When we think of the Israeli climate, warm weather almost always comes to mind. But next year will see a celebration in Jerusalem that marks the exact opposite.
The city will be the site of an international ice festival in March and April. Among the attractions on offer will be ice versions of the Kotel, the Shrine of the Book and David's Citadel, with visitors entering the exhibition site through a frozen homage to the Jaffa Gate.
Construction is set to begin in the new year on an ice bar, an ice concert hall and even an ice rink for Israelis to test their skating skills.
The festival will be located at the city's old train station compound.
Nir Barkat, mayor of Jerusalem, said the festival joined an impressive roster of events that have already taken p la ce in the city, including the Opera Festival, the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Festival of Light.
"The cultural revolution in Jerusalem will break new records this year," he said.
The exhibition will be run at a temperature of 10 degrees below zero - but there is still hope that it could bring about a thaw in Arab-Israeli relations.
