It was a good night for Indians farm teams as they all picked up wins.
Clippers 19, Bats 3
Host Columbus rode the hot bat of Chad Huffman to a second straight International League win over Louisville on Thursday. Huffman became the first Clipper since Matt LaPorta to homer three times in a single game and set a franchise record with nine RBI. The Reds’ Johnny Cueto struggled in his second rehab start, going only 1 2/3 innings and allowing eight earned runs before exiting after 68 pitches.
Notes: Travis Buck played his first game as a Clipper and had hits in each of his first four at-bats, finishing 4-for-6 with three RBI.
Aeros 6, Phillies 3
Akron second baseman Karexon Sanchez picked an opportune time to get his second hit of the 2011 Eastern League season. With a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sanchez hit a two-run home run to right field that proved to be the difference as the Aeros went on to beat Reading at Canal Park.
Notes: LHP Eric Berger pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. He walked two and struck out four. . . . Cory Burns earned his Eastern League-best sixth save.
Indians 6, Pelicans 2
The Indians used their biggest inning of the season to take down Myrtle Beach in Kinston, N.C. It was the third-straight Carolina League victory for the Indians and brought an end to the Pelicans’ six-game winning streak. Trailing, 1-0, Kinston blew the game open with a five-run fifth.
Notes: Kinston’s Justin Toole went 2-for-3 and is now hitting .433 on the season.
Captains 9, Hot Rods 5
Host Lake County pounded out 16 hits en route to the victory over Bowling Green (Ky.) to improve to 8-7 on the Midwest League year. Francisco Jimenez (2-0) picked up the win. He worked three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out one.
Notes: Tonight, the first 1,000 fans will receive a limited-edition card commemorating the Captains’ April 11 no-hitter thrown by pitchers Trey Haley, Francisco Jimenez and Clayton Ehlert. First pitch is 7 p.m.
