Minor league report: Indians' farm teams go 4-for-4 on the road

Columbus, Akron, Kinston and Lake County all get fine pitching, clutch hitting.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 9, Knights 3 SS Jason Donald drove in three runs with a double and two singles and winning LH starter David Huff pitched seven solid innings as Columbus boosted its winning streak to 11 games in Sunday’s International League game in Charlotte, N.C.

Huff (3-0, 3.19) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. RH reliever Frank Herrmann retired all six batters he faced, striking out five. LF Jerad Head (.361) had three singles for the Clippers (19-5).

Notes: DH Jason Kipnis (.266), who had an RBI double and a single, is 8-for-23 (.348) with a double, two triples and two home runs in his last six games....OF Travis Buck is 10-for-29 (.345) with two doubles, one triple, one homer and 10 RBI since the Indians optioned him to Columbus on April 19....3B Lonnie Chisenhall (.256) is 12-for-37 (.324) with a double and homer in his last nine games....LHP Scott Barnes is 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts for the Clippers, allowing six hits in 11 2/3 innings, while fanning 10 and walking 10. He began the season going 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two starts at AA Akron. He struck out 17, walked two and gave up five hits in 11 innings.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 10, Mets 1 Catcher Chun-Hsiu Chen slugged two home runs, singled and walked twice, and winning RH starter Austin Adams pitched seven three-hit innings to help Akron to an Eastern League win in Binghamton, N.Y.

Chen (.288, four homers) drove a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo clout in the fourth. RF John Drennen (.296) was also 3-for-3 with two walks, and doubled twice, and DH Jordan Henry (.283) had three singles. Adams (2-2, 3.09) gave up one run, struck out eight and walked three. LH reliever Nick Hagadone and RH reliever Cory Burns each pitched a scoreless inning.

Notes: 2B Karexon Sanchez (.105) was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. He went into the game hitting .061 (2-for-33) with a home run....The relief outing for Cory Burns (0-0, 1.17) was his eighth of the season. He had saves in his previous seven games. Burns has struck out 17, walked none and allowed six hits  in 7 2/3 innings....Nick Hagadone (1-0, 0.00), still considered a top prospect after undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in 2008, has pitched 14 2/3 scoreless innings with 19 strikeouts, allowing eight hits and two walks....The Aeros are 12-12.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Indians 3, Hillcats 1 RF Abner Abreu’s two-run homer snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning as Kinston earned a Carolina League win in Lynchburg, Va.

Abreu’s (.273) clout, his second of the season, followed a double by LF Bo Greenwell (.313). LH starter Drew Pomeranz, the Indians’ first-round draft pick last June, didn’t get the decision but was again impressive, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts, in 5 1/3 innings.

RH reliever Travis Turek (3-0, 2.65) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win, and RH reliever Preston Guilmet  pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for his third save.

Notes: Pomeranz is 0-0 with a 1.54 ERA in five starts. He has struck out 34, walked seven and given up 13 hits in 23 1/3 innings....Abreu scored Kinston’s first run in the top of the second inning. He singled, then stole second and third bases before coming home on a single by 3B Adam Abraham (.250). Abreu is 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts....Guilmet (0-0) has pitched 9 /3 scoreless innings in eight games. He’s fanned nine, walked none and yielded six hits....OF Tyler Holt (.288) is 11-for-26 (.423) with two doubles and a homer in his last seven games.

A Lake County Captains

Captains 5, Lugnuts 3 CF Carlos Moncrief (.241) led off the game with his fourth homer, and RH Nickolas Sarianides sparkled in relief to save the Midwest League win for Lake County RH starter Cole Cook in Lansing, Mich.

Sarianides (2-0, 2.25, one save) retired all seven Lansing batters he faced, fanning three. Cook (1-2, 4.43) gave up two runs on six hits and one walk in five innings, with four strikeouts. Captains 2B Argenis Martinez (.269) singled twice, drove in two runs, walked once and stole three bases.

Notes: Moncrief also walked twice for a team-high 18 this season, and stole his fourth base....SS Tyler Cannon (.361), in the lineup at DH, was 0-for-4 after going 11-for-25 (.440) with three doubles, a triple and a homer in his previous seven games....Sarianides has pitched 12 innings in seven games, striking out nine while allowing nine hits and one walk....RH reliever Clayton Ehlert (0-0, 1.00) has six saves in eight appearances. He’s given up four hits and a walk, with eight strikeouts, in nine innings.
