TRIBUTES have been paid to the Swansea pensioner whose body was recovered from the River Tawe.
The 71-year-old man is from the Manselton area of the city, but he has not yet been named by police.
His body was recovered from the stretch of the river which runs alongside Beaufort Road in Plasmarl on Thursday morning — less than an hour after his family first reported him missing.
Ward councillor for Cwmbwrla and AM for South Wales West, Peter Black, said: "It is always a shock when someone dies, and my condolences go out to the man's friends and family.
"It is clear there have been a number of deaths around the Tawe and I am concerned about that.
"But there has been investment by the council to install railings in places along the Tawe, and you just cannot legislate for every incident."
Jonathan Davies, the vicar of St Michael's Church in Manselton, said the thoughts and prayers of his congregation would be with the man's family at such a difficult time.
"When someone dies in such circumstances our thoughts will be with them and their family during Sunday worship," he said.
"As vicar of the parish, I would also very much offer my condolences to the family of the man."
Those sentiments were echoed by leader of the council and ward member for Cwmbwrla, Chris Holley.
"I would like to pass on my condolences to the family and everyone involved. It really is very sad," he said.
Emergency services were called to the stretch of water, which is popular with dog walkers, just after 8.30am following reports a body had been spotted in the water.
The fire service's rescue team recovered the man's body at a spot opposite a number of businesses, including FRF Accident Repair Centre and Swansea's bowls stadium.
The pensioner was reported missing by members of his family at 7.45am.
