Warning as fires destroy nest sites

NIGHT-TIME revellers have been slammed for destroying sections of the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli, by leaving unattended camp fires burning.

Skylark nesting sites have been devastated by flames spreading through the dune slack at Lliedi Haven, at North Dock, and areas of natural beauty have been blighted by rubbish.

Nine separate sections of the dunes were badly damaged by fires on the haven over the Easter holidays, and an area of the Mabinogion Trail, in woodland at Sandy Water Park, has been left scorched by a campfire.

Park manager Rory Dickinson described the damage to the conservation area, which has bold no camping and no fire signs, as shocking.

"Several nest sites have been destroyed, especially those of the skylark, which is in full breeding at this time," he said. "Police have been making patrols, and in some cases have confiscated alcohol.

"We have no problem with people enjoying themselves but we have a minority who are spoiling it for others."

Rangers have been working to clear the damage and debris, including cans and bottles, and collected 595 black bags — 11 tonnes — of rubbish between Bynea and Burry Port over Easter weekend. Several abandoned tents have been confiscated.

Mr Dickinson said: "Stone camp fire sites have been found in the dunes and on the beach, and worryingly have been left unattended — in some cases burning through the night, spreading through scrub and threatening woodland."

A spokeswoman for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed reports of several small fires along the coastal path in recent days.

Anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour of any kind along the park is urged to report it to Dyfed Powys Police on 101.

Meanwhile the fire service has pleaded with people to stop lighting fires after crews from across Swansea responded to eight deliberately-set blazes.

Crews were kept busy from Wednesday evening into the early hours of Thursday morning tackling the blazes.

Gary Williams, assistant county commander for Swansea, said: "Fire-setting is a serious crime."
