Week ahead: Strong gales - Lots of dry weather, Dec 25 - 08:37

Generally mild High pressure is expected to build in from the south. This is expected to keep much of Britain generally dry with temperatures above normal. By mid week another deeper low affects the country as it turns a bit cooler before becoming mild again later. Most of the rain for the upcoming week will be light and confined to the north of the country. For the weather for the next few days click here Wednesday 28/12/11 A windy and colder day in the north with showers around the coasts of Britain and into western areas these turn wintry in the north west. Rain across south eastern areas of England clears to sunny spells by the afternoon. Severe gales are likely across Scotland with gusts up to 90mph possible. Some rain affect Scotland tonight. Highs of 6 to 8C.

Thursday 29/12/11 For England, Wales, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland is looking fair, mild and bright with sunny intervals and some cloud at times while rain is likely across northern Scotland. Gales move back into northern Scotland tonight as the rain turns heavy. A slight risk of a frost in the south. Cool today with highs of 6 to 8C.

Friday 30/12/11 Expect a good deal of dry weather across the country but some patchy rain and drizzle will affect northern England in the morning and Scotland throughout the day. Gales again are forecast for northern Scotland. Best of any bright spells will be in the south and east of England. Expect highs of 8 to 9C.

New Year's Eve 31/12/11 A front will bring rain in across the north west of Scotland with strong winds persisting but overall it looks to stay settled and dry with a good deal of cloud. A milder day to come with highs of 7 to 10C.

New Year's Day 01/01/12 A weak front may spread some rain in across the country but perhaps staying dry in the far south. Not as mild today. Dry tonight with some fog and frost possible. Expect highs of 3 to 8C. Monday 02/01/12 Mainly a dry, cold day across Britain with good spells of sunshine. Later rain is expected to spread in across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Expect highs of 4 to 7C.
