20,000 goals - and here's ten of the best

Simon Stone

ASTON VILLA winger Marc Albrighton scored the 20,000th Premier League goal with the equaliser in Wednesday’s Premier League match against Arsenal. Here 10 of the best from the previous 19,999.

Matt Le Tissier – Blackburn v SOUTHAMPTON (1994-95) It was a wonder that Le Tissier never played on a bigger stage than Southampton when he was capable of moments like this. Starting from inside his own half, Le Tissier beat three Blackburn defenders before firing a sensational shot beyond Tim Flowers.

Tony Yeboah – Wimbledon v LEEDS (1995-96) Yeboah controlled the ball his chest, bounced if off his knee and beat a defender with the left foot then curled his shot into the top corner with his right. A quite amazing effort, which justified its award as goal of the season.

Stan Collymore – LIVERPOOL v Newcastle (1995-96) The goal that settled the greatest game? An injury-time effort, set up by John Barnes, that led to Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan dipping his head behind an advertising hoarding to signal the end of a 4-3 classic and the title turning towards Old Trafford.

David Beckham – Wimbledon v MANCHESTER UNITED (1996-97) A signature Premier League goal that announced Beckham’s arrival on the biggest stage. Beckham was just inside his own half when he spotted Neil Sullivan off his line. The execution was perfect, Sullivan failed to get back and Brand Beckham was born.

Paul Scholes – Bradford v MANCHESTER UNITED (1999-00) A goal that sums up the simplicity of Scholes’ attitude to the game. Taking a central position 25 yards out, the midfielder was picked out by a David Beckham corner. Scholes only needed one touch to convert, a brutal volley that flew into the bottom corner. (Personally I'd prefer the one he scored at Villa Park - ed)

Paulo Di Canio – WEST HAM v Wimbledon (1999-00) One of those goals you have to watch again just to see exactly what has happened. Trevor Sinclair floated a cross to the far post when Di Canio, from a fairly acute angle, volleyed it in. It is only in slow motion that you can see the Italian managed it with a bicycle-kick in mid-air.

Thierry Henry – ARSENAL v Manchester United (2000-01) Denis Irwin thought he had done everything right as he got tight behind Henry as the Frenchman received possession with his back to goal on the edge of the area. It took Henry one touch to flick the ball up, perform a quick swivel and fire an amazing shot over Fabien Barthez to make Irwin look silly.

Dennis Bergkamp – Newcastle v ARSENAL (2001-02) Bergkamp’s effort lives long in the memory. Taking a pass from Robert Pires with his back to goal and surrounded by Newcastle defenders, the Dutchman flicked the ball past Nicos Dabizas with his left foot and turned around the defender before slotting it past Shay Given.

Alan Shearer – NEWCASTLE v Everton (2002-03) Very similar to the one Rooney was to score a couple of years later. The Premier League’s most prolific goalscorer bagged a beauty as Shola Ameobi supplied the nod-down and Shearer let fly.

Wayne Rooney – MANCHESTER UNITED v Newcastle (2004-05) Rooney was wound up and about to be substituted when the ball was headed directly into his path. Almost in fury, the youngster lashed out as it dropped, beating Shay Given with a shot of stunning power.
