LaPorta homers again as Clippers rout Syracuse: Minor League Report

Chun Chen and Kyle Bellows each have four hits in Akron's romp, Anthony Gallas and Jeremy Tice have three hits each in Carolina win, Lake County holds off South Bend, Lake Erie loses home opener.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 12, Chiefs 2: The Columbus offense flexed its muscles by collecting 13 hits against Syracuse in an International League game in Columbus.

Jason Donald (.400) led the fireworks with three hits, while Jared Goedert (.667) and Luke Carlin (.268) had two apiece. Matt LaPorta launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

Starter Kevin Slowey (3-3, 5.14) pitched seven innings, giving up a run on three hits and striking out seven for the win.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 16, Flying Squirrels 3: Sixteen hits, 16 runs and a score that looks more like a football game than nine innings of baseball. That's what the Aeros accomplished against Richmond in an Eastern League game in Akron.

A five-run fourth and a seven-run eighth added up to a rout of the Squirrels.

Chun-Hsiu Chen (.311) and Kyle Bellows (.231) led the hit parade with four each. Bellows collected four RBI with a grand slam to center in the eighth.

Starter T.J. House (2-1) went six innings for the win. He gave up one run on two hits, struck out five and walked four.

Notes: With outfielder Jared Goedert promoted to Columbus, outfielder Ben Copeland was sent to Akron from the Clippers.

Advanced A Carolina Mudcats

Mudcats 12, Nationals 5: Carolina batters had a field day in Woodbridge, Va., racking up 18 hits in a rout of Potomac in Carolina League play. Two Mudcats had three each: Anthony Gallas (.280) and Jeremy Tice (.313).

Reliever Jordan Cooper (1-2, 4.42) cruised to his first victory, thanks to the stellar run support. He pitched four innings, gave up no runs on one hit and struck out five.

A Lake County Captains

Captains 4, Silver Hawks 2: The Captains took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning and held on to beat South Bend on the road in Midwest League action.

With the bases loaded, Todd Hankins (.222) unleashed a triple for the bulk of the scoring.

Starter Elvis Araujo (1-4) went six innings to earn his first victory. He gave up one run on five hits, striking out six and walking one.

Independent A Lake Erie

Boomers 4, Crushers 0: Lake Erie managed just four hits in dropping the Frontier League home opener to Schaumberg (Ill.).
