SWIMMER OF THE YEAR

Michael Meldon

 

Strongsville Sr., 100 freestyle

 

College: Ohio State.

Notable: Won the Division I state 50-yard freestyle in 20.51 seconds and the 100 free in 40.59. Swam legs on the 200- and 400-free relays, with the Mustangs finishing fourth in both events. He was involved in all 100 of his team's points for a sixth- place finish.

OTHER ALL-STARS

Andrew Bartley

 

Firestone Sr., 100 breaststroke

 

College: Undecided.

Notable: Won the Division I event for the second straight year, covering the distance in 55.91 this year. He was second as a sophomore. Swam the breaststroke leg in the 200-medley relay, with Firestone finishing eighth.

Ben Stewart-Bates

 

University School Sr., 200 freestyle

 

College: Davidson.

Notable: Finished third in the Division II 200 free and fifth in the 500 free. Swam legs on the winning 200- and 400-free relays, the 200 team setting a Division II state record (1:24.64).

Nicholas Crane

 

University School Jr., 200 IM

 

College: Undecided.

Notable: Swam the anchor leg on the Division II record- setting 200-free relay, with Crane coming through to win the race against Lima Shawnee by 0.01 second. Also anchor on winning 400 relay. Second in backstroke and fourth in individual medley.

Joe Craven

 

Westlake Sr., 100 butterfly

 

College: Ohio State.

Notable: Won the Division I event in 49.74 to become Westlake's first boys state champion. Finished sixth in the event as a sophomore. Scored all 25 of his team's points by earning 12th place in 100 backstroke B final.

Mike Gaudiani

 

University School Sr., 500 freestyle

 

College: Harvard.

Notable: Won the Division II event for the second straight year, win ning in 4:33.40. Swam legs on winning 200- and 400-freestyle relay teams. Finished second in the 200 free for the second straight year.

Michael Kreft

 

Solon Sr., diving

 

College: Ohio State.

Notable: Won the Division I diving championship for the second straight year, scoring 506.25 points to cap his high school career.

Andrew Malone

 

University School Sr., 50 freestyle

 

College: Undecided.

Notable: The 2010 Plain Dealer Swimmer of the Year turned in another standout season. Won 50 free in Division II record 20.50 and won breaststroke in record 55.54. Swam anchor freestyle leg on record medley relay and leadoff leg on record 200 relay.

Russell Stack

 

University School Jr., relays

 

College: Undecided.

Notable: Swam butterfly leg on Division II record medley relay team and second leg on winning 400 relay. Won both B finals in butterfly and 100 free.

Davis Staley

 

Chagrin Falls Jr., 100 backstroke

 

College: Undecided.

Notable: Won Division II event in state record 50.32. Finished fourth in butterfly. Swam leadoff backstroke on third- place medley relay team and anchor on sixth- place 400 relay.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Brian Perry

University School

 

Notable: The Preppers powered their way to a third straight Division II state title, piling up 377 points to Cincinnati Wyoming's 191. They won all three relays, two in record time, and had three winners and three second-place finishes in individual events. Just as impressive, Perry put together a demanding schedule that saw his squad win duals against state champions from Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia. US also knocked off Ohio Division I titlist Cincinnati St. Xavier in a dual for the first time. Perry and the Preppers will have a tough act to follow next season.
