Revolution on surgery's roof

A Westcountry GP is leading the green revolution in Bath by having 150 photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of his medical centre.

Dr Patrick Eavis, son of Glastonbury Festival founder, Michael Eavis, said his Oldfield Park Surgery used a lot of electricity and he wanted to invest in the future by generating electricity.

He believes that – no matter which way the climate change debate goes – individuals and businesses have a responsibility to contribute to cutting carbon emissions.

He said: "We were getting huge electricity bills and I wanted to do something about it.

"The roof of the medical centre is perfect and we installed two rows of photovoltaic panels.

"It cost 100,000, and although we won't see a return immediately we will do in the future.

"Everyone has a responsibility, whether they agree or disagree with whether or not climate change is happening.

"It's frightening to know how much money is used on wasting energy. At least having the panels on our roof is us making a start."

Photovoltaics is a way of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into electricity.

Dr Eavis said: "It's good to do something for the environment, and if we all play our part it will make a huge difference. I hope it will encourage others to consider it."
