Plans will secure our iconic poet's long-term legacy in Swansea

THE long-term legacy of Swansea's most famous son, Dylan Thomas, will be secured if a deal between Swansea Council and the University of Wales comes to fruition.

This is the message from the council after concerns had been raised about the future of the Dylan Thomas Centre in Somerset Place.

It insisted the centre had never been under threat.

The deal under discussion includes the centre retaining its name, hosting the Dylan Thomas Exhibition, and hosting the University of Wales Dylan Thomas Prize for young writers.

The University of Wales would move into the centre with a view to creating a base for culture, business and academia.

The man behind the centre's bookshop, Dylan Thomas expert Jeff Towns, was recently given notice to clear the shelves by the end of April.

Mr Towns has been running the bookshop since it opened in 1995.

Iwan Davies, the council's head of culture and tourism, said: "The proposed agreement with the university would secure Dylan Thomas's legacy in his home city of Swansea.

"The proposal to make it the home to the world's richest prize for young writers would ensure the Dylan Thomas Centre would continue to be the focal point for the poet."

Thomas lived from 1914-1953 and his works included Under Milk Wood.
