SHRIEN Dewani could be jailed in a prison resembling a "five-star hotel" if he is convicted of ordering his wife's murder, a court has heard.
It has been suggested that the businessman would be put at risk of sexual violence if extradited to South Africa and detained in its often overcrowded facilities.
But the country's inspecting judge of prisons insisted high- profile inmates like Dewani would be likely to receive better care than usual.
Asked about the prison Dewani would be sent to if sentenced to 20 years or less, Judge Deon Hurter van Zyl said: "I thought 'if this is the quality of prisons it looks far too much like a five-star hotel'."
Dewani allegedly paid for his wife to be shot dead in the back of a "hijacked" taxi in Cape Town in November.
