Charity's food project is helping needy families

A NEW charity is distributing food to people who are going hungry in Swansea.

The recently opened Foodbank in Gorseinon provides nutritionally balanced food for people in crises who have nowhere else to turn.

Approximately three days' worth of meals are provided by the scheme to individuals or families in need of food.

Christian charity The Trussell Trust said the project had been set up because more people in the city are going hungry as a result of money difficulties, redundancy, or illness.

The Foodbank is run by the Riverside Christian Fellowship church, which has been based in Gorseinon for more than 15 years.

Vouchers are issued to those in need by agencies and front-line care professionals working across the city, which can then be redeemed at Foodbank.

David Ward, senior leader at the Riverside, said: "This is a serious problem, so I am glad we can work together with partners in order to provide at least a temporary solution."

Non-perishable food is donated to the Foodbank by individuals, schools and other churches.

It was set up after managers at Tesco in Fforestfach allowed volunteers to spend a day at their store inviting shoppers to donate something from their weekly shop to the Foodbank.

The response meant the Foodbank was able to open just before Christmas, but now the charity is looking to replenish supplies.

Volunteers have now been invited to carry out a food collection at Asda in Llansamlet next Saturday.

The initiative is supported by Gorseinon Institute and Gorseinon Town Council.
