 4-for-4, scored three runs, hit two doubles and a home run (his fifth) and drove in five runs in the Clippers' International League win over visiting Louisville on Thursday.

Clippers SS Jason Donald (.255) hit his fourth homer, 3B Jared Goedert (.303) hit his ninth, and LF Tim Fedroff went 3-for-4 to raise his average to .330.

Lefty David Huff (5-4, 4.97) started for Columbus and pitched 5 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits, including three home runs, and four walks.

Aeros 4, Flying Squirrels 3 Lefty Matt Packer (1-0, 0.00) did not allow an earned run in his 2012 Akron debut, and the Aeros beat host Richmond (Va.) in Eastern League play.

Winners
Michael Laudrup
Played two, won two. Scored eight, conceded none. Not a bad start for Michael Laudrup and Swansea who brushed aside newly promoted West Ham to make it back-to-back Premier League victories. Laudrup’s new signings; Chico Flores, Michu and Jonathan De Guzman have settled in quickly with Michu in particular looking a bargain-buy and filling the void vacated by the departed Joe Allen. Few expected the Welsh club to repeat their heroics of last season especially after losing their manager and midfield lynchpin to Liverpool. Not even the impending departure of Scott Sinclair looks likely to derail the Swansea juggernaut from enjoying their most productive start in the top flight. Michael Laudrup deserves all the plaudits coming his way for overseeing the Swan’s rise up the table and building on the foundations laid down by Brendan Rodgers.


Chelsea
Roberto Di Matteo defied the critics to guide Chelsea to the Champions League glory last season but few could have predicted the Londoner’s ascension to the summit of the Premier League after a plethora of summer transfers and talks of Di Matteo’s services not being retained. Instead, the Londoners have rattled off three consecutive victories to go top of the table thanks to the brilliance of new signing Eden Hazard and the rebirth of Fernando Torres. The former Liverpool striker has rediscovered his mojo in recent weeks thanks to Di Matteo’s decision to switch to a more fluid 4-3-3 formation with the Spaniard at the apex of the attack. Chelsea are certainly reaping the dividends of Torres’ return to form and have the look of title contenders after only a fortnight of the campaign.


David Moyes
The Everton manager is one of the most respected in European football for consistently finishing in the top echelons of the Premier League on a relatively meagre budget. This season the Everton coach has his club’s supporters buzzing following terrific wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa. No injury concerns coming into the new season has certainly helped Moyes who has enjoyed the rare luxury of a full-strength squad to choose from. The Scot deserves immense credit for building a dependable back four of Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin and Baines while bringing in Pienaar from Spurs and Jelavic from Rangers has made Everton a threat going forward. The emergence of Marouane Fellaini as one of the form strikers of the Premier League suggests another fruitful campaign for the Toffees and their long serving manager.


Losers
Wayne Rooney
The Manchester United player’s frustrating start to the new campaign was further compounded following a nasty injury at home to Fulham on Saturday afternoon which looks like ruling the striker out of action for some considerable time. The nasty gash on Rooney’s thigh failed to overshadow Alex Ferguson’s decision to bench his former record signing following a disappointing display at Goodison Park. Rumours of Rooney’s summer off-field activities affecting his weight and sharpness refuse to go away suggesting a few weeks off recuperating from this latest injury might be best for both player and club.


Manchester City
True, Roberto Mancini’s side avoided defeat at Anfield despite playing well below par for the second weekend running but the Citizens would have surely lost were it not for some pitiful Liverpool defending. Mario Balotelli was anonymous, playmaker David Silva has still to rediscover last season’s form and the City back four has a worryingly porous look about it these days. Of most concern to Mancini however will be the fact his side has been 2-1 behind after 70 minutes for the third game running and having to scramble a result from the jaws of defeat. On current form the reigning champions will struggle to retain their title with off-field rumblings of discontent between Brian Marwood and Mancini only further adding to a difficult start.


Arsenal
The new-look Gunners attack has yet to gel and drew a blank for the second consecutive league match following Sunday’s stalemate at the Britannia Stadium. Arsene Wenger cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines despite his team coping admirably with Stoke’s long-ball tactics yet failed to put the ball in the net. The lack of a cutting edge up front is all the more galling for Arsenal fans on the same weekend former captain and talisman Robin van Persie opened his account for Manchester United. Of Wenger’s three high profile acquisitions only Cazorla has stood out as a potential match winner thus far while Podolski and Giroud struggle to find their feet. On the plus side, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on as substitutes to inject some badly needed pace and Arsenal desperately need their English internationals to shine in the coming months if a Champions League place is to be obtained.
 

Liverpool defending
Brendan Rodgers’ first home game as new Liverpool manager produced plenty of neat attacking football reminiscent of the Northern Irishman’s time in charge at Swansea but all his side’s good work (including excellent strikes from Skrtel and Suarez) was undone by some awful defending. Manchester City were gifted two goals with a mix-up between Reina and Kelly drawing the visitors level at 1-1 before Skrtel’s ill-advised back-pass presented Carlos Tevez with a straightforward equaliser to earn City a point. The re-building job facing Rodgers is difficult enough and will take a hell of a lot longer to sort out unless Liverpool sort out their current defensive deficiencies.


Daniel Levy
The Tottenham Hotspur chairman appears to be leaving his club’s probable transfer activity until the last minute of the window once again. Holding out for the right price on Luka Modric from Real Madrid is all well and good yet failure to complete an early deal leaves Spurs requiring a new striker, midfielder, defender and goalkeeper with just seven days before the window shuts. Unfortunately for Tottenham and Levy, every club they approach for players is aware the North London club has money to spend and are raising their prices accordingly. It is going to be an interesting week for Spurs fans to say the least so expect plenty of last minute deals and images of AVB scratching his head.

Hapoel cruise into Europa League group stage

Hapoel Tel Aviv will join Liverpool and Spurs in Friday's Europa League group stage draw following an easy 7-1 aggregate victory over Dudelange of Luxembourg.

The Israelis ran out 4-0 winners in Thursday night's second leg at the Bloomfield Stadium, with three of the goals coming from substitutes in a contest where all the goals came in the last 22 minutes.

A strike from Hanan Maman on 66 minutes allowed the floodgates to open as Victor Mare doubled the advantage 11 minutes from time.

Maman scored his second and Hapoel's third six minutes from the end before Israeli international Salim Toama completed the scoring after 88 minutes.

Hapoel will go into pot two for the draw.
