'We don't want to live here' says couple in troubled Swansea centre flats

A COUPLE living in a troubled city centre block of flats have spoken of their misery living in the "horrible" area.

The couple, who occupy a property in the Matthew Street flats in Dyfatty, said they had to put up with drug dealers and users in the area on a daily basis.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "People come in and out all the time to get their drugs at all times of the night.

"It is not nice, it is a horrible area to live in.

"We don't even go out of the flat for very long as we are fearful of getting broken into — we don't want to live here anymore."

The woman said: "My family don't come round to visit as they are too afraid — it is crazy. I have a 17- year-old daughter and she is scared to go out the door as she is too frightened."

The comments from residents follow Chief Superintendent Mark Mathias's claim that the area was plagued by more problems now than it was 30 years ago. He was speaking at a meeting with residents which was called following the death of two women who plunged to their deaths at the site last month.

Resident of the Croft Street flats, Nicholas Rhodes, said: "Shouting and screaming goes on all the time. People ring the buzzer of any flat they can get so they can get access to visit their dealers."

Builders at the block of flats said they were briefed before they started work to watch handrails in stairwells in case needles were hidden behind them.

A council spokesman said it had and will continue to take steps to help address the problems in the area.

"In the past six months the District Housing Office has taken successful action against a number of individual tenancies because of their antisocial behaviour including drug dealing.

"Joint patrols have recently commenced in the area involving the police and Neighbourhood Support Unit."
