Canals to bull ring

Lock gates weighing a massive two tonnes each are on their way to the Glastonbury Festival site to create a Portuguese bull ring.

Festival founder Michael Eavis wants 70 of the old 12ft gates from the Caen Hill lock system in Wiltshire for his 200-seat Campo Pequeno arena.

The 10-inch thick oak gates are ideal for sound-proofing, and the arena created will host drama, music, theatre, song, and mock bullfights with a matador flown in from Portugal.

British Waterways has spent 1 million replacing the lock gates on the 29-tier complex just west of Devizes. Gates last up to 20 years and the canal was last restored in the 1980s, hence the need to replace some of them.

At last year's event lock gates ended up as bridges and walkways for the festival.
