Somerset farmer's girl made a MBE after fashion label success

Fashion designer Alice Temperley, who is the daughter of a Somerset cider-maker, has been made a MBE in the New Year's Honours list for her services to the fashion industry.

The designer, who is said to have 'loved making earrings' from beads on her parents' cider farm as little girl, grew up to see her unique designs grace red carpets around the world.

Ms Temperley, 35, who is said to draw inspiration for her designs from her foreign travels, is currently on holiday in Mexico with her husband and young son.

But back home at Pass Vale Farm, near Kingsbury Episcopi, her parents, Julian and Di are celebrating her award.

Mum Mrs Temperley said: "We are incredibly proud of her, she deserves it because she's worked very, very hard for the last ten years.

Mr Temperley, who is the man behind the infamous Glastonbury Festival Cider Bus, added: "We are very chuffed. It's an extraordinary story, and very much one of a Somerset farmer's daughter going to local schools and finding inspiration."

Ms Temperley attended Kingsbury Episcopi primary school, then Huish Episcopi community school, followed by Yeovil College and then St Martin's and the Royal College of Art.

Mr Temperley paid tribute to his daughter's inspirational art teacher Linda Green, who taught her at Huish Episcopi School.

He said: "She was a great encouragement to her, an inspiration."

Ms Temperley has previously publicly thanked her teacher for being "supportive, kind and making me feel happy."

As they toasted their daughter with their home-grown own label Somerset Cider Brandy, Mr Temperley added: "I hope she is an inspiration to all the thousands of girls who go to art college."

Since launching her Temperley label at London Fashion Week in 2000, and opening a Notting Hill boutique in 2002, Ms Temperley has won the adoration of the likes of Sienna Miller, Scarlett Johannson , Jennifer Lopez and Helena Christensen.

Temperley clothes are renowned for great attention to detail, whether in embroidery, beading, print or fabric, which include luxurious silks and French lace.

The designer, who crafts four collections a year, has also opened stores in New York, Los Angeles and Dubai.

And unlike some designers who have sold control of their businesses to larger companies, the Temperley label remains fiercely independent.

Temperley London is a family affair, with her husband, Lars von Bennigsen, as managing director, and Ms Temperley's sister, Mary, as head of sales.

Ms Temperley is also proud to fly the flag for Britain, with an enormous painted Union Flag covering the brickwork of Colville Mews, which is the company's headquarters in London.
