Wells WI
Our February 4 meeting attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd for an evening of Sex and Drugs, hosted by Mark Withers, Somerset County Council's boys and young men's development worker, and PC Spencer Page from Wells Police.
Mark, together with Jemma Lang, girls and young women's development worker for Somerset, provided a fascinating insight into their work aimed at educating Somerset teenagers about sexual health, contraception and relationship issues. They described the various initiatives to reduce teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, and outlined their work with vulnerable young people.
Working with the NHS and county councils, Mark and his team are dedicated to helping young people in Somerset overcome the challenging and often daunting issues which face them as they enter adolescence, and it was both an inspiration and a privilege to learn about their work.
During the second half of the evening, members enjoyed an entertaining and enlightening talk by Spencer, who brought along a sample of the most popular recreational narcotics and provided some shocking statistics about drug abuse.
Spencer discussed ways to recognise possible drug use in teenagers and highlighted the organisations which offer support to parents and young people affected by it.
Following the sex and drugs theme of February, the March meeting will celebrate rock 'n' roll as we welcome veteran Glastonbury Festival co-ordinator, Mark Cann, whose involvement with the festival spans nearly 30 years.
Mark will introduce a short documentary film, Behind the Scenes at the Glastonbury Festival, and discuss the impact of the event.
Offering a slightly different interpretation of the evening's theme, traditional sweet-makers, the Cheddar Sweet Kitchen, will present The History of Rock, an insight into the ancient craft of confection.
Details of these and future events are available on the Wells WI Facebook page. Annual membership to Wells WI is 30 and the next meeting is at 7.30pm, on Tuesday, March 1, at the Wells and Mendip Museum.
